Ā They simply cannot rely on McD to figure it out. Ā Four losses is enough. Ā They have to do something a bit drastic. Tony Dungy has a 9-10 playoff record and he had Peyton Manning for a lot of that. Andy Reid's playoff record before winning his first Super Bowl was 12-14. Bill Cowher is 12-9. Marty Schottenheimer was 5-13. John Harbaugh is 13-11.Ā Ā Getting to and winning the Super Bowl is hard. You not only have to have a great coach that knows what he is doing, you also have to have some luck on your side. It's not a walk in the park Ā But again, the coaches on that list weren't consistently losing games that their elite QB's played very well in. But the winner of this award was always likely to be a guy still playing, in other words a guy who has not yet used up all his chances to get to a Super Bowl. Also worth pointing out that as well as Josh played in those games, Mahomes outplayed him in most of them. Ā Greeny points out that Allen only has one INT against KC in the playoff losses. Mahomes has zero in the same games. Ā In any case, Peyton made the SB his first time in his 9th year. Ā Fouts never played in the SB. Ā Tarkenton didn't make the Super Bowl, or I believe the playoffs, till like his 12th or 13th year. Ā Allen's got plenty of time and is on a team that has given him chances nearly every year. He'll make it more than once, says I, and win a minimum of one, probably more. Ā Ā Ā You're right, they don't have a competent coach. Ā McDermott is far far better than that. Ā But yeah, overreacting and dumb hot takes are fun, so go do your thing. Ā What is McDermott far, far better than competent at? He's a defensive coach whose defense has been HISTORICALLY bad in the postseason and has been the primary culprit for us getting bounced every single postseason. His game management also cost us huge in the 13 seconds game. What exactly is he so competent at? 2 Quote

mjt328 Posted August 14 Posted August 14 (edited) Sean McDermott is a disciple of Andy Reid. Ā Oddly enough, Andy Reid was the NFL's poster-child for 20 years for "almost" getting there and never being able to get over the hump.Ā He started coaching the Eagles in 2001 and then moved to the Chiefs in 2013.Ā In that 20 year period (before he finally won the Super Bowl), Reid's teams had 14 playoff appearances, 9 division titles, 6 championship game appearances and one loss in the big game.Ā And no trophy to show for it.Ā Wow. Ā So what was the big change that happened in 2019?Ā The answer you will get from 99% of football fans will probably be Patrick Mahomes, and they aren't necessarily wrong.Ā But it should also be pointed out that Steve Spagnuolo was hired in 2019 as the team's Defensive Coordinator.Ā Yes, the same guy who created the defense that stopped the undefeated Patriots way back on 2007 has also helped the Chiefs win all three of their Super Bowls.Ā Hard to find it just a coincidence. Ā Personally, I don't think Spagnuolo is a significantly better defensive coach than McDermott.Ā The numbers from year to year certainly don't support that.Ā But I do think Spag's strategy (particularly when it comes to pressuring QBs) just seems to work better in the postseason against the NFL's best passers.Ā While Spagnuolo is more about creating chaos with blitzes, McDermott's strategy has always been to rely more on confusing coverage packages, and then pressure with four guys.Ā And it just hasn't worked.Ā Ā Ā Last year, the Bills defense started a gradual shift into being more versatile.Ā More man coverage.Ā Occasionally breaking out of the Nickel.Ā The next step will be to bring more blitzes, and create more chaos along the front with stunts and shifts.Ā There have been some reports out of training camp that we are doing exactly that.Ā I hope it translates into the postseason.Ā As many of us have been stating for 2-3 years, this team won't take the next step until we can significantly increase our pressure on the QB in the playoffs. Ā Were Tom Brady, Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw significantly better quarterbacks than Peyton Manning and Dan Marino?Ā They performed much better in the postseason, but I personally I would say they weren't. Ā Also, it isn't like Spags defense hasn't been regularly smoked by Josh Allen too.Ā The difference is that he seems to create just enough pressure to force that extra missed throw (like when Chris Jones barely knocked Allen's throw off in the 2023 divisional game, on what would have been a touchdown pass).Ā Ā Quote
