No, it's you who doesn't understand the modern NFL. In today's game a GM trades UP for his QB, just look at the actions of multiple GMs, who know a lot more than you do. Here's the reality of how teams acquire their QBs these days: In the past 5 years there have been 14 QBs drafted in the 1st round. Of those 14 QBs only 4 were drafted by a team that didn't move up in the draft to take them. Those 4 were 2 #1 overall & a #2 & #3 where the teams had no intention of trading the pick. The other 10 were all acquired via a trade up. 6 years ago the Bills did the opposite & traded down to get their QB, we all know how that went. So when the Bills traded up for Allen, they were finally joining the modern NFL where you do whatever is necessary to get the QB you want. We won't know for sure if this worked out, but I trust Beane a lot more to be a current GM than the antiquated ideas of Buddy Nix & his protégé, Doug Whaley. As a result of teams no longer waiting for a QB to fall to their spot in the draft, of the 32 teams, 24 have either a starter or soon to be starter who was a 1st rounder. You do what the 2004 NY Giants did. They started the veteran (Warner) the 1st 9 games. Then at 5-4, on a 2 game losing streak, they threw in Eli Manning, even though he wasn't ready. It worked out well & the Giants won 2 Super Bowls and Manning is still their QB in 2018. The rest of the story is Eli lost his 1st 6 games, sometimes looking totally lost in his 1st 4 starts. In the last 3 games of the season, the light came on and even though it took until the season finale for the Giants to win their 6th game, the experience was invaluable to Manning. The next year the Giants won the NFC East going 11-5. The goal is to become Super Bowl champs, not mollify the fans who don't have the patience to go to a game and see the team lose even though in a year or two that loss will have helped build a championship contender and an eventual champion.

Not from what was on the field but in 1986 the USFL had basically gone out of business & the Bills were playing their 2nd preseason game at Houston. Jim Kelly was in a box with Ralph. I was living in Suffolk County L.I. at the time and I was listening to a very static filled broadcast on WBEN. Art Schlichter was terrible on the field, but Van was talking about Kelly and the chances he'd be signing shortly with the Bills. I was starving for Bills news and I had to really strain through the static to hear WBEN.

He hasn't been any better than Allen, everyone has been better than McCarron. . He looks good on paper because of his completion %. I don't have as high an opinion of Peterman as you, that doesn't mean I hate him. He can be a good backup but I wouldn't want him as my starter. At best he can be good, Allen at best will be great. I want great, not good. I want Allen to start from day 1, learn on the job & be ready to lead a Super Bowl contender in 2019. I don't want to be KC, whose 2nd year QB is learning on the job in his sophomore year.

After the Cleveland game Tasker said on the TV broadcast he favored Peterman to start opening day. This whole week, all Tasker has been doing on his WGR show with Murphy is shill for Peterman. He's talked up Peterman more than the guy's agent would if he had a radio show.

I don't think so. I think he was too uncertain about the injury and his plan all along was to do whatever it took to draft Allen. It wasn't a well kept secret that the Bills wanted Allen. I've read that Cleveland didn't want Allen but knew the Bills did and floated rumors they were going to take Allen at #1 presumably to see if the Bills offered a king's ransom for the #1 pick. The Bills had a deal with Denver to pick Allen at 5 provided B. Chubb wasn't still on the board, it died when Cleveland passed on Chubb at 4. If Cleveland was smart (they never are) they would have drafted Allen at 4 and had the Bills by the footballs. Beane would have had to trade with Cleveland at a huge disadvantage, since Allen was his guy.

I loved seeing Gregg go nuts when Allen threw the TD to Streater.

Houston will win the game outright. Week 1 upset special. The time to beat NE is September.

JP sat his entire rookie year except for mop up duty in 4 games. His 1st game, he looked horrible. Are you saying he shouldn't have played a down? The truth is, the guys who failed never would have been any good even if they sat for a decade, like Todd Collins did in KC & Washington before having some good games 10 years after his last game as a Bill. If JP had sat for 10 years, we could have unleashed a monster on the NFL. Come to think of it, it's been close to a decade since JP left the NFL-he should be ready now for anyone willing to give him one more chance. The light finally has come on for him, he has great potential now.

Rodgers was behind a HOF QB, nobody will ever know if he came in day 1 that he wouldn't have lit it up. He didn't need 3 years to learn, circumstances kept him on the bench because Favre kept jerking GB around until they finally had enough & handed the keys to Rodgers. If Favre had retired or gotten himself traded earlier, most likely Rodgers would have been ready. Who knows if Mahomes needed last year on the bench or not, or if he'll ever be any good.

Take a look at the QB league wide depth charts. The Bills QBs have fewer starts combined than any other NFL team. Every other team has either a starter who has started many games or a backup who has. Some teams are guaranteed to keep 3. Just like the Bills, the Giants have 2 QBs drafted in 2017 & 2018, neither one is getting cut. They're keeping 3 and they have the veteran starter. Most teams that keep 2 have at least 1 veteran with a bunch of NFL starts. We need to sign a 3rd QB for the rest of preseason & if he is a veteran who looks good, McCarron goes on IR & if the 3rd preseason QB is just a body, either IR McCarron with designation to return later or keep him active if the injury is healing quickly & just inactivate him on gamedays early in the season. Any way you play it the Bills need 3 QBs since there is no seasoned veteran on the roster. BTW in 2000 NE had 4 QBs on the roster because their 6th rounder, a raw rookie named Tom Brady showed enough that they didn't want to lose him, so veteran Drew Bledsoe had 3 backups that year. Most would have called their coach nuts for having 4 QBs, instead they call him a genius.

It would be a better cap move to IR him than to let him go. If the Bills want to carry only 2 QBs, they now have a reason to put AJ on IR. This was posted before I read about the collar bone break. Now it's a legit IR with designation to return, in case another QB goes down later in the season.

We got lucky that Denver didn't want him, the Giants wanted Barkley & Cleveland had 2 picks in the top 4 and could only take 1 QB. With Indy expecting Luck back & looking to protect him, 7 was a great place to trade up to. The original deal was our 2 #1s to Denver unless Chubb was available. When Cleveland left Chubb on the board, it saved us our other #1. Of the teams that picked before #7, of the teams that didn't draft a QB, only Denver can look back in regret. John (Paxton Lynch) Elway is no QB scout. A couple of weeks ago I looked up the final mock drafts. Most of the ones I saw had the Bills trading up for Allen, but just about all before pick 7. The word was out who the Bills wanted, but nobody had the draft ammo to beat us out for Allen, or like Denver, simply didn't want him. If he plays like we're hoping Beane will be on the Wall some day in the future.
