Nonetheless, as theology is one of my specializations, I remark that Joel Osteen does not claim to be a theologian, which is sound, because he ain't that. And while I understand those who are turned off by religious evangelization, thinking it intrusive propaganda, to ask folks to utterly separate what gives meaning and coherence to their understanding from public pronouncements is both unrealistic and injust. The privatization of religion to that extreme is part of an ideology that is hostile, not neutral towards religious understanding. Such "default atheism" under the rubric of secularism often claims legal or "scientific" justification. That is specious, but if you really think folks should shut up about religion, be fair and shut up about your ideology, your political views, or anything else that happens to be your preferred center of meaning making.

I have a Korean friend who says that they have a saying that there is a direct analogy between age and the experienced speed of time's flight. When you are ten, it is as if you are driving a car at 10 mph. Summer vacation is an entire world unto itself. Christmas takes forever to arrive. When you are middle-aged, time is fairly brusque. At fifty-five, there are no idylls for dreaming and wonder. At eighty, well, it's getting rather uncomfortable to be racing along, especially when it's unclear how much road is paved ahead.
