Because "property damage" is the only actual proof we know of in this story. To speculate on the cause of his actions is irresponsible journalism (despite the fact that tons of news outlets speculate all the time).

IMO, Zay strikes me as a level-headed kid with the right type of character/attitude to have a decent career in the NFL. I think the dude has been chasing the pro football dream since he was little and that kept him away from the party scene through high school/college as he held his focus on making it into the NFL. Now that he's in the league, he's probably cutting loose and experimenting with things he's inexperienced with.

There could be some underlying mental health issues but unless you're his doctor, nobody knows for sure.

I think it reflects the known details of what happened, which were likely few at the time and perhaps still are. If that's what he's charged with, that's what's mentioned. Has zero to do with sensitivity etc.

"Arrested for property damage" is a convenient headline for the NFL that basically says: "entitled black football player doesn't respect other person's property and is arrested"

Anyone who watched that video knows this is not a 'property damage' case.  IMO, I think it's intentional to gloss over the event as simple criminal act when there is clearly something larger at play.

I think that mental health is becoming the biggest scapegoat for everything today. Anything bad happens, its a mental health issue. It can explain anything today. Maybe he just took some drugs and had a bad reaction to them. Doesn't mean he has some type of mental health issue unless you feel anyone who takes drugs or drinks for whatever issue has mental health issues. This is like kids today, don't want to do something or act up or won't pay attention? It's AD/HD

It doesn't appear like Day has had any issues in the past with drugs or anything, might just have been a something stupid and bad reaction to some drugs

All they can do from a PR perspective is report the facts. They start talking about drugs, bad for the brand. They start talking about mental health while he's still likely in an evaluation process, bad for the brand.

Well he did damage property and that's probably the only charge they could lay at the time, unless it's illegal to be under the influence on private property? If they didn't find actual drugs in his possession at the scene I don't think there's anything else to charge him for, especially if his brother or others in attendance don't want to lay assault charges....

There's 29 pages of expert testimony on this board alone as to what caused it.  A combination of synthetic drugs, likely flakka, amphetamines, and deep seeded depression stemming from childhood trauma from that time in the park when a man in a dirty clown suit threatened that if I didn't poop on his chest he would kill my whole family.

Whyd you say “I”...?

Are you projecting?

What the heck does the race of the player have to do with it? Ridiculous. If he was charged with property damage that's all that matters. No one has had their day in court yet.

To be fair "NFL player high on synthetic drugs, likely flakka, and suffering from deep seeded depression stemming from childhood trauma from that time in the park when a man in a dirty clown suit threatened that if I didn't poop on his chest he would kill my whole family, arrested for property damage"  is a tad long for a headline.

I agree that it's an easy scapegoat these days.... But I see the NFL as intentionally dodging this with the headline.  Imagine someone throws a CTE claim at being involved with this situation?  That's a pretty scary scenario and I think the NFL wants this to disappear... I sound like a super conspiracy theorist now...

Lol so you think journalists suddenly remembered their duty to be objective?

LMFAO

Heck when I was younger we'd get **** faced drunk while doing all kinds of crazy substances. Fights broke out on a rare occasion while inebriated only to be resolved the following days... Many times lessons were learned and never repeated

Hardly mental health issue, just way too much of a good thing turning things sour

The funnier things is I'm still extremely close with these same friends 30+ years later. We had the best of times we had the worst of times but we grew closer in the processes

Lol so you think every single news outlet in the entire world is wrought with subjective, speculative journalists? Did you count them all?

WTF does him being black have to do with anything?

And it is a property damage case.... because that's what he was freakin' arrested for... but yes, your theory of independent news outlets intentionally glossing over "something larger at play" is much more plausible because hey, black, entitled, football player. Maybe you read too many tabloid headlines because it sounds like you were expecting to read sh*t like, "FILTHY RICH INSANE LUNATIC ENTITLED BLACK PLAYER OF FOOTBALL HAS MANIACAL DRUG INDUCED MELTDOWN, SMASHES WINDOW, TRIES TO KILL SELF, THIS IS ALL A COVER FOR THE FACT THAT HE IS ACTUALLY A LIZARD PERSON FROM THE PLANET FARTLAX!!!"

These threads are conversational and unfortunately DO require some pensiveness to try and understand various arguments.  Your uneasiness about the slightest mention that 'race' is also unsettling to me.

Be unsettled all you want, your pointing out of his race has absolutely zero to do with anything in this story. At the very bottom, baseline level of this story, these are the current known facts: Male athlete injures self while destroying window on 30th floor of apartment complex, attempts to jump out of it, restrained by his brother, arrested on charges of property damage.

Does it look like this happened because of a drug-induced psychosis? Yeah, it does. But that's still conjecture until more facts emerge. And yeah, objective journalism still exists. I'm not exactly sure what you meant by your belief that the news is somehow covering for him for "something much bigger" by only reporting the known facts at this time. What's to gain for any news outlet with a story like this? I understand we are living in an age of subjective and sensationalist journalism but a story like this doesn't warrant that type of stuff because what's the point? It's not like the news has any interest in writing stories in such a way that make the Bills look good or somehow "covers" for a player who made some bad decisions and is now dealing with the consequences.

You pointed out the actual story, I bolded it for you above... It's so clearly not just a property damage story and anyone who reads the current headlines will glance past the story and assume it as a petty criminal act.

So you pick, piss-poor journalism in choosing a headline, OR side-stepping a mental illness discussion.

Anyone notice all the Major headlines (ESPN.com NFL.com etc.) regarding Zay Jones incident?

They all just state a guy being arrested for property damages... This story is not a 'property damage' story and the article titles are intentionally misleading IMO.

I think it shows how sensitive the NFL still is with any association to mental health issues.

What is Zay's mental health diagnosis?
