Does drafting defense make sense?
Maddog69 replied to ieatcrayonz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Our offense was ranked just as badly as our defense. Both sides need help. Also, if we had the #1 offense we probably would have been a playoff team too. -
Would You Take 8-8 or 3-13 and the #1 Pick in '12?
Maddog69 replied to jwhit34's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not on the Andrew Luck bandwagon specifically. I would like to see the team get whichever QB is rated #1 in next year's draft. This whole discussion is silly. I don't think there is 1 person on this board who is not a troll that would say that on any given Sunday they are rooting for the Bills to lose. Every fan on this site wants the Bills to win every Sunday. But there are those who take the point of view, as I do, that if you are not going to be good enough to win 10-12 games and be a serious playoff contender, then it might be more beneficial to the long term success of the team to secure the highest possible draft pick so that you increase your chances of hitting on quality players in the draft. I realize that every draft pick is a risk and none are guaranteed. But if you compare it to Poker, drafting in the top 3-4 picks in the draft is like starting the hand with Pocket Kings. There's no guarantee you will win, but it's better than starting with pocket 3's. -

Wow. Very mature response. I have a few thoughts: -Going 6-10 does not build a winning culture any more that going 3-13 would. -You are discounting the difference a QB makes to a team. Look at NE. With Bledsoe, they were mediocre, when Brady stepped in, they immediately became elite with no change to the rest of the roster. -Nobody is advocating for the Bills to lose intentionally, so they are not sending a bad message to the players by telling them to try to lose -While you are correct that: "Every single team has a chance to make the playoffs and go to the Superbowl.". If you believe that every team has an equal chance of making the playoffs and going to the Superbowl then I don't think it is worth the time discussing this with you any further. -
my biggest hope for this season is for Merriman to return to his All-Pro form. As Buddy pointed out, he is only 26, so it is not completely unrealistic to think it could happen. His return to being a menacing pass rusher would give the defense an identity and it would give the team an exciting, elite level player we have not had since the Superbowl years.

You missed the point. If going 0-16 helped the team in the long run, I can live with it. Winning a few games just for the sake of being happy for one Sunday afternoon doesn't help the team down the road. -

i disagree with this for several reasons. 1.) if you don;t make the playoffs, 8-8 is really no better than 3-13 and it just means you have less chance of improving your team in the draft 2.) Screw the first pick? That just seems silly. If you guaranteed me that we get Andrew Luck if we went 0-16 next year, I would sign up for that right now. 3.) The arguments that people put about "real fans never root for their team to lose" is short sighted. Losing a few extra games in a season can make a huge difference for the amount of games the teasm wins over multiple future seasons. I look at it this way. Go back to the 2003-2004 NFL Season and subsequent draft. Would you trade one victory and drafting Lee Evans in the 1st round for a Loss and getting Roethlisberger? If you say no, then I give up. -
I am not saying they will be picking #1 overall next year, but to guarantee that they won't seems silly. They drafted 3rd this year. They have one of the toughest schedules in the league next year and they have not yet addressed several glaring needs. It would not shock me for them to be picking 1st overall. That said, it would not shock me if they drafted somewhere closer to 8-10 range either.

Toronto to make a pitch for a NFL team
Maddog69 replied to Scrappy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Regardless of whether it is the Bills or another team moving to Toronto, I wholeheartedly believe they will fail. Toronto does not suuport the Blue Jays in MLB. They don't support the Raptors of the NBA. The only team they support overwhelmingly is the Leafs, but that is because Hockey is the Candian national pastime. I think the NFL would flop in Toronto and the team would be looking to move in 7-10 years at most. -
Whitner rated by ESPN experts as #7 overall saftey in NFL
Maddog69 replied to pmak's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why would I? Just because some team is willing to sign him for big money does not mean that he is good and that I amd wrong. (See Dockery, Derrick; Walker, Langston; Walker, Javon; Hall, Deangelo, etc) teams sign bad players to big contract all the time. That doesn't make them good player, it just makes the teams look stupid. Now, if he were to go on to another team and play well, cover tight ends effectively, improve his tackling and not just try to shoulder guys to the ground, stop throwing a hit into a guy already tackled, stop celebrating tackles 20yds downfield, then yes, I will gladly come back on this board and eat crow. Even if he doesn't stop being an immature d-bag and posting on twitter like a spoiled little girl. I am not too concerned that I will have to do this, though. I think he has a better chance of getting tasered again than he does of becoming a great NFL safety worthy of a big contract. Donte is a mediocre Safety (at best). Somebody will sign him and I wish him luck. I'm just happy he won't be embarassing himself in a Bills uniform on Sunday's. -

He's highly thought of outside of our fanbase because those people don't watch him get burned by safeties or get run over by running backs. They think highly of him because they don't get to see him dance around and celebrate after making a tackle on a running after a 20yd gain. They like him because they remember him being drafted high in the draft and they see comments from him all the time. If they watched him every week like we do, I assure you they would not like him. I don't dislike him because he is not Ngata. I dislike him because he is not very good. -

He was the fourth best safety on our team, and that is only because we only had 4 on the roster. -
About the Not drafting a QB...

Maddog69 replied to Jimmy Spagnola's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Jimmy - I just have one question for you: How did Rex's Superbowl guarantee work out for you last year? -
I am not a fan of Donte. Part of it is based on his play (can't cover tight ends, consistently tries to shoulder tackle instead of wrapping the arms, embarassingly celebrates a tackle after the opposing player made a first down, etc) But the main reason I don't care for him is his big mouth. If he were a good player, I could deal with it, but he isn't. His tweets are embarassing. He acts like a teenage girl. The best Donte memory for me will be when he got tasered in Cleveland for not listening to a police officer. Then he rants and raves about how he is innocent and the truth will come out. Well, apparently the truth has yet to come out, because he plead guilty. He's a joke and I will be happy when he is officially gone.

They always have 4 guys in training camp, so Devlin seems like he'd be worth a shot. He can compete with Brown for 3d spot/practice squad. I expect that we will bring in a journeyman backup to fill the #2 spot behind Fitz (like Luke McCown or someone of that ilk)
-
My favorite Marv Levy phrase: "The best rookies are last year's rookies" We need each of the 4 guys you listed to make a big step forward.
-
Again, you missed the point. I don't expect the Bills to bring in a top tier QB to compete with Fitz. I was simply questioning the mentality that said it would be a bad thing if they did. But, to answer your question (not that I am advocating acquiring any of these players), here is a list of players who are reportedly going to be avaialble who I would consider to be roughly equal to or better than Fitz: Carson Palmer, McNabb, Hasselbeck, Kolb, Vince Young and to a much lesser degree: Bulger and Delhomme. COmpetition is a good thing. If Fitz is as good as you say, he will beat out any competition they bring in (not that I expect them to). San Diego did the same thing and drafted Vick to replace Brees. New Orleans is glad SD jumped to judgement so quickly. Maybe the next team to get Clausen will be too. I seriously doubt it, but it is possible.
-
I think you missed my point completely. I didn't advocate a specific player to bring in. I was commenting about the post from Haven Moses that talked about not wanting to bring in the QB who was a 'threat to Fitz". My statement was that I would be very happy if the Bills could find and bring in a QB who was as good as or better than Fitz because that would make the Bills better.
-
I don't understand this line of thinking. Fitz is not Peyton Manning. Why wouldn't you want the team to find a QB who is just as good as or better than Fitz? Better QB talent would make the team better. I like Fitz, but I would be thrilled if we found another good QB to compete with him. It's only a controversy to message board fans and idiot media. It's a competition to the players. It's a 'what have you done for me lately" league. If Fitz can't handle some competition, he's not who I want starting for the Bills.

Any interest in trading for Flynn or Clausen?

I agree. Gradkowski might make a good pickup -
Any interest in trading for Flynn or Clausen?
Maddog69 replied to Maddog69's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nowhere in this thread was there a love affair with Clausen. I simply asked if we had any interest in him should he become available, since Buddy and Chan said they planned to add a QB to the roster and the pickings in UFA seem pretty slim unless you want to bring back JP or Trent. -

Maddog69 replied to Maddog69's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That makes no sense. You wouldn't want Clausen because the team drafted a QB to replace him. Yet, you would like Moore, who Caolina thought so highly of, they drafted Clausen to replace him. -

Great points in the first part of your respone. That does make a lot of sense. I don't get the point you were making in the second response. -

The comparison of Dalton and Fitz makes sense. Fitz's problems are accuracy and turning the ball over late in games. Dalton has better accuracy and performed extremely well late in games. I too see Dalton as Fitz 2.0. He is a younger, more accurate version of Fitz with more upside.
