My comp on Coleman was Q. Johnston of the Chargers.

Same type thing.

Johnston struggled his first two years before starting pretty well this year.

Invisible again lately, but some production in year 3.

I know Johnson has been hurt this year... He started off well this year... He's got 407 yards and 5 TD's in 5 games played...

IMHO Johnson was a much better prospect coming out than Coleman. The thing about Johnson was there was all this early hype about him being a top 5 pick that it seemed like a big pile-on when folks realized he was not exactly that kind of prospect. But he was a massive playmaker in College...of course being a Michigan fan I have a certain perspective... I did not view Coleman anywhere close to Johnson coming out, and I still don't... Johnson is not a blazing guy, but he's faster and has a way better feel for the game IMHO... Not to say that Coleman can't get better... But I've just never got the general feeling like he's at Quintin's level...

No lie... I've told this story before on this board...

So... we all wanted Ngata... I was literally in my office Chanting Ngata! Ngata! Ngata!...

The pick comes in...

Whitner...

I'm in shock for a second... Then I'm pissed... So I decide to kick the 25 lb. dumbbell on the floor...

But I forget I'm bare footed...

I split my toe wide open and immediately there's blood everywhere... It looks like an ER scene...lol

So that's my Whitner/Ngata memory for life... B-)

I too can share an Ngata story. His draft year I was attending a conference in Portland Oregon and the guy sitting next to me was a Dr. from Eugene and, it turned out, a big college football fan. I knew everyone was mocking Ngata to us and I had noticed some downside comments in the scouting reports so I asked him about it. He told me not to worry, that they were failing to consider the number of double and triple teams he got, and that Ngata was a can't miss perennial pro bowler.
I left the luncheon totally relieved and confident that we were about to do the right thing.

There were other players available at our picks in the past that I didn't understand that weren't taken, the move back last year too to me didn't make much sense because there were players there that would have IMHO made more of a impact on the team for years to come than getting Coleman .

The LB that the Lions got Jack Campbell @ 6' 5" all & 245 lbs I think would d have been a great get the year he was drafted & if I'm not mistaken he was there at the Bills pick and with Millano being hurt he would have been there, McConkey was another that I didn't get but could understand I think more so because they had Shakir .

Like you I'm definitely no football expert but what goes into some of the picks sometimes I just don't know . Now I'm hoping that Coleman might be used in a slot position if for nothing else just to change up the looks of the offense because from what i'v heard that is where he was very productive in college and has the body to box out defenders .

We will see soon what if anything will change this coming week . I think the players we have are very capable to make some hay but they have to be utilized correctly with in the scheme to do so let's hope Brady has an epiphany during the by !!

Ngata himself has said in an interview that he thought he was going to Buffalo.

If only Coleman didn’t run the fastest (?) gauntlet at the combine, Bills may not have picked him.

I was kind of hoping that we'd trade up for Brian Thomas in that draft, but McConkey wasn't really on the radar as a 1st rounder.

Still, everything is easy in hindsight. The draft really is a crapshoot, even when you pick in the top 10.

Actually the Lions took Campbell 19th overall, so he went well before our original 27th slot or 25th slot we moved up to jump the Cowboys for Kincaid.

Campbell was off the board when the Bills picked. He was bad his first year, meh his second year, but is playing lights out this season.

and in hindsight we could also say we dodged a bullet to not take Ja'Lynn Polk taken 37th overall by the Patriots who has a grand total of 12 NFL catches.

The funny thing is that I know for a fact Ladd wasn't on a lot of peoples radar here because I got so much push back when I said Ladd was the WR5 in the draft behind MHJ, Nabers, Odunze, and BTJ.  I kept saying he will be one of the best WR's to come out of this draft, him and Ricky Pearsall too.  Most people argued he was just going to be a slot WR in the NFL.  All I heard was how Adonai, Legette, or Franklin (the most common 3) were the WR5, some even having Adonai or Legette above BTJ even.

Where I did agree is that Ladd (and Ricky) would work more in the slot in the NFL.  And as much as I loved Ladd, there was never a point where I felt like he was a realistic option for a team to draft another WR who is projected to play more out of the slot than the outside.

But now there is all this outrage we didn't take him from a lot of people who weren't hyping him up before or during the draft.  The hindsight is 20/20 and revisionist game is a waste of time.  Funny thing about those, people always forget they were wrong back then too and pounding the table for guys who have worse stats than even Keon has for their careers so far.

Reality is, that if the Bills could go back and do the draft again, they probably skip WR with that first pick and take Cooper or some other position because drafting another slot WR doesn't do a lot for this team and there have been no other outside WR's to emerge from that draft at any point where we were on the clock.

I didn’t want Coleman, Mitchell was my guy. I was able to tolerate his occasional absence of effort/not playing at full speed when not targeted etc.. but when news broke of his occasional behavioural issues what with not taking his meds etc…I realized that it was unlikely we would draft him.

I say I didn’t want Coleman but I wasn’t against it like others were. I thought then and continue to think that he could develop into a productive player, maybe even a very productive player, but I dont think the Bills have done him and his development any favours. They may be putting his career in jeopardy. Clearly for a young guy not named Randy Moss lining him up almost exclusively outside, and more even than real X receivers do in today’s game by the way (including BTJ) the ask was probably too much (as well as downright dumb).

The Bills O needs a genuine X receiver. If they had that, as well as maybe a little imagination scheme wise/gameplanning/playcalling, a guy like Coleman would have a much better chance of developing properly.

It’s probably unfair and inaccurate to say so but i’ve always gotten a strong Jauron whiff from McD. Anyway whats apparent is that these guys just dont know wide receivers. Just look around the league.
