Leading pass rush candidates with short arms

Recommended Posts

The Senior Bowl practice sessions are underway. Two leading pass rush candidates showed up with short arms; Courtney Upshaw's arm length is 31.0 inches. Melvin Ingram's is also 31 inches. It is well recognized that scouts and coaches like to see longer arms on their pass rushers which helps them disengage from o-line blockers. For comparison, guards Osemeli and Glen both had arm lengths of over 35 inches.

Will the length of Upshaw and Ingram cause these players to fall from their lofty positions on many mock draft estimates?

Upshaw's short arm length is almost as freakish as Peirre-Paul's long arm length.

I just don't see the Bills taking Upshaw. Someone with a much higher grade is probably going to fall to #10 and that's who the Bills will pick.

That's a mistake that I'm sure they'll regret.

Do you care to venture a guess as to who that might be?

With so many juniors declaring it's hard to get a feel for the player rankings right now. I think a few juniors will push themselves into the top 10 the next couple of months, so you may find Matt Kalil or Morris Claiborne falling to our pick. Upshaw looks very good, but when there's a guy with a much higher rating sitting there you probably could bet that he'll be the pick.

It's a factor, but not a huge one. Just take a look at some of the numbers from last year's combine:

Longer arms definitely help, but there are bigger factors like lower body explosivenss, hip flexibility, balance, etc. that can overcome short arms.

Arm length is very important for shedding those blocks, but any word on his hips? Does he swivel? Can he turn, you know, and really sink his hips, or are they too tight? How about the feet? Does he have the good feet? On a scale of low to high, how would you describe his motor?

This has been my feeling as well all along...Not that I hate Upshaw or anything like that...Just that there will be better Prospects available at #10 with MUCH higher Grades, and The Bills refuse to Trade Down...So I don't see Upshaw as a possibility at #10 at all... B-)

For the record, Tamba Hali has 30 inch arms.

If we're looking for a long armed pass rusher, look no further than Nick Perry from USC. Big, fast, great pass rushing moves, and his knuckles practically drag on the turf.

Seriously though, I think he is this year's version of Aldon Smith.

Thats the guy I want as well.

Courtney Upshaw is NOT a PASS RUSHING specialist.

He is an every down baker.

There is a difference.

He is not likely a 10+ sack guy in the NFL. You do not draft Upshaw with the hopes of him being your sack guy.

The Bills have ZERO decent OLBs on the roster.

If you draft Upshaw you draft him to be your new Daryl Talley and hope he becomes your new Biscuit. (Who by the way never got double digit sacks)
