Some of these e-bike riders are getting to be a pain in the ass the way the drive them

I am not sure if that link was behind a paywall... But I was able to read.  Cops in Minny are cracking down... They were going 45mph... Through stop signs etc...  Sheesh!

I see kids riding these things on the road all the time with no regard for traffic laws. They’re a problem. It’s a little different but a couple months back I was at the gas station and some kids had taken their quad over there to grab some food. A cop happened to pull in for some gas of his own and then hilarity ensued. I wish I could have stuck around to see when the parents showed up.

One of those eBike dudes with no regard for traffic law just got creamed here in the Buffalo area, but he wasn't a kid--he was 40.

I see the same crap by adults down here in Chemung County. Kids are mostly riding regular old time bikes

I was going to guess on its third birthday, but apparently that is not correct.

No.  That's when grass carp starts eating solely vegetation.

You're getting your Asian carp mixed up w/e-bikes.

I’m not embarrassed, I’m sure that happens all the time.

Where does the Spandex Mafia stand on this?

New ebikes, including mountain bikes, are quite expensive but can also be chipped & modded to go over 40mph as allowed motor engaged. This isn't all that fast for bikes considering road bikes can and regularly hit 40mph on flat land.

Posted (edited)

We have 2 ebikes, a family bike that can carry the kid and some cargo and a single rider, small capacity bike (usually for me).

The family bike is just "pedal assist" and gets you up to 20mph pretty quickly, but that's where the assist tops out so you'd have to be going downhill to go faster. The single is a Class II and has a throttle and goes up to 28mph.

They are definitely way more bike than motorcycle.

I get the craze because these things are great for the family to get around the city, and helps us 40-somethings relive our youthful days of the 90s.

But what gets me is the amount of families I see riding these things with NO HELMETS.

I'm a cusp GenXer and grew up before the helmet craze so never wore one growing up, and wasnt a huge fan of the idea going into it. But now, with so much to lose, and how dangerous it can be out on the streets with drivers... It blows my mind that people arent wearing them. I saw a family go by the other day, mom and 2 kids on back, zero helmets...

I dont see people getting too crazy on them since we have pretty decent bike infrastructure in the city (Atlanta). Bike lanes almost everywhere we want to go, etc.

But folks, WEAR A HELMET.

As for kids riding the ebikes or electric scooters, no one under 16 should be operating these things on their own. It's more dangerous than being in a car.

100% with you on the helmet. If going outside the neighborhood I may wear a helmet. But on the trails with my hardtail I always wear my helmet.

I'd have never considered it 20 years ago but have taken some major spills and gone over the handbars a lot more than I used to despite being a better driver.

I haven’t noticed that many people riding without helmets, but I get that you’d see that more where you live. Or, maybe I just don’t notice details like that because we all just bounced around in the back end of the station wagon. It’s hard to say for sure.  🤷‍♂️
