So the 49ers have $825,000 in cap space and what 11 picks? Are they going to have to cut people to sign their rookies?

I was wondering the same thing.

Any of you guys know how a team that has less than $5 million can sign rookies?? The Niners have $800k...doesn't that mean they will be over the cap at some point??

One part of the equation is that only your top 51 players count against the cap. The 49ers are a pretty stacked team so not many of them are going to make the top 51.

Thanks - hence the reason why there was no need to panic when we didn't sign 10 free agents on Day 1 & 2 of Free Agency...there will be alot of "drop apples" after training camp.

As only the top 51 contracts are counted towards the cap........it will work out that the 4th, 5th & 6th rounders will not count.

That estimate would then only be 3.77m.

But the top ones will.

Looking at these two pages....

http://www.overthecap.com/rookiepool.php?Team=49ers

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-francisco-49ers/cap-hit/

.....the 49ers first 4 picks will count.....for an estimated total of $3.4m.

They are going to need to re-structure or cut somebody to make it under the cap.

but that wont be until they start signing guys. they are in no rush. if they draft a guys replacement, they might end up with a net gain in space in the long run.

Agreed.

I didn't mean to imply that they were going to have to have a fire sale or something similar.....just that they can't stand with their current roster/contracts with their rookies.

They have 13 picks and probably only 2-3 positions not completely locked down. I'm sure between their stacked roster and lack of cap space to sign them, they will either have to trade the picks away or cut a bunch of draftees later. Definitely worth taking a look by Nix if they decide to draft and cut them later.
