If Saquan Barkley really is a better NFL prospect than Zeke.

Bill, As Kirby stated, White, a CB, was a tremendous pick in the lower first round. So far from what he has exhibited he would still be a terrific pick as a higher first round pick. As far as retaining players or not that is just a byproduct of the cap system. Losing players because of financial considerations is an inescapable part of the system. Organizations that are smart are organizations that in general draft well to more cheaply replace the inevitable player departures.

This next draft for me is a moment of truth. I believe that we are in a good position to secure a franchise qb. If it is not done this year then it represents another pivot point where this hollow organization has let an opportunity pass them by while they continue on their way to continued irrelevancy.

My opinion on drafting except for the qb position is if the player selected turns out to be a good player no matter the position then it is a good pick. In a system where the failure rate for draftees is high picking a good player should be deemed a success.

I agree 100% with the bolded. If they think that one of these kids will be a better than average qb they absolutely must draft him.

As far as White, imo its too early to say, but I think that the draft was mishandled.

As for "good" players being "good" picks, I disagree in part. Donte Whitner was "good," but he was one of the all time worst draft Bills selections (quite the accomplishment indeed) because of who Levy passed up to draft him. The same can be said for McKelvin. The way I see it, good draft picks are the players that win you football games.

Jmo John and I am sure we will reach a consensus of sorts. We usually do. ;)

In general you and I are usually in sync with few differences. On the defensive backfield issue I have to give the wrestling coach credit for the masterful way he completely revamped the defensive backfield and altered the system. In my snap view I consider the LSU CB, White, a gem. And I also consider Gaines, acquired in the Watkins deal, a very good CB. The two added safeties are also good. This remade unit is a tribute to McDermott having a system and bringing in players who very well fit the system. Coaching and organizational coherence matters!

If there is a stud QB there and we draft a RB I will choke McBean myself.

I heard him called "the best RB since Barry Sanders" this monring. He's the best college football player imo. He will be a top 3 pick though. The best desperately lack skill players and if you could add Barkley it would be HUGE. I don't think that will happen but I'm just saying I could get behind it. Edited by Kirby Jackson

If the Bills were in position to draft Barkley and then used picks to trade up again to get a qb I wouldn't be adverse to it unless the Bills had an opportunity to draft Darnold with their first pick.

I said this on other posts so excuse me for the repetition but I still don't understand why Jonathan Williams was cut and the wrestling coach's fascination with Tolbert as the second back. It's perplexing.

I don't care if he's Bo Jackson, if we pass on Elway the pitchforks will be out!

I think that tackling Tolbert hurts defenses. Defenders are smaller and faster these days. There are good players today that might not have made a roster 20 years ago. I like what I have seen of Tolbert. When the weather gets colder and the winds howl, I have a feeling that Tolbert will be appreciated even more as he grinds out first downs and physically punishes opponents.

That's kind of where I'm at. I think that the 1st round has to turn out an elite skill player in addition to QB. We just will never be able to trade scores with the elite offenses otherwise. I don't care if we had Peyton Manning in his prime right now there aren't plays to be made. They are playing 8 man boxes, can't get to the edge and have no separation on the outside.

I don't care if he's Bo Jackson, if we pass on Elway the pitchforks will be out!

Of course but if we pass on Brady Quinn for Barry Sanders people will be thrilled.

They will be drafting a QB I would think (although not guarantee). Supposedly the staff is high on Tyrod. I can't see them picking high enough for Barkley anyways. He may be the Browns pick as they continue to load up on talent. I'm simply saying that I could get behind it.

I would go Peterson and Fournette before Barkley if we are going that far back to someone like Barry Sanders.

Barkley is a great prospect, for sure top ten guy but I wouldnt put him over the two I mentioned before until the end of the year.

I didn't have Fournette nearly as high as most. He's a physical runner with great speed but constantly battled injuries and was a little soft. Zeke was a better prospect than Fournette. His game was/is more complete (although the odd the field stuff is concerning). Peterson is the best pure runner that I remember coming out since Sanders. Barkley has it all though. He's a surefire star.

I believe it was Emmit Smith who stated that the only player he felt that could jump from high school to the pro ranks was Adrian Peterson. That's how physically gifted he was. Now he is a shadow of what he once was. As it already been demonstrated he is going to have trouble accepting a secondary role as a player.
