It’s the same exact location. Orchard Park to the Airport.

The conversation is about the Bills breaking the travel ban. They did it twice recently. Once was celebrated and this time criticized.

I don’t see reports of police assistance this time. All we know is the team broke the travel ban.

OK, we largely agree although, the location is not entirely the same - the airport in question was Rochester, and most of the drive was through counties where the travel bans had been lifted.  But yes, the team broke the travel ban to drive into Erie County to the stadium, agree.  And then players drove home, again breaking travel ban, agree.

Blaming the government for something like this is ridiculous... you people always want government out of things until a disaster happens and then you blame the government when they try to help people and ignore all of the help. If you don't have exact specifics then why do you even have an opinion like this?!?! Spinning people up based on garbage is obviously what you are doing...

What is you people?

The Bills left Thursday night. They returned Sunday.

There was no blizzard either before or after they returned. Can we at least get the facts straight if we need to find something to be outraged about?

Where did I misstate that?

They shouldn't have been allowed to return to Buffalo

This isn't really true. Emergency services did rescue a number of people that were stranded. They did deliver life saving medicine and food to some households. They just couldn't possibly help everyone and they had to set realistic expectations with the community.

The travel ban was put in place because if it wasn't there would have been mass chaos. As it is even with the travel ban enough idiots decided to go out on their own, got their cars stuck and clogged up the roads for emergency services and plows. Imagine if no ban had been placed to begin with. And yeah the Bills players got special treatment because they are special people. I don't care about optics. That's the reality of it. Exactly zero people didn't get help they needed because the Bills got an escort home. I for one choose to be happy that these players are home with their families after everything they do for the community and local economy. Others choose to be upset because that's the social media world we live in.

All over social media I see people criticizing the local government's response to the blizzard. The truth that no one wants to accept is that there is no perfect response to something like this, even if they had unlimited resources which they don't. It was the same after Hurricane Katrina. I'm sure in both cases mistakes were made but you're talking about a generational weather event. Everyone thinks they could do so much better. Buffalo Niagara is a metro population of 1.1 million people. That is an incomprehensible number of people to manage. Personally I think everyone is doing the best they can.

There is no perfect response. I'm not criticizing their response. I'm criticisimg them letting the bills do this.

For the record I never said anything to let you make such a dumb statement. I loathe government. Staying away or helping - they're awful.

A rare mis-step by the Erie County government.

A lot of people ignore travel bans. People probably thought it’s just another snow storm. Didn’t help that Christmas shopping was still going.

That's where I think the "generational storm" bit plays into it - not just in government planning and readiness, but in how people react to the weather reports and behave.

There are published stories now memorializing two of the people who died on the street, and both walked out into the storm for food on Saturday.  Weather reports are saying, this is very dangerous weather, zero visibility, whiteouts, 60 mph winds whipping snow into your face, and they're like "I'll go get milk".

People in North Dakota and Minnesota which see blizzards more regularly understand that a weather report like that is Mother Nature saying "You....You....and You....Stay the ***** Inside".  And that wearing your car as a winter coat, only works while the engine is running and the fuel holds out.

IOW, I think you're right that people are "just another snow storm" and "I'll stop at Target on my way home for 3 last Christmas gifts and some extra eggnog for Christmas dinner"

No. It's a truth. They stopped answering calls during the storm. I hate using the term they for government fwiw.

Prove it.  Because there is nothing saying they (meaning 911) "stopped answering calls during the storm" anywhere I can find.

They stopped RESPONDING to calls, because they (meaning the first responders) physically couldn't.

No they didn't. The lines were busy bc thousands of dumb asses were flooding the lines asking stupid questions and people who desperately needed immediate help couldn't get through. Not at all the same thing as "they stopped answering calls."

Might be paywalled, if you can read it, this NYT article is pretty positive about Buffalo during the blizzard.  Makes Buffalo sound like "the City of Good Neighbors" indeed.  https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/25/nyregion/buffalo-winter-storm.html
