But really, by the time you get to the 60s, virtually any presidential candidate is going to have a service record, and about half a combat record. (Carter and Nixon never saw combat - Carter graduated Annapolis in 1946, Nixon worked in South Pacific Air Transport Command - an important post, but a decidedly non-combat one. Reagan, of course, was ineligible for overseas duty because of bad eyesight.) Highest decoration awarded to any of them was Ike's Distinguished Service Medal. Next-highest...was LBJ's Silver Star for being a passenger on a damaged plane. Ford didn't receive a single medal for valor, even though he (and Bush) probably saw more combat than Kennedy. The last co-president to have combat experience was, of course, Hillary dodging sniper fire in the Balkans.
