I'm far from convinced that's enough time to learn a new NFL offense. Even if it is, he'll have had only one week to develop any kind of chemistry with the starting receivers. He'll be going up against the #1 ranked defense. As though all this was not enough, the Bills have issues at offensive guard. I expect Orton to look worse than he has in the past--at least for the next game or two. I'm fairly certain any NFL QB can throw the ball 3 yards pass the LOS. It's the chance that ORton might throw a ball 8 yards past the LOS regularly that he brings. He doesn't have to learn the entire offense just the sets we expect to run against the Lions and some counters for that. He will probably have the wristband on . None of this matters.. he's in the lineup because Marrone decided EJ wasn't getting it done. You don't sit your unquestioned starter, when he's healthy, and then say... you gotta give the backup time to learn the system. In any event, if this weren't the Bills I would argue that the coach would never put Orton in unless he saw good things in practice. However, this is the Bills, so who knows. Learning the game plan for Detroit is all he needs to worry about. This will be like the 4th or 5th NFL offense Kyle's learned. I'm sure he's picked it up enough in 5 weeks to be able to run it. Who knows, he may have that Flute type effect where the whole level of the team rises when he plays. I've seen it happen with several QBs over the years. The guy is a vet and they expect results. If they're hoping a QB is going to grow into the roll then Orton isn't the guy you start. I do like the excuse train that's already in place for Orton though. After the last two weeks I'm convinced that EJ needs to sit and watch for awhile but I'm not going to have any patience for a vet going in there and not getting the job done. If Orton can't get the job done then Manuel needs to be put back in the lineup. If the team is going to struggle they might as well do it with a young QB learning the ropes. You realize that decision had more to do with who Tebow was and where he was drafted than because of poor play by Orton or lack of faith in his ability? They are making the switch because they aren't getting results from the position. He needs to come out and execute, thats why he was paid as much as he was. 5-6 weeks is plenty of time, that's how long he would have had if he came to Training Camp. thewildrabbit Posted September 30, 2014 Share Posted September 30, 2014 My first though was....No Mr Bond, we expect you to die! I have visions of Jordan Palmer looking good in comparison. This game should really be interesting, as the current brain trust must firmly believe that the starting OG's can get it done, and it was all just a bad QB. The Chargers don't have anywhere near the talent of this Detroit front four, and yet they were able to destroy that line by simply stunting to cause confusion. This Detroit defense is 6th against the pass, and 7th against the run. I find it a tad disconcerting that Schwartz leaves Detroit and the defense improves from 15th to 1st. What gets me is at least last year the Bills tried to run more to help out the young QB's. This year they expect him to play like a seasoned vet and come out throwing against a team with a weak rush defense, and fierce pass rush. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
