I would argue that Reggie White was the single biggest FA signing by any NFL team to this point in time. A list, any list that doesn't include him is bunk (not directed at you). No, its not Miami or NY, but there is a bar scene, casinos close by and of course, the ballet. And when the team is even HALFway decent, the gameday experience and vibe in the Stadium is second to none. Players DO like that. Anyone remember TO and how blown away he was by it when he first played here? TO was the epitome of the type of athelete would raise his nose and would think Buffalo's a one horse town and once he got to see what Sunday at 1 is like in Orchard Park, he loved it. Plus..most athletes die to play in places like.....Green Bay. Ever been to Green Bay? Ive heard the bar scene consists of the local Elks Lodge and....the local Elks Lodge. And any other bars there look like....your local Elks Lodge. Plus, the weather makes Buffalo look like...Miami! A player doesn't want to come to a franchise that is sucking wind. If we have a winning season in 2011, and Nix wants to sign players we should be able to grab some free agents that fit the Bills needs. Nix drafted only Captain's of their collegiate team, something tells me character is actually important to Nix, and he isn't just going to try to sign the latest Hot Commodity "Pay me" Free Agent anyway. I'ts kind of written part truth, part tongue in cheek, but even the funny parts are based on some reality. Anyway one of the things they talked about was the effect of global warming. It predicted thta people would flock to Detroit and Buffalo to escape the heat and drought of the south. They asked him, why Green Bay? It's cold and they suck. He replied that Green Bay was building something that was going to be good. And as it turned out he was right. With FA we'll be filing holes, getting depth players, and if we're fortunate some of these FA's will turn into something more than expected. My point is if the culture keeps changing for the better we'll have a better shot at these FA's. Getting the huge paycheck is a Big deal to FA's but to many of them other factors come into play as well. Players talk and imo our own players will be giving it a little extra to talk up Buffalo. Nix's FA policy and Ralph's tight ways will still be there, but now a free agent will look at the Bills' record. You're kidding yourself if you think a FA is going to be thinking "they were really close in a lot of games." Instead, they'll just look at the team's record and say "not for me." And you know this because...Ignorance is bliss when it comes to your insight on the thought process of a professional athlete! Contrary to what a lot of people believe, the biggest contract offer doesn't always seal the deal. Those few high profile guys who sign the big bucks contract are the exception, not the rule. Most of these guys want to be part of something bigger than their wallet and perception "is" reality. With the recent swing of how this team is perceived, and the actual direction we seem to have as a franchise will play a factor in these decisions. Yes, Nix's philosophy is to build through the draft, but he's not completely avert to FA. When you got young, up and cmming guys, who played out their rookie deals becomming available, Nix is smart enough to make a play for them as well. Davis, Merriman, Edwards, Ayodele, Torbor...these signings regardless of waiver wire or actual FA support the fact that Nix will bring some guys in other than via the draft.
