Drew Brees: Controversial comments

Explain the pig socks bro.

Socks are a garment typically worn on the foot but can be worn on the hands if you're into puppetry (this is not recommended).  Sometimes socks have decorations on them or patterns.  Some adults think wearing silly socks or socks with pictures on them like pigs, or cops, or cop pigs, are a substitute for actually having a personality.  These people are wrong.

Have you considered the option that everyone understands your oversimplifications and still disagrees?

I hadn't considered basic understanding of cause and effect to be so difficult, no.

Kaepernick spoke at great length what he was protesting.  To disregard his words because of an idiom like "actions speak louder than words" while disregarding all of his other actions is about as compelling as citing "breakfast is the most important meal of day" for why Kaep meant to disrespect the flag.

I just punched my neighbor in the face cause he didn't return my weedeater. I would never commit assault, i was just demonstrating my feelings with regards to the weedeater situation. It just happens that my actions, what I did to demonstrate, were shockingly similar to assault. But that's completely irrelevant because I would never commit assault and I was just demonstrating.

My point being this: Kneeling during the anthem was inherently disrespectful. He meant it that way. He was declaring that he could not, in good faith, stand in respect of the flag and the anthem. So he knelt to show his disapproval and disrespect. It doesn't matter what he says afterwards, and I don't believe he was "trampling on the graves of soldiers" as some would say, but to come back and say that Brees is off base for calling it disrespectful, when that's the very thing it was meant to be, is idiotic.

How, exactly? You clearly stated that you know that Kaepernick’s intention was to disrespect the flag. I pointed out that he and others have explained that wasn’t their intention and that we just can’t accept that. Simple enough. What greater point did you make that I missed?

Actually, never mind. I get it and it’s been hashed over ad nauseam.

All due respect, but you're missing my point:

So wait, when the anthem plays, lots of folks in the stands stay seated, go take a whizz, go get a drink, drink their drink, chat with their friends, keep their hats on

Are they all disrespecting the flag?  Should we drum them all out of the rolls of Loyal Americans?

I understand your personal belief about what Kaepernick did, but I think you omit some legit choices from your list (for example, the act of kneeling or taking a knee is traditionally an act of respect) as well as making use of some simplifying assumptions.

Poor fashion sense?

The socks are merely an extension of his protest. Pretty simple. Now I understand that we want to paint those socks as insulting the proverbial 99.9% of the great policemen and women who serve and protect their communities on a daily basis and I get why. And that’s not necessarily unfair given the lack of context.

But he was referring to corrupt cops and if we’re being intellectually honest, we can admit that.

And when I see a cop like Chauvin and three other cops murdering someone in cold blood, I think those socks are an insult to pigs more than anything else.

It will always come back to this for me. There is so so so so so much real disrespect during the anthem at football games (Thousands of blackout drunk fans) but the only "disrespect" condemned is kneeling during the anthem with attention to the flag.

Also so many of the people who get pissed about kneeling during the anthem where flag themed clothes...which you're also not supposed to do.

I think they are passively disrespecting it, or choosing not to partake in the ceremony. I don't think there's some unwritten law saying they have to be a part of the anthem or do xy and z to demonstrate their respect. I don't really care what they do. The difference between the two is that Kaepernick actively chose to do the opposite of what is tradition to show respect to the flag. Again, I'm fine with that choice and his personal convictions that led him to it (even If I disagree), but why is it offensive to call it what it is?

The socially accepted way of paying respect in that moment is to stand with hand above heart. By doing the very singular opposite, isn't that quite clearly a sign of disrespect? Again, I'm not arguing he should be put in jail or that he's desecrating Arlington.

You say you understand my beliefs but I'm not sure you do. I never cared that he knelt. I find most everything about him and a lot of his opinions wrong and abhorrent, but I respect his freedom to kneel in protest and disrespect the flag if he can't in good conscience stand in respect of it. (although once the employer is involved it's another conversation)

And my point is that other people may legitimately disagree on the "inherently disrespectful" characterization.

My question, if Kaep does indeed respect the flag, why was he unable to stand during the anthem which is done as an expression of respect?

To be fair that’s not quite true, one of his teammates literally said Brees should just keep his mouth shut.

You don’t see the difference between being told you should shut up and calling to force someone to shut up?  There’s a big difference.

It's the flag themed plates and shoes that get me, personally.  Because nothing says "I respect the flag" like squirting ketsup and mustard all over it.

Or walking through dog poo.  Just my personal pet peeve.

My question is, why can’t you take Kaepernick’s and others’ explanation for why they took a knee?

?

The bolded is a false analogy. No merit.

Which is it? Is kneeling inherently disrespectful or WAS kneeling disrespectful because of his intent according to you?  Apparently all of his other ACTIONS do not matter either, like standing for God Bless America or his activism directly related to his stated cause.  You disregard those ACTIONS and insist his intent was simply to disrespect the flag.

He said he did not feel proud of the country given his views of widespread injustice and inequality.  I find it troubling that so many see failure to comply with our out of place displays of nationalism at all times as an affront to all things American.
