Can you imagine being a photographer or artist during WWII?
The Avenger replied to Beerball's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Cool - I like his paintings, especially the one on deck. This past weekend with Scouts my son and I stayed overnight on the battleship USS Massachusetts - really cool. We also attended a session where we saw a movie about the history of the ship and got to talk with and ask questions of a guy who had been on the ship when it was launched in 1942 and sailed with her during her entire career - he's 92 now and it was really neat to get to talk with him. The Greatest Generation is dying out, but so many of those folks are really interesting people - the things they can tell you about are fascinating - you could listen for hours about their experiences. I hope you were able to talk with your wife's uncle - he probably had some great stories to tell about his life. -

America can't be far away from having a new cable channel - White Trash Fighting (WTF). I'm sure it existed in Idiocracy. -
Friggin' Marrone - getting cancer - dude should be fired and run out of town for embarrassing the Bills organization like that.....

Speeding ticket in southeast georgia yesterday
The Avenger replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
I've been using Waze for over a year and absolutely love it because it tells me about things like speed traps. I use it on my commute - I obviously know the route, but knowing where there is a cop is great. Also, if there's a really bad accident or a jam I get automatically rerouted to another route - very helpful. Only thing is, other people have to be using the app and reporting things or the who concept of crowd-sourced traffic reporting falls apart - if nobody is there to report a cop you could speed right past him.... -
This always reminds me of the Chris Rock routine where he talks about the difference between rich and wealthy - "Shaq is rich. The white guy who signs Shaq's check is wealthy". You have to be wealthy to buy an NFL team. Sometimes those wealthy people don't want to be the face of the franchise and that's where rich athletes/entertainers come in. Jay-Z is estimated to be worth $500 million and is the face of the Nets, but his "ownership" amounts to only $4.5 million - he's hardly an owner. If you want to own a team you need to be on the Forbes list and unless you follow corporate CEOs and people who have inherited vast family fortunes you probably won't recognize many people on that list.

Looking at what it does I'd just go with a Slingbox. My Slingbox allows me to do anything I could do if I was sitting in the same room with it - watch live TV, watch anything on my DVR - I even use it from time to time to remotely go into the DVR and set something to record if I forgot to do it before I left the house. If my DVR also had on demand I would be able to do that as well. The Genie box looks like it limits what you can do - with a Slingbox you can do everything.

The poll on the Talking Dead shows that 89% of people who answered the poll think Terminus is going to be "worse than Wodbury" - people know that place is going to be bad news.

I get enough of a thrill working the hives in my backyard - I still get plenty of honey but I don't need to climb up 200 feet on a rickety rope ladder!

My son was born with the same heart defect - he's 9 now. 30+ years ago they didn't know what to do with babies born with HLHS so they ultimately died within the first few days of life. They now have surgical techniques to essentially allow you to function with a 2 chamber heart, but the oldest people living like this are in their 30s so there is no data to show how these people fare as they get into their 40s, 50s, etc. - transplants may or may not be needed. Great to hear that this kid is playing hockey - my son's cardiologist said my son could do just about anything but should avoid contact sports like hockey/football/lax. Classy move by the Sharks!

She does have a very nice singing voice - when she was at the piano Sunday I thought she could have a singing career - IMDB said she already had 2 albums....

Kevin Kolb- Do the Bills cut him in the next 24 hours?
The Avenger replied to oman128's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not so much dumb as it was unlucky. I think we would have seen quite a bit of Kolb last year had it not been for his injury - who knows how he would have done behind a line that didn't give up that many sacks. Bad luck that he got a bad concussion and his career is over (I don't see him playing anywhere again). By contrast I see the Tavares Jackson move as dumb - you traded a pick for a guy who came here and never even dressed, then went back to his old team. You could call the Brian Brohm move as dumb as well - bring in a guy who just couldn't play at all, but at least it didn't cost the Bills any picks or players. -
Mo Cheeks serving up a classy move like that is one of my all-time favorites - good man...

If nothing else he could keep George Seifert company at the Buffalo airport - poor George has been there for years....

I love the old Twilight Zones. Some things are still relevant but I enjoy how much of it takes place in a completely different time - you see that major fears were atomic warfare and aliens - so many episodes revolve around those fears. It's also funny to see some of the gender roles/stereotypes of the old days - you'd never get away with some of that stuff today. Lastly, seeing some big stars make appearances in some of the old episodes - Robert Redford, Charles Bronson, etc. is fun - I binge on these when they run the TZ marathon every year on New Years....

There are comedic exceptions....

They never address toilet use on TV - ever notice Jack Bauer never once had to go to the can in 5 seasons of '24' even though they followed him in real time?

When Bills Fans Get Their Teeth Pulled...
The Avenger replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I love that even drugged out of his mind he still realizes the Bills might lose one of their best players and are probably still a longshot to make the playoffs...some things are just universal constants... -
Local Philly kid has a stellar basketball game
The Avenger replied to The Poojer's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Kid is probably very dedicated to the team and works hard - nice to see it pay off and for him to get a chance - he's got a mean 3 point shot! -
I'm not from there and I really don't know much about the area, but I DO know that Coke rules Atlanta and you might want to change your avatar....

I wish there were words that would make a difference, but I fear simple words are woefully insufficient..... My wife works for a hospice and I know that they take a team approach to their clients - they provide services not only to the client, but to the family - nobody goes through this alone. I'm hoping that you may be able to find similar care in your area and that there are resources who can help you as well as provide care for your wife - it's difficult to try and figure out what support resources are available to you when you're focused on your wife right now, but hopefully hospice care can help with that.

A List For Future SB Half Time Entertainment
The Avenger replied to T master's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Slayer would be awesome - make the field a huge pit for Angel of Death - somehow I don't think America is ready for that..... In all seriousness, I'm surprised the halftime show doesn't feature country music. I'm not into country, but it has a huge following - I would think a lot of fans listen to country and they they would put together a show with some of the top country acts at some point. Bruno Mars was good - not my style, but the guy has great talent and broad appeal so I think he was a good choice. -

It's missing the airport component - nobody talking about who is coming or going at the Buffalo airport - until that happens it's not a really big event....come on folks, let start posting some tail numbers so we can track flights! -
spare tires, run flats or neither
The Avenger replied to birdog1960's topic in Off the Wall Archives
The Toyota Sienna does not come with a spare if you have AWD - no room for it with the extra mechanics. Instead, they equip the van with OE run flats. I like the idea of run flats, particularly because the person driving the van 95% of the time is my wife and she usually has the kids with her - not crazy about seeing her on the side of the road with a flat - glad that in most cases she could at least drive to get some help. The downside is that the tires are super expensive and very limited - the cheapest I can find for a run flat is about $250 a tire for the size I need and the choices I have are a decent snow tire or 2 all season tires - neither of the all seasons has very good reviews and they have short tread life. In addition, not all shops can work with the run flats - we've been a couple of places that don't have the right equipment to put them on/off the rims - we've had to go to dedicated tire shops. Many Sienna owner have given up on the run flats and just switched to carrying a spare in the back - in fact, I got 3 free run flats this way when a guy had to get a new tire and decided to get rid of his run flats - $750 in free tires - sweet! -
Second half thread Bills vs. Jags
