Mahomes Ten Year Deal with Chiefs

The deal was done 9 days before the deadline for players to sign their franchise tenders.  Chris Jones, the Chiefs’ best defensive player, has not signed his offer yet.  No long term offer could be made to him until a deal was reached with Pat, so the timing of this deal makes perfect sense.

Billl, I'm not familiar with the behind the scenes rules of capology. How would Jones' deal be dependent on Mahomes', given Mahomes was under contract for 2 more years?

Knowing Mahomes cap hits are certain now, allows KC to know what they can do with the Cap for Jones.  The extension they signed with Mahomes COULD have voided out years remaining (they didn't in this case) etc etc...

IF KC gets a deal with Jones done, it's going to be heavily backloaded with small base salaries this year and next....after that thye won't have to squeeze so hard.

If they’re trying to sign Jones to a LTC, it’s going to go well beyond those 2 years.  It’s a 4-5 year consideration.  That’s why KC used the tag on him.  They’re not unsure of their cap in 2020 or 2021, so they know they can fit him those two years.  What they didn’t know is if Pat was going to demand a short term contract that would be a bigger hit immediately after that or if he was going to sign a ten year deal that would give them room for Jones long term.

The contract allows them to make a competitive offer to Jones.  If he really wants top of the market, KC probably can’t afford it.  As a Chiefs fan, I hope they make it work.  If I was his friend, I’d tell him to get every dollar he can.

That's an incredible assumption right now. If this was last off season, I could see the Chiefs doing this deal. But now??? With the world in turmoil??

It's far more likely that the cap decreases, possibly multiple times, in the next few years, given the hit the owners are going to be taking at the gate + concession stands.

At the very least, the Chiefs could've waited to see what the next few months will bring.

If you are correct and there are no public gatherings for . . . years. Can you really imagine a situation where our gov/fed allows deflation.  If this were to play out KC would get an even better deal.

Buyouts

There was also talk of “guarantee mechanisms” that force the team to make annual decisions to keep Mahomes while guaranteeing more of the money in the later years of his deal. Albert Breer of SI.com has a breakdown of the numbers involved in those decisions.

On the third day of the 2021 league year, $40.45 million becomes guaranteed unless the Chiefs cut Mahomes with a $52.25 million buyout. That buyout goes up to $70, $78.4 and $76.85 million over the next three years with just over $80 million becoming guaranteed if he remains on board.

In 2025, Mahomes stands to have another $38.9 million guaranteed against a $41.95 million buyout. A $49.4 million roster bonus for 2027 is guaranteed on the third day of the 2026 league year and another $55 million would become guaranteed if he’s on the roster on the third day of the 2027 league year.

And There it is.  Chiefs re-sign Jones to a 4 year deal.  The salary cap is more of a suggestion than an actual barrier. Think of it like that border wall Trump loves so much.  There’s plenty of ways to get around it.

Supposedly he left money on table.  He could have demanded three-quarters of a billion rather than half a billion.

A big reason the Chiefs pulled this off was the willingness of Mahomes and Jones to bend a little on the structure of their deals. Mahomes, in particular, had all the leverage to push for whatever he wanted, be it a fully guaranteed contract or a percentage of the deal tied to the cap.

Sure, he signed a baseball-style deal that will essentially guarantee him the total GDP of a small country over the next decade, but the deal also added very little new money to the Chiefs’ cap over the next two seasons and, more important, it allows the Chiefs to plan for future salary caps with locked-in figures for him, a major win.

And because Mahomes conceded on those two points, it gave the Chiefs a chance to bring back Jones, a franchise-tagged pass rusher who was so weary of going-nowhere contract talks that he threatened to sit out the season. That all changed, he says, when Mahomes’ lucrative but team-friendly extension got done.
