The MMQB: Other topics of business at the league meetings …

Goodell: The expansion of the playoffs will be discussed.

The MMQB: Why has that cooled?

Goodell: I don’t think it’s cooled at all. There are a lot of factors that go into it. One, we want to be right when we do it … It’s something that we think has got a lot of merit from a competitive side, because it would actually add more teams to the race as you get toward the end of the season. There’s the broadcasting side of it. When would you play that extra game? [A seventh playoff team in each conference would leave] one bye for the first seed in each conference.

The MMQB: What about playing a wild-card game on a Monday night?

Goodell: You could. Potential conflict that comes in there is the national championship game, because that would interfere in some years with that. We’re respectful of college football.

The MMQB: Theoretically doesn’t it make a lot of sense, if you don’t have to worry about college football, to have six games on wild-card weekend? You play two Saturday, three Sunday, and one Monday. Is that the most logical?

Goodell: Sure. But again, you have to consider college football, which is important to us.

The MMQB: What are the odds this year that you change playoffs from 12 to 14?

Goodell: You know we don’t deal in odds around here. [Laughing.] Here’s the other thing from the television partners—with the addition of [full-season] Thursday Night Football last year, we put a lot more of additional advertising inventory in the marketplace. Usually it takes a couple of years to absorb that. Then if you add in the fact that the college football playoff came in, it gave us a lot more inventory that time of year. And ticket sales, I think that’s another big issue. We want to advance this postseason policy a little more effectively so that we have confidence. You know, you could have a situation where a team ends up with two home games at the end of the season and you could end up winning your division and then play three home playoff games. You could have five home games in five weeks at the end of the season and into January. If you have a northern climate, that’s a lot to ask of your fans. So we have a lot to balance.

playoff expansion and no blackouts. these are things that would have benefited us more a couple of years ago but now neither of these should be a problem with a team like this!

i think they should do it though. give the division winners a bye and everyone else has to fight it out in the wildcard

If they expand to 14, then there would be 7 teams from each conference. Only the conference #1 seed would get a bye while the other 6 battle it out on wild card weekend for the 3 remaining spots.

If we did get in as the extra team and not one of the top 6, would the end of our streak come with an asterisk?

If we made it as a 7th seed, I'd bet my bottom dollar that there will be a 20+ page thread started by some Debbie-Downer saying how the Bills suck because of X, Y, and Z and don't deserve to be in the playoffs.

thanks, I didn't see they were talking about only adding 1 more team per conference. that seems like a strange way to do but it but ok

There should be a way to bypass a division winner if they have a losing record or whatever happened in the NFC south last season

Yes. However, considering it was the 2nd time ever in NFL history, it's not usually an issue. But it is a problem and should have some sort of alternative means to pick a playoff team

Dear League:

Stop !@#$ing with the game. How's about leaving the rules and format alone for five years, so that we can actually enjoy it without having to learn new rules?

Exactly! Why do they continue to F with the game, when it's fine, now!

Dear League:

Go learn the history of the league.

The NFL is the most progressive sports league in the world, the game completely reinvents itself from decade to decade over time. 6 teams in the NFL playoffs is a relatively new concept, all other things considered. Asking the NFL to remain static is like grumbling about pop-culture changing--it's bound to happen, don't be the grumpy old guy in the corner.

A conservative management style in a sports league is what Selig did to baseball. Every commissioner in NFL history has been progressive and forward thinking. Those two leagues are heading in two different directions, and have been for 30 years. The NFL isn't some "fad", and there's nothing "wrong" with baseball--the public just needs to accept a very basic fact: sports are pop entertainment.

As the will, wants, and hopes of the American public changes, the leagues need to be responsive to those changes. It's selling a product, not grandstanding on the pressing moral issues of the 21st century. I can almost guarantee that within 25 years, there will be "limited" commercial interruptions to the games, with ads all over the field, the jerseys and the scoreboard.

People sit here and bang on their computers all day and night:

"wah wah wah too many commercials the bills dont make the playoffs, not fair, you need an all world qb to do anything"

then, like a rat in a cage, you're given your food pellet of expanded playoffs. you might be a little disturbed at the sight of this pellet at first, but youll eat it, love it, and ask for more.

theres people a lot smarter, richer, and invested than YOU figuring out how to separate you from your dollar at NFL head quarters.

But please, return to your regularly scheduled goodell bashing.
