I think Ed Oliver is better than very average, though he'll have to improve to merit the contract. I doubt this move is directly tied to finding cap space to sign Hopkins, but I don't think the fan base would blame Beane if he takes a shot and it fails. Also, I suspect Beane and McDermott need to see much better post-season success in the next year or two or they may well be out regardless, so too much caution could backfire as well.

The second one was more thorough. I'm under the impression Hopkins recently added an agent. If they are realistic about his options, it's possible the Bills could be a player at a more reasonable price point. Not sure Hopkins is there yet, but as you say, we'll have to wait and see what happens. I don't deny he is a risk, btw, but the way I see it, he gives you an outside receiver for the short and intermediate routes that still has great hands. Davis can still run the go routes as a third option. If the oline is significantly improved that will make the largest difference regardless of who is playing WR2.

This is like fan fiction for my pal @Warriorspikes51. I doubt any cap savings by extending Oliver is sufficient to match Hopkins' contract wishes which I surmise are currently inflated above where the league values him.

But it's not really an extravagant contract for the position and shortly it will be even more modest in terms of where it ranks league wide.

Hopkins has lost a step, but I think he's still a superior WR2. He catches almost everything thrown his way and is dangerous all over the field. In my view, he's a significant improvement over Davis who would thrive as what I've been calling WR3, but apparently is WR4 in our system. I understand there are a significant number of folks who are skeptical about Hopkins. I don't deny the risk. I would take it, but I don't expect Beane to sign him. Any cap savings from the Oliver extension are more likely going to be used for in-season moves or possibly to bring in a veteran edge.

I understand you rate Davis higher, that is my view. You're not alone, but I just disagree. I think if he has a superlative year Davis ends up on another team paying him big bucks. If he is inconsistent, he might be back on a team friendly contract. Fans notice key drops. They don't notice the trenches unless someone is just awful like Saffold and even then, it's not the same.

I think it can both be true that Davis has outperformed his draft status and that he is not a solid WR2. I don't think he's terrible, though imo he is terribly inconsistent. There are mitigating factors and oline insufficiencies unduly affect a player who is best at the long ball. There's no doubt, however, that if Davis had been given the extension and not Oliver, I would be unhappy with Beane on that account.

I was not an Edmunds' hater. We were better when he was in the lineup, even though he lacked instincts and seemed to guess wrong and chase a lot. Nonetheless, I'd like to see how we do with a lb that has instincts, which Dorian Williams appears to possess. In general, I think DT is a more valuable position, and I am cautiously optimistic that Oliver can still improve and make plays more consistently. As to your rhetorical question, it's evident McD and OBD think keeping Oliver is the right play. You keep asking what if Oliver doesn't improve or is beset by nagging injuries? But of course, that is begging the question. Naturally, if that happens it is not a good signing, but those who think the signing worthwhile do not presume that scenario, nor are they rationally compelled to do so. In the end, we'll all have to wait and see. I think it's rather amusing that your default view of Oliver is similar to my default view of Gabe Davis (granted, not a first round pick, but presumably an important factor on his side of the ball), so base line opinions determine how one reacts to these kind of developments.

Any fan who lived through that wretched decade carries an enduring antipathy for the Phins. Don Shula was the complete opposite to Belichick, but he was on the competition committee and I still think they got beneficial calls.

He had one outstanding game against the Chiefs that truly was responsible for the inflated expectations. If you are not consistent, you're not reliably clutch in my view, but if you want to quibble on semantics I grant he has had good games. His entire body of work is subpar for a WR2, though there are quite a few on the board who think otherwise.

That may have been the majority opinion, but before the 2022 draft there were some including myself and others @BADOLBILZ who argued for drafting a WR early (in a draft with more high end talent at the position than 2023) because Davis was inconsistent. So it just isn't true that the narrative only started after this past year.

If so, seems like that is something you could fix, but it's puzzling it hasn't happened by now.
