When my son was in high school I found a can of fluorescent orange spay paint in his car. Naturally concerned, I asked what it was for. He said he and another friend from the football team had gone out for some cow tipping one night but they didn’t have the heart.....so they “decorated them” instead.  Ugh......

Side note:. I know spay paint is a typo but imagine if it were a real thing and could be brushed on to every Canadian in sight.

You want to fix all of our friends living “in our attic” as Kathleen Madigan says?  It’s a funny bit if you haven’t seen it.

I fixed the typo. For some reason that really bothers me.

I agree with him that UFO crashes are a silly notion but we have different reasons.  If, however a species conquered the massive task of interstellar travel, they wouldn't be crashing.  Not even their teenagers.

What he misses is the undeniable reality that at least a large percentage of travelers would start with self replicating probes and radio and other signals before that.  In order for them to "hide" they would have to chase down all their signals and probes before they reached us or anyone else and cover their tracks.  And if there are thousands of societies out there, they would ALL have to do the same thing every single time.  This is not realistic.

It isn't the greatest analogy but if humans decided right now as a species to hide from ants, could we pull it off?

You know the best way to hide?  By not existing in the first place.

The signals that we've sent out throughout our species existence are essentially a spot/dot/speck in our galaxy so it's not all that surprising if we haven't seen any yet especially since there's only a tiny window that we've even been looking. All that is also based on the signals being the same kind we use I mean what are the odds and advanced civilization that can cross the stars develops forms of communication that doesn't take years(at best) to go between them.

Except math

Accept math

In what way? How about you actually explain something instead of just saying "math".

Do you want me to explain how to boil water too?  It really isn't difficult but it requires you to think for a minute instead of perpetually wishing.

No if you could explain the thing you're specifically saying that'd be fine, anything else just makes it seem like you don't actually have an explanation.

Things require thinking so how about a few questions that will show you?

1. IYHO are there potentially many intelligent species strewn about our galaxy and others?

Western NY

UFO sightings in Upstate NY grew in 2019. Where were the most reports?

In 2018, there were 65 UFO sightings reported in Upstate New York, and this year it has increased to 89. According to ABC News, sightings across America nearly doubled last year. The NY Post reports that New York City’s UFO sightings tripled in 2019. Even though numbers have increased, an infographic by Satellite Internet ranked New York State as the 45th UFO hotspot in the US. To compare, neighboring state Vermont came in as the third highest.

SETI@home no longer needs your Gateway 2000 to search for aliens
SETI@Home Is Over. But the Search for Alien Life Continues
Although the public part of the worldwide experiment is coming to an end this month, the world’s greatest extraterrestrial hunt is far from finished.

Whether you're a professional astronomer or a citizen scientist, discovering just one alien planet (or 'exoplanet') is exciting, but how about 17 of them! Michelle Kunimoto, a PhD student in the University of British Columbia's Physics and Astronomy program, has done just that. Even more amazing, one of these potential alien worlds also has the potential to harbour life!

There is life all over the universe. We are not that special. Where is it? How much of it is “intelligent”? Have they been by to visit? I have no idea. But the arrogance to think that we are the only life to pop up in this giant universe is, to me, amusing.

I concede that the universe certainly contains all the ingredients for life, the “stuff” of it,  to exist outside of the earth. But I don’t think I’m arrogant for wanting to see the irrefutable evidence that it does. After all, what the universe contains most of all is empty space. There is more of nothing in it than there are things that fill it up.

First, it’s still possible the universe is finite. All we know for sure (mostly for sure) is that it’s bigger than we can observe, essentially because the farthest edges of the universe we can see don’t look like edges. The observable universe is still huge, but it has limits. That’s because we know the universe isn’t infinitely old — we know the Big Bang occurred some 13.8 billion years ago.

That means that light has had “only” 13.8 billion years to travel. That’s a lot of time, but the universe is big enough that scientists are pretty sure that there’s space outside our observable bubble, and that the universe just isn’t old enough yet for that light to have reached us.

(In a fun twist, the universe has expanded since the Big Bang, so the objects that we see emitting light 13.8 billion years ago are now some 46 billion light-years away.)

As it turns out, what appears to be empty space is just dark matter and dark energy......stuff we just can’t see, and we don’t really know what it is. That kinda goes to my point. There is so much we don’t know that I won’t pretend to actually know anything.

I obviously can’t be certain, and didn’t mean to come off like that. I’m just going to avoid acting like an old Pope and insist that we are the center of the universe. We are just one little blip in the universe, one grain of sand on the beach. The stuff we are made of exists all over. I find it hard to believe some form of life hasn’t happened elsewhere.

Good point about dark energy; that is certainly “something” so perhaps I should have said there is more “distance” between the things in the universe than anything else.

I can’t agree more that the “potential” for life to exist is certainly abundant throughout the known universe. But you know what they say about potential.

My only point is that I refuse to simply take it on faith (talk about old Popes!?) that life must exist elsewhere until that irrefutable proof Is presented. I don’t want to project in the meantime.
