Seattle moves to slash police budget by $20M to offset coronavirus losses as officials vow to dismantle CHOP

The mayor’s budget proposal will be introduced as the city of Seattle faces “economic devastation and job losses that have led to record unemployment, an unprecedented loss of $300 million in revenue, and community needs including food access and housing assistance.” The plan also vowed to “develop a new vision of the East Precinct area in partnership with community leaders.”

Seattle votes to defund police...and by defund the police, they mean begin to eliminate the entire Seattle Police Derpartment.

Not good news for leftists who insist the definition of 'defund the police' is misunderstood.

Good luck, Seattle. This should go swell with your plan to shut down and empty your downtown prison.

You do realize the covid recession is costing States and cities a massive loss of revenue  and big budget cuts are coming.

Maybe I missed something- how does loss of revenue to a city require riots to fix the problem?

Maybe they shouldn't be closing down businesses while allowing rioters to cause havoc? Maybe those mayors shouldn't be issuing stand down orders to the police to not stop the rioters?

Riots should not be tolerated for any reason . The loss of revenue due to covid  is a real problem.

Then how would they blame Trump for their problems?

So whose job is it to fix the problem? Should we bail out all of the poorly run cities so they can continue being poorly run? Or should the bailout come with federal oversight and conditions they don't like? Or should they be left alone to fix their own problems?

I would be ok with that,  it worked for Buffalo once before

"The control board was created in 2003 in response to a fiscal crisis. Facing a huge budget shortfall, exacerbated by an expensive new labor contract with city police and other looming budget strains, then Mayor Anthony Masiello begged the state for a bailout."

USA TODAY COLUMN:

Back to the future in policing? Civilian militias in American cities: Police being pulled back in blue urban areas has led to neighborhood patrols which lead to chaos, violence, gangs and prejudice.

Special bonus: It opens with a Steely Dan quote. Because of course.

Plus: “Anyone with a brain and a bit of historical knowledge could have seen this coming, which is no doubt why it eluded so much of our political class.”
