Correct - he was not one of the worst, he was THE worst.

So what about lane Johnson his early career?

Way higher draft pick.. struggled pass blocking

Didn't have good grades as a rookie... gave up lots of sacks

It's not like Lane Johnson was an 85 grade rookie.. he barely had a better grade than Spencer Brown his rookie year and is coming off a back injury

And pff is still subjective.. they don't know blocking assignments and they're not foolproof

I'd still rather use my eyes and my eyes shows Spencer Brown has been drastically improving for a while

I do really like keons potential and his athletic traits

I think he's with a good staff and QB who can bring him along and I think he will be a solid receiver and if he can get 7-8 TDs that would be huge

It's bot unusual for a RT to improve.

It IS unusual for a RT to go from the worst in the league to one of the best int he league.

Spencer Brown didn't just improve - he did a complete 180.

I don't think he was ever the worst.    RAS isn't the be-all end-all but being #1 over a 25 year period implied the upside was high.

Back off the caffeine, this is really going overboard

NEVER!!! (I’m 45 with a toddler. If I back off the caffeine, I die.)

But point taken. I was a bit harsh on the kid. Let’s see what he can do this year. Solid WR2 is a big piece of the puzzle we need. So let’s hope he hits that in a 17 game season 👍

There are always going to be some zealots on here who make ridiculously broad claims like @Ed_Formerly_of_Roch did about everyone wanting to run Brown out of town.

I saw another guy who posts about 10x per day here recently claim that everyone "had it in" for Kincaid when he was drafted.

These are NOT true statements.    They are nonsensical hyperbole or, in most cases, just outright lies by people who can't handle criticism.

As for @Einstein claim about it being very rare for a RT to make huge improvement............I totally disagree with that.    Most RT's don't have LT feet.   They gotta' learn to work with what they have.   Lot's of them struggle early and become much better.

There are a number of people who "do this" or have done this for a living that don't believe in Coleman.   Some of them are literally why he was on the board at #33.   It's not just the "posters here".    Their professional opinions don't mean that much either.   Half of first round picks fail to even warrant a 5th year extension.   So the pro's aren't exactly nailing it.    Your scope is very limited if you don't realize these facts.   And perhaps that's why you are so outraged.   Just because you don't think you can be as informed as a professional doesn't mean you shouldn't learn how the systems work, at the very least.

Yes I was exaggerating when I stated everyone wants him gone.  But there were certainly a number of threads about him and seemed as soon as one thread would fall off the first page or so, a new one would start up.  The point is still valid in that a large number of posters think their evaluation of a player after one or two years is gospel and they are smarter about these things than the people who do this for a living.

This isn't about criticism, this is about people who here all think they are the smartest guy in the room when in reality we're all pretty stupid about these things, but some will go to great lengths to prove they are right.

And yes I totally agree with you about half of first round picks don't get a 2nd contract so if you claim every player sucks, you'd be right much more than being wrong.  So it's easy to look smart and say this play won't succeed.  Does that mean the front office folks are dumber than the posters here.  And if they don't know, then how can anyone here know more?

Reading your responses here and how much you seem to be taking issue with this, I can't help but think of that quote from very long ago :

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks"

Probably. He'd look better if we moved him around but we won't because we need an x and have lots of guys who should be featured in the slot. Keon needs to become a master of his craft to reach full potential which might take years. Until then, he's just a guy who struggles to gain separation from the other guy.

Yep you ridiculously exaggerated the amount of criticism Brown had received in an attempt to shout down this Coleman discussion.

Even in the Spencer Brown criticism thread that I quoted there weren't that many people other than the OP that were particularly critical of Spencer Brown.

But sure enough,  as I suspected........you were there in that thread to offer your contrary opinion.

You read the title of one thread......applied unnecessary gravity to it.......disagreed........and ran with it.

Better than DK? With a higher percentage of contested balls

I'm pretty sure players are allowed to improve

Coleman having a high percentage of contested passes basically means that he’s not open as much on his targets, FWIW.

I think some have him too high and some too low... my expectations are hoping that he can round into a solid WR2 with 50/50 ball potential...  not sure if others deem that too high or too low... I certainly havent given up... but I think these next two years will show if he can put together back to back seasons of growth... if he can the I think he can get there... if not i am probably too optimistic... those that are looking for him to be Nakua or JJ etc... probably hoping for too much... but 1st year players...  lets tap the breaks and see...

You could spin that anyway you want

You could also spin it that he has a lot of room to grow because he does.. and when he gets route running nuance down his separation will go up

Like there's very few players in the NFL who do not improve from year one to three with a good coaching staff.. I expect steady improvement

“A lot of room to grow” is code for “not very good right now but may be in the future”

Every young player has a lot of room to grow. You don’t need a chart to spin that. You can spin that for everyone.

He averaged 20 yards of catch last year and basically almost had the same amount of regular season stats as Xavier Worthy

He wasn't trash even though he wasn't great

He was absolutely trash lol.

At least after October.

McDermott and Beane all but said he was trash in their press conferences too.

After his injury he was not that productive

Before his injury he wasn't lighting the world on fire but he was making some plays

There's no world where 19 yards of catch is trash lol if he had nine yards a catch sure that's trash

Brandon bean and McDermott are trying to light a fire under the ass of the first person they took in the last draft

He averaged 19 yards a catch that's 100,000% something to build on

Sean McDermott never called elam trash even though he was much worse than Coleman ever was.. because Elam probably couldn't take it and he knows Coleman can there

Coaches push players in different ways.. some players need to be coddled some need a fire lit under their ass... McDermott clearly thinks he knows what kind of guy Coleman is and that he needs the fire
