Hopkins released by Arizona (7/16: signed by Titans)
Dr. Who replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
Ok, so basically he's pretending to be a Carolina Panther. I don't know what more the fella can do to get McD's attention. -
Washington Commanders may have to change their name again
Dr. Who replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
There are differing accounts for the origin. Historians and linguists do not appear to agree. Since ideology enters into academic pursuits, it is difficult to discover a supposedly neutral account (which is something of an Enlightenment myth regardless.) It just does not make convincing sense that any group would name themselves after a term that would be universally held to be grotesque or negative. No one names their team the stooges, the liars, or the imbeciles. I suppose one could surmise that a bloody practice might denote fierceness and this would be flattering to a football team. Richard Noggin is a rather clever articulation of a pejorative term, so I personally don't mind the satire of his avatar picture. I believe Christ is the ultimate truth of the universe. That is either true or false. No degree of ideological conflict or differing epistemological approaches or radically incongruous metaphysical presuppositions will alter fundamental reality. It is only in the modern/postmodern ethos that folks think, largely following the logic of scientism that itself presupposes the truth of a particular epistemological and metaphysical account, that reality is malleable and open to creative "will-to-power." As I find that particular combination of rationalist nihilism incoherent and culturally ignorant, I am mostly dismissive of its claims, but it does a lot of damage to souls and corrodes what remains of the limited organic cohesion Western society has left. Of course, advocates celebrate the destruction of civilization as liberation and Enlightenment. Our technological sophistication allows, temporarily, at least, for the convergence of barbarism and advanced technology. My view is that you can only spurn nature so long before it ultimately catches up to you. -
Ross Tucker ranks NFL Coach’s, places McDermott at #22.
Dr. Who replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall
The assessment on the nature of his coaching tenure is fair. You could say the latter prognostication is true insofar as the AFC appears to be a monster conference with the bulk of franchise qbs, but I don't really concede that "this group of Bills" is automatically in a tougher position. The notion that we are not also improving or that we peaked, etc. is lazy thinking. Some much needed talent infusion along the IOL, adding Kincaid and revamping the Wr and Rb rooms, along with Dorsey in his second year at OC should contribute to a more powerful and less predictable offense that was statistically already one of the top teams. Theoretically, we might emerge as a more dangerous team to play, so that it is now harder, not easier for other AFC teams as well. -
Washington Commanders may have to change their name again

Your response is rhetorical and contemptuous. There is an anthropological phenomena across cultures involving the ritual use of red earth/pigment. It has nothing to do with skin color. Indigenous peoples used "war paint" because they anticipated the possibility of death in battle and the red coloration was understood across various ancient cultures as associated with passage to the next realm. It's actually interesting, but regardless, I wrote later in the thread that because the issue is contentious and many folk find it offensive, they ought to stick with Washington Football Team. -

I'm not going to rehash the complexities of an historical argument on this issue. For those who are offended by it, there's no information that would persuade them it is inoffensive or not intended to be in any event. Too bad they couldn't reinstate the logo and use the Washington Football Team designation. -

I was looking at the image trying to figure out what the hell that was supposed to be before I read breadsticks. I anticipate certain grain fanatics and possibly a subset of carbohydrate aficionados will preemptively begin to organize a boycott of the team. -

I'm one of those who does not think the name is derogatory. It was a classic logo. No one names a team after a group that is not embraced as valuable. Why do that? But if it is too volatile an issue, going back to Washington Football Team isn't a bad fall back. I started to like it once I got used to it.- 134 replies

Agenda driven trash talk. Dude didn't even know the Cigarette Man from X-files is a character on a show and got bent folks were wishing the character dead because of the Buffalo Bills curse. Now he's gloating that Eichel is having a good playoff; basically he's flubbing the Miss Congeniality tryout. And yes, he's fully ignorant of how stacked the Sabres are, but that's true of a lot of folks who checked out over the last decade.

Will DeAndre Hopkins be available this offseason?
Dr. Who replied to NeverOutNick's topic in The Stadium Wall
This thread is zombie apocalypse, but replace Davis with Hopkins, goodnight, this team is pick your poison. -
I normally disagree with your takes on this board, but that's a terrific story and well said.

1) I did not say or imply, I believe, that high character is somehow an alternative measuring stick to wins and losses. Just as a really nice guy who is bad at qb (J P Losman -- the name alone should have been a tell) isn't long for the NFL. But given a choice, you'd rather root for a winning team with exemplary character. I'd prefer my coach was not a little shady -- like Andy Reid, imo. (I don't want to root for a team that is routinely overlooking deep personal flaws just because a fella can play ball.) So all that goes to an element that is secondary because if you don't win and ultimately if you don't win in the playoffs, you're missing on the most fundamental criteria. I include Beane because I surmise he also has a hand in the deportment of the team, in addition to selecting players who exhibit character and intelligence above a certain threshold for the most part. Did you see the thread on Josh and Von surprising Jim Nantz and what Nantz had to say about Josh and the Bills? That stuff matters to me and I don't presume that is automatic and true for most teams in the league. (I could have said all that with much greater brevity, but you're a fella who likes prolix conversations so I figured, well, I write that way myself, so let's go.) 2) Personally, if the Bills don't make the playoffs or don't advance beyond the division round, I am making a call to Ben Johnson or some other superlative offensive coach. I think you really want your HC to be from that side of the ball in this era of football -- and you don't want to be routinely replacing your OC if you have success. I expect that Terry may give them yet another year if they crash-and-burn this season, but I would not. You ought to put yourself in the corner for invoking the bad juju of even mentioning serious injury at qb (see, I won't even write the name, didn't they teach you anything in school?) but such a disaster would doom most teams and would actually mitigate the expectations and so lower the heat should the team disappoint under those circumstances.

Now that we have players with those particular talents, it's up to the coaching staff to adapt and make use of those skill sets. -
I am more optimistic with regards to the division. I think last year the team had to overcome a truly outlandish combination of tragedies, injury, and weather related issues. It's remarkable they managed 13 wins including an 8 game win streak. There was tremendous fortitude and determination involved. Clearly, they ran out of gas by the end, regardless of questions regarding coaching. I am a skeptic on Rodgers, though perhaps he will surprise. I'm not granting the division is up for grabs in the sense that the Phins or the Jets ought to be considered equal competitors. (Funny how the Pats* are hardly in the conversation, enjoy it Chowderheads.) We are still the best team and that is mainly because Josh Allen is easily the best qb when healthy which I don't think he was for much of last season. It is a tough schedule, but everyone in our division has a tough schedule. Where it hurts is when one is jockeying for the #1 seed and we have road games against both the Bengals and the Chiefs to boot, how nice.

The more social media is integrated into folks daily life including their work, the harder it becomes to simply exempt oneself from it. Nonetheless, there's a fair amount of truth to your point.

Alright, we're not going to agree. You are going off of your personal experiences. I have suffered from dysthymia my entire adult life, so I have empathy for those who suffer from depression. Every situation has its own particular issues, so it is difficult to generalize. Therapy and pharmaceuticals don't address every problem in the world. Some situations cannot be readily helped, they just have to be endured. Certainly, the families suffer and that is a terrible tragedy.

I don't think you can count on that. What I think you can reasonably expect is that Tre will not be a liability out there. Hyde and Poyer can have savvy vet seasons that don't quite equate to peak form. Elam towards the end of the season showed promise. Von Miller coming back, the DL in general playing a more mature game with consistent pressure would help the dbs. The leap has to be on offense and the D has to hold the fort. That is possible. -
I don't know what happened with this fella, but treacherous behavior and cruelty doesn't become okay if adults are involved. So, maybe you think adults ought to just deal with it and certainly everyone has to to some extant. I think you are assenting to barbarism by doing so, but to each his own.

McD might be akin to Marvin Lewis or Marty Schottenheimer. I don't know. He's an admirable human being and he and Beane have transformed the organization into an exemplary franchise, so you root for that. It would be satisfying to see good people achieve victory at the highest level. But right now post-season success is certainly questionable. Where I see daylight for hope is that finally they made a greater commitment to address at least the IOL and I believe the FA additions and Kincaid overall make the offense potentially much more dangerous. They should certainly be better than last year with Allen presumably healthy. Dorsey has to be better, but I don't assume he won't make some leap from a first year OC. This league is offense oriented, so if things go well there, McD only has to hold the fort on D and I think he can do that. All the same, another year that ends in disappointment will cause a crisis, imo. I am praying for Sean to do well, but I would have Ben Johnson's number on speed dial just in case.
