Yup. The system can be used for good, and bad. In this case, it's bad and the future will agree. Unless we're ruled by mullahs in 50 years.

Thats what your missing. This is the first step. The next one will be application of the 14th Amendment, which will rule this measure illegal.

Its a long painful process. But it was designed that way. And in the end it works. Its cold confort for those who will be discrimiated against today, though.

Embarrasing, indeed. I still have yet to hear an intelligent, persuasive argument against legalizing gay marriage. It always comes down to "my invisible friend in the sky says it's wrong in his big book of Middle Eastern fairytales. Plus two dudes kissing is just !@#$ing gross."

I always get a kick of out so called "enlightened" atheists who can do no better than childish denigration of the faithful. They are what they claim to despise.

I assume you're being serious?

It's called "tyranny of the majority." The majority were once against miscegenation. Not too long ago, in fact.

Versus tyranny of the minority? Why I cant string Christmas lights across my desk at work becuase ONE atheist like yourself got "offended" by them?

Or is it only "tyranny" when its a ruling for something you dont like?

So in conclusion, it's embarrassing because the people against gay marriage aren't an atheist like you? So you're saying the world would be a better place if no one would waste their time believing in God?

Interesting.

What is embarrassing is a religion that preaches tolerance has so many members willing to cast stones at others who don't fall into lock step with their beliefs. "Everyone is free to believe their own beliefs as long as they match mine," correct?

It is not the religion that is the problem. Not in the least. Don't group people together who don't fit together.

Democracy and free elections are "mob-based" when you don't like the result?

No, but like any other system, there are flaws.

Yep, if it were so easy to make everything perfect, somebody would have done it already. Problem is that no two people have the same definition of perfect, and few care what anyone else's definition is.

They casted votes, not stones. The government shouldn't even be in the marriage definition business. That distinction should be left up to religions.

Adults who comprise the "faithful" aren't worthy of anything beyond childish denigration, particularly when they vote on bad public policy because their imaginary friend (as opposed to logic and reason) informs them of what's right and what's wrong.

Also, I'm not in the business of defending every overly sensitive atheist simply because I'm an atheist. You should be allowed to publicly celebrate your religion. I will defend you all day and every day on that.

"Gay people will abuse the system by marrying so they can get health benefits...it will bankrupt the (government/biz world)" is one that's come up here. You know, because heteros have not had that opportunity.

"Let's just leave marriage to man-woman and call homosexual commitment something else because my book/god says that's an OK compromise." Because that makes any sense to legislate that kind of difference in treatment.

We'll get there. It's not a pressing issue but it does make all the people against look bigoted and stupid. Yes OC, bigoted.

I had this discussion yesterday with my parents. We went out for dinner and the topic came up, I told them that if I had to vote one way or another, I'd Vote to allow them to marry. What do I care? I figure why should I get in the way of the pursuit of happiness of someone else's future? Very simple approach.

My parents on the other hand, who harbor no ill-will towards anyone, have a different view than I do. My mother, a devout catholic has a view that is derived from religious teachings. Without going into detail, just that she has a moral compass that is guided by the bible. My father, not nearly as religious, has a different take, which is that he opposes gay marriage because he is more of a traditionalist. He is an old-school sorta guy.

I've never heard them speak negatively towards gays or any other minority group, just that they have a different view that you and I have. I think it's ok to disagree with people without referring to them as "bigots". I find this sort of view as one of intolerance and I wouldn't generalize that people who are opposed to gay marriage as such. Are there a lot of bigots out there? Certainly, but to cast a net on everyone who is opposed to gay marriage as bigots is a view that I find to be quite narrow.

Yes, but that will cause other problems- what if some religions recognize it, then certain people in government don't want to recognize the marriages in some religions they disagree with? (at least when it comes to benefits)

My grandfather was opposed to his daughter marrying a black guy because it would "cause trouble" and wasn't "normal." Never heard him say boo about black people until that situation arose.

You know what. He was a bigot. He didn't like someone and didn't want them to be happy based on their race.

Your mom stands in the way of two people marrying who love each other for no other reason than they are the same sex. Your dad just finds it gross. That's awful.

Interesting.

I'm saying that the world would be a better place if people relied on logic and reason to make public policy decisions.

That's ok , your parents may have been bigots, but mine certainly are not.

That would be nice, but it is unrealistic, unfortunately. In a world full of diverse viewpoints, different people follow different logic, to reach different conclusions. And they usually get overly emotional when defending their conclusions.

My grandfather was. He was also a kind and loving guy, a great father, and a great grandfather. People are complicated like that.

Doesn't mean he wasn't bigoted in that he would stand in the way of someone's happiness for no good reason other than they are different.

Thomasville husband and wife Robert and Barbara Hustler, like others, came to participate in the electoral process.

“I am voting because I think our country is in a world of trouble. Our freedoms are being taken away,” said Barbara Hustler of Thomasville.

When it comes to the hot issue of the marriage amendment, Barbara and her husband, Robert Hustler, were for the amendment.

“Marriage is between a man and a woman,” Barbara said.

“Period,” Robert added.

It's funny because it's sad. What's your state's collective IQ? Six?

Even more ironic- “I came for the marriage amendment,” said Daryl Carter of Midway. “I am for it because I believe it is a biblical way that God wants us to live our lives. I go by what the Bible says and not what man says.”

Yep, there is no irony in that statement. :wallbash:

I was just pointing out the ridiculousness of someone mocking people for not believing in something because of something he doesn't believe in. And because believing in God is not logical to him, believing in gay marriage should be logical to everyone.

I'm not particularly religious and I have no problem with gay marriage, but people who openly mock Christians in general are kinda douchebags to me. I'm not talking about extreme Christian nutjobs. I'm talking about my family, friends and neighbors who gather together in fellowship based on a belief and faith and desire to help others.

You hit the nail on the head- for good people, religion is intrinsic and a reason to do good for others for no particular gain. For others, it is like bureaucracy and is just their to continually build on itself.

I'd love to see a graph of measured IQ vs. support of gay marriage.

Instead of population density map...IQ density map. Also, teeth. Somehow I feel they'd correlate. Then again...I am probably related to this entire town, 4 of the biggest names in this area are all related to me...errr...****.

And yet you openly mock liberals here on PPP because they believe in things that you find illogical... Hello, pot! It's me, kettle!

Wrong. I don't mock liberals because i find them illogical. I mock them because they have proven time and again to be the most hypocritical and disingenuous of all people. They claim to fight for the weak and poor; they claim that the problems in this world all come down to the rich and uber-wealthy...the evil corporate pigs who sit on a stool, clicking their gold coins and laughing at the downtrodden; they insist that the ONLY way to equalize this is through the government, because we're all too stupid to take care of ourselves, and only the government can save Julia from a life of prostitution and gun-running.

And when they are done telling us this wonderful word, they take a limo to their jet, fly to a private party at the palatial estate of yet another rich liberal before spending a few days at Martha's Vineyard on a friend's yacht before cutting their annual $20 check to some obscure charity.

But hey...at least they're not those stupid people dedicating their time, money and energy to help others in need based on some stupid fairy tale, right? THAT really deserves to be mocked.

That's fine. It comes from both sides, so i wasn't intentionally saying that certain religions are the only ones casting stones. As for me, i was raised catholic. i still have faith, and still believe in God, yet i have stepped away from the "religion" aspect of everything largely in part for the reasons i mentioned above. I've seen too many supposed "religious" types act the opposite of what they supposedly stand for, including people very close to me. That doesn't mean all do. But too many for my liking to stay with the religion.

You'll find hypocrites and disingenuous people on both sides of the political spectrum. And you'll find good people that help others on both sides of the religiosity spectrum.

Moving a bit back on topic, I'd like to see someone here who is against gay marriage state their case without invoking any of these 4 arguments:

1. God says it's wrong.

2. Gay people are gross.

3. It's just the way things have always been.

4. The majority of people don't like it.

Legally...in most states, sodomy is still illegal, and recognition of marriage requires the consummation thereof. Ergo, from a legal perspective, gay marriage can not be legally recognized, as it's a violation of statute to consummate it.

QED. :nana:

I was raised Catholic, too, and few things can turn you away from religion like sitting through a Catholic mass. On the other hand, I have a front row seat to a tremendous amount of selfless good provided by those of Christian faith, and I'm not a big fan of the short-sighted shallow-minded dolts who mock them, in general, because they're faith defies logic.
