If you dive into the numbers, the average number of defensive points per game allowed across the league (normalized to remove opponents' defensive and special teams TDs) was 21.164. Buffalo allowed an average of 23.063 defensive points per game in 2016, which ranked 20th. Absolutely it would've so why change anything on offense? Average would be a dream. See above. When the defense was having a rough go of it, the offense needed to string plays together and would go three and out. I can think of several games where this happened. You don't just become a great passing team because your OC used to coach Peyton Manning. "Let's get Romo or Brees or Rivers!" Uhhh what?? I don't know if you are all delusional or if you really think that is a possibility. Romo is going to Denver and Brees and Rivers are staying where they are and will be retired in a couple years. Nobody is packing up their family to move to Buffalo because derpy mcderp on the Bills forum thinks it would be really awesome. If they break up this offense it's going to take a couple of years to get the right players and know the plays. They are already planning on having a new defense as well. This team is hitting the reset button if they replace the entire coaching staff so add season 18 to the drought if that's the case. The issue that many, including me, have with the offense is that it was not versatile (and talented enough at the QB position) to use our weapons appropriately. I am certain that Whaley sees this as well and knows the right QB can unlock it. Who wants another year to see our $$$ TE waving his hand to give him the ball 15 yards downfield. When our all-world WR SMOKES his CB and the FS is on the other side of the field, many (including me) would like a QB that at least looks his way. We have LeSean McCoy/Gillislee and some great run blocking OLmen - I trust that a professional OC can put those pieces to work and add to them. What we lose in TT's legs, we should gain in balanced passing attack. Imagine that opposing DC's have to worry where we line Sammy up and god forbid we run a slant with him, and end around, or an ODB-style crossing route. We should have a big bodied WR2 and our TE for the medium passing game and to eat up yards while defenses have to double Sammy. Turnovers will increase, maybe sacks too, but so will TD passes, passing yards gained, difficulty to defend, comeback ability, 2-minute ability and long balls. Force defenses into a Cover-2 all game to put a lid on Sammy and lets get the guys to eat up everything underneath until the safety starts to cheat. Oh, and our defense should be improved. Would be nice to think about Phil Rivers or Brees commanding the O. Realistically, lets say it's Glennon and he gives us 3750 19TD/13int. Shady gets barely 1,000 but Sammy goes for 1200 and 9tds and WR2 800/4 and clay 700/4. I would say sign me up and fix that D starting with a Safety in the 1st or 2nd round. Use the other 1st or 2nd for the WR2 spot and start developing Cardale to compete for the starting role the following year or 2. I think it's that many see potential wasted here year in/out and simply want to see what they believe our weapons can do with a competent NFL QB. IF we totally bust out, then burn it to the ground. Who's available that would be an upgrade from Tyrod that is realistic? If i tell you a rookie( which I am for) you'll laugh and say thats a joke. I don't see a big drop off in the running gameSD's OL had been a train wreck and finally solidified this year. Constantly had guys in and out due to injury though. Gordon had a very underrated season. My main complaint with McCoy was he would run the ball successfully all the way down the field and then throw 3-4 straight times in the red zone often unsuccessfully. He loosened up a little this season on the punting and 4th down decisions. Note that for most of this season, Tyrell Williams and Dontrell Inman were the #1 and #2 options at WR. Carpenter was absolutely part of the problem...can't miss the easy ones (although I do recognize that not every kicker can be Dan Bailey). I certainly won't absolve the defense--they hung the offense out to dry against Miami (twice) and the Jets (twice).
