Every day I see postings on this board rationalizing, excusing, hoping, blaming, thinking we are one or two players away from playoff nirvana. Despite 17 years of average play and really poor drafting, that includes Doug Whaley. I would love to hear Bill B. open and talk about the Bills; he would burn this organization down in twenty - four hours.

their defense is great...but that's what happens when you keep the same system and keep drafting guys for said system. not getting a succesful defense in a system and then changing the system. same with ravens. year in year out their defense is solid. get us a coach to keep the same system going and watch this team be successful.

Maybe the front office but not the players. He would change the culture. Change the schemes to fit the players' style/strengths. Change the work ethic and attitude. He'd get his guys running SP, RBs, WRs, QBs, DBs, etc. But he could make our team hum with the current players. I'm positive.

They currently have a bunch of guys who are not tied specifically to any scheme. They've had straight nose tackles like wilfork, and have rotated in more penetration style players like Kyle Williams.

They tend to gameplan better than most team's at defense and are not dependent on scheme or deception. A guy might see 40 snaps one week and 15 the next, and he doesn't complain or say a word. Their defense currently isn't "great" - but they also don't have a bunch of high priced talent on that side of the ball. Good mix of young guys and older guys on cheaper 2nd/3rd contracts.

D-line - Flowers, Brown, Long, Sheard, Valentine

Lbs - Hightower, Roberts, McClellin, Van Noy

DBs - Butler, Ryan, and Jones - with McCourtey and Chung in the back.

No one there is like blowing you away - maybe hightower? But they liked what they saw in Butler and Roberts so much to jettison Revis and Collins. They got o-line help with a pick from trading away Chandler Jones. Now they have a good/great rotation of o-lineman after depth there previously was a weakness.

They also aren't afraid to dump players who want too much money - mankins, collins, and jones come to mind. The value they got back wasn't amazing necessarily, but they don't have majorly bad contracts on their payroll so that flexibility lets them be competitive with the mid-tier free agents that they covet. They can also add big short-term contracts because of their cap management.

they are second in the league for points allowed...17,7. that is great. they've had the same type defense whatever it is for a long time. we are constantly switching up one scheme to another and having to shed guys to fit and we pay big money to guys that dont fit.

They only have 8 picks this year - They have played the Kessler/Whitehurst browns, the Goff Rams, the Kaep 49ers, and Houston. They do a good job stopping the run, and have an offense that puts up points (5th in PPG - even including a shutout with their 3rd string qb).

They're top 10 - but i wouldn't put them at top 5. PPG isn't the most reliable statistic to me.

I love how Bill B. sees Hogan's hidden value while he wastes away in Buffalo, and then simply buys him with a strong offer sheet in RFA that he knows the Bills won't match. He knows what he wants and knows how to find it. Once he gets it, it slots into his system like a spare part and the machine keeps whirring along.

In contrast, Whaley is doing crazy ass amateur stuff like throwing away multiple first round picks for an obvious sexy choice at WR despite having no one who can throw him the ball.

Compare BB to Whaley, the Hogan acquisition by NE to our acquisition of Watkins...

The 2 franchises are light years apart as noted upstream.

Awesome post; but you need a solid organization to accomplish this - scouting and coaching. We have neither! BB is about winning, I love watching the various stories about him on the NFL channel.

Hogan runs precise routes and has excellent hands. Some coaches would rather have the Steve Largent than the Renaldo Nehemiah.

Belichick collects picks - the new CBA added a rookie wage scale so it's massively cheaper to get solid contributors on their first contracts. The comp picks he gets are further added to that, and he seems to target cap casualties often for players on 3rd deals.

He'll extend players he likes a lot - but only at their perceived value to him. Not market value.

Hogans value to them is a receiver with enough speed to blow the top off of a defense, but other discernible skills. Like hands and route running.

He's also an a passionate, unselfish player, who plays teams without complaining. Sounds like a patriots player to me...

And he knows to pick young guys that can be coached to be in the right place at the right time and do the right thing. He doesn't take knuckleheads like Jerry Hughes. You look over the years at all the huge plays made by unsung guys for NE; Butler's SB pick, the guy who broke up Lee Evans' TD in the AFCC, Troy Brown stripping Marlon McCree to save a playoff game against SD, whoever stripped the ball out of Leo's hands on that kick return. None of those things were accidents. The Pats have 11 guys who know what they are doing and are aware of the circumstances on virtually every play. That's coaching.

If you don't have the coach and QB, the rest is meaningless.

 Awesome post!

Comparing Hogan and Largent? Sorry man, but

Would not laugh to hard; we will see who ends up with SB ring! That is still what its all about!

Having a great QB is what you need. The Pats have WR injuries. You don't hear Brady and Bellicheck making excuses like TT and Rex.

And personnel. They seem to have the right formula for replacing skills positions with other guys that make just keep making plays. Btw they were undefeated with gorropolo too.

No welker? Fine ... Watson was a monster TE, but then he left... herdandez and Gronk are up. Ones in jail and the other is hurt? No problem.

The system just keeps going.
