Give Merriman a Chance Next Summer?

  1. 1. Do you cut him, or let him work to get a roster spot?

    • Cut him, cut our losses, he's worthless and expensive.

    • Give him a chance, when he's on, he's good and he's a good locker room presence.

Well?

His surgery was a success, apparently, so now he's on to rehab. I say we give him a chance next training camp/pre season to make the team. He showed flashes during pre-season and even during the regular season. He's been great for the psyche of the team, imo. He's been a good ambassador as well.

Why not, he already getting paid regardless.

+1

depends on the guaranteed money in his contract....

if it's zero, i would cut him.

Before we even find out if surgery helped him? Cut him before OTA's as punishment for sucking? Wouldn't it make more sense to wait until training camp? I seem to recall people demanding we cut Maybin before camp as well.

Not knowing the details of his contract aside, it is a no brainer that you bring him in.

The Bills have a horrible pass rush. Even if they do draft an OLB in round one or two, there is still a huge need for pas rushers on this team.

maybe after this surgery the Bills decide to see what he can do and if they feel at this point in his career he is a situational guy(rush specialist) they keep him.

He has shown a desire to help younger guys learn. That alone is worth a spot if he can still produce 10-15 plays a game.

Exactly what I was going to say. Great point about the situational pass rush role. I believe this will be in Shawnes cards for a few years (probably on this team) and then when he foes get too old he'll be cut and one last team will take a chance on him whose very close to the dance.

It is real simple, and there really isn't much to discuss.

Do the Bills have a salary cap problem?

No.

Is Merriman a distraction or causes harm to the team?

No. (He seems like a team guy and I wouldn't mind if he was hired as coach if he is done)

So you give him until Pre-Season to see if his lights go back "IN"?. . .or maybe "OUT"? Either way if he looks as dominant as he did this pre-season and doesn't get injured again you keep him on the team.

If he isn't healthy in Pre-Season you cut him and save the roster spot for a young guy.

(Also it'd be nice if that first round OLB you just drafted in the 2012 draft looks beastly in Pre-Season)

I voted keep him. I think whether we keep him or not depends a lot on how well Moats, Batten and Coleman develop. If two of them show that they can be solid starters (which I doubt), then maybe we have the luxury of letting him go, especially of we add an OLB in rd 1 or 2. I like the guy. He works hard, is a leader in the locker room and has the size and strength to hold up vs the run. As far as the cap goes, he's only under contract for 1 more year, so I don't see it as a problem.

You forgot option C: launch an investigation as to how bills could have been so misinformed of his physical condition when they signed him up for $7 million.

Maybe they knew the risks and thought it was worth it. The horse is dead, man. Quit beating it.

I voted to keep him, this team still needs talent. If he heals properly, he is talented.

Why not? Because he's shot! Do you seriously need more proof? Even when he was healthy (which has been one game in 4 years) he looked good against the worst O line in the NFL. Big deal. I'm sure he's a great guy and a leader but at this point the only thing he will be doing is taking reps away from others (that's if he can get onto the field.)

Hopefully Buddy gets it through his thick skull that an edge rusher is one of the most impactful positions in football and he drafts one before the 5th round. :wallbash:

He's only 27 and this injury has been a problem for a while. He FINALLY got surgery on it and hopefully its the end of it. He will now have plenty of time to come back. Keep him!!! He did nothing wrong for the team but help bring in some players. He is one good reason this team is 4-2.

Yep, Buddy is an idiot. Never coached football. Never spent any time as a scout. Has no idea how to break down film. The Bills are his very first NFL gig. Maybe the Bills can hire you to teach him the importance of edge rushers, amongst other things. I'm sure there's much you know that he's clueless about.

Dude proved in camp and the preseason that if his tendon stays healthy, he still has it. Why not give him a shot at this point?

Hell, bring Maybin back too, at least he can get on the field even if the doesn't contribute much, just like Merriman didn't contribute much. They shouldn't even consider him, bring in someone younger and healthier, or they will be in the same situation next October just like now.

Agreed. If he's completely healthy, he's a force the opposing team has to game plan against. BUT the Bills can't put all their eggs in one basket. Buddy Needs to sign Impacting Young FAs on Defense Next Season for us to be good, Maybe firing Edwards will help as well. Give Wannstedt the Job.
