The bug isn't in the programming they did, it is in the programming they didn't do.  Drivers -- automated or human -- have a responsibility to drive with reasonable care.  Plowing ahead if someone isn't in a crosswalk isn't driving with reasonable care (provided that's what happened).

I cross a road frequently used by semi trucks, there is a stop sign on a crosswalk (not a road intersection). Most of the time the road is empty of pedestrians so a lot of trucks just blow past the sign. But I've seen pedestrians start walking assuming the trucks will stop.

 

I always wait. I'm not going to risk my life by assuming the driver is alert, or that his brakes work.

I was crossing the street in the crosswalk at a four way stop intersection this afternoon.  Monster SUV stops at the sign then drives thru while I'm still in the middle of the crosswalk.

Other day I was crossing street after moving my car crossing in crosswalk (no light) which is one block down from entrance from work; crosswalk at work is often blocked by work trucks (truck is literally across crosswalk) necessitating walking into road between vehicles with low visibility.  I get to mid road on narrow divider and a car beeps at me and I turn and tell drive it is a crosswalk (poorly painted at that) and the driver stops and she tells me to calm down and she just wanted to tell me she was there.  I have right of way and I have drivers frequently honking at me as they turn corner at speeds over speed limit.  How is beeping at pedestrian who has already crossed side of your road supposed to help.

Wow, good thing they had a "saftey driver" sitting there staring at their cell phone!

 

Of course that doesn't excuse the woman strolling across the road in the direct path of a car.  No indication there was any crosswalk anywhere near her from that video, and even if there was, you are only supposed to walk out and just assume the cars will stop if you live in California.

has anyone had a chance to try a self driving car?  i did last week on a test drive, and it was nothing short of awkward.  the sales rep made sure i always had my hands at least lightly on the wheel regardless, (apparently that's what they tell everyone) and i just couldn't get into it.  it followed the lanes nicely, but something was just off.  !@#$ those things.

Would you detail car/autonomous platform? There are competitors and not all AI/algorithms used are the same. Curious as to which you used that left you with this impression.

From that video, no way a human avoiding that person either. Maybe the human eye detects her better in the night, that is my only question. And, I will still take a self driving car over a texting human 100% of the time.

 

I want one today...and a umpah lumpa!

sure.  it was the 2018 volvo xc 90.  to be completely fair, the rep described it as something that really shouldn't drive the car on its own.  he said it was something that could be used on longer trips to allow the driver to be more comfortable, and again, that your hands should at minimum be lightly touching the wheel.

that's what it looked like..but that's from a camera..can the human eye detect movement or a reflection etc better than the camera is my only question. I would tend to think not, but I just don't know. I always think of golf when we can see just fine on TV, but the announcers are saying the golfers cant see the ball..something about opening the avature of the camera...would think these rigs be the same.

I drive on dark country roads all the time and I usually don't see the !@#$ing deer until they are in my path or the lights make their eyes shine.  

 

The human was not paying attention from what I saw but still he'd have hit her.

The report I read said that the pedestrian came completely out of nowhere and the police "believe" that no one could have avoided that, autonomous or not.

I am an early adopter of technology and would try a fully autonomous vehicle when it is available. As plenzmd points out, too many drivers are distracted and that contributes significantly to accidents.

I cannot control the other drivers but I know that there are other things that I would rather be doing most times when I am driving. Heck, I am a remote season ticket holder with a roughly 500 mile trek to the stadium. I would rather surf, snooze, drink, etc. than concentrate on driving. I am looking forward to an autonomous vehicle.

That's never been the point of autonomous travel.  This isn't The Simpsons with Homer driving a big rig.

 

Anyway...

My 19 year old son just got side-swiped in January by a 50 year old ditz not paying attention, & more attention to here phone. He was stopped, stationary.

Please explain. Though long-distance autonomous car travel may not be at the forefront of early deployment design, there are plenty of articles that specifically call out long-distance autonomous car trips and the impact it may have on airline travel.
