A voice of reason. Completely agree. We need to act like Italy so that we don’t become Italy. The economy can handle a 30- or 60-day hard shutdown. Ask Bill Ackerman. It’s what the market wants. But a certain someone in DC flipped his lid yesterday when the S&P dropped below its January 2017 level. The point re: the S&P is that Americans now have had basically dead money (dividends notwithstanding) for the Trump presidency. And since Trump measures his presidency by the S&P index . . . An overreaction today was to be expected. It’s pretty sad that the test of my grandparents generation was getting on a boat and risking limb and life to defend our society. My generation is asked only to ration food for a little while, binge Netflix, and find a way to make unemployment, savings, and credit cards cover a couple of months of expenses. And we are failing.

Darryl Johnson potential...what do we think?
SectionC3 replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think the coaching staff likes this kid. Might be why they traded in a younger Shaq for an older Addison. I wonder if the idea is to let Johnson grow for another year or two while Addison is here and, over time, give Johnson a growing numbers of snaps. -
Solid point about the wise use of capital. We basically traded our first this year (which likely would have been invested in a receive who would have taken some time to reach the level of Diggs's anticipated production), one year of Bodine (who would have been cut anyway in August 2019) and one year of Teller (who also would have been cut in August 2019) for Diggs. Maybe the fourth next year gets replaced with a comp pick if Phillips leaves on a big deal (not sure how the formula works). Either way, a 1 + the equivalent of a 5 in 2020 capital for a bona fide #1 with four years of very reasonable term (at least in football dollars) who happens to play X and can beat man coverage ... capital well spent. Great job by Beane not only yesterday, but last August in getting something for guys who he was going to cut and using that value to sweeten the pot to get a #1 receiver.

Left unsaid is the term on the agreement. Perhaps they'll do $30M x 1. But will they go three years? Or guarantee three years? I suspect that at least the Raiders will do both. The bet here is that Brady gets three years, fully guaranteed, at more than $33.3M per season, from somebody. In other words, Kirk Cousins at a higher annual salary.

Greg Roman offenses are like race horses. They run hard. But once they get passed they don’t come back. and Jackson is a mediocre passer.

I don’t care so much about the TD being taken away, but I dislike the 15 flag on Ford even more now. Common sense prevailed on the kickoff at the start of the second half, and it should have on that play, too. I was sold on Josh before the game, and I’m even more sold on him now. The kid could have played better, but he always was going to take time given his relative inexperience in college. I wish we went for the throat in the second half. But maybe that’s not on Daboll. And, in any event, if one of the three blockers on the QB sweep on which Allen was creamed in overtime picks up the DB, he’s going for 10 yards and we’re going to win the game. Finally, I wondered whether we might be a major regression candidate for next year. Perhaps we are. But we lost nearly as many close games as we won, which bodes well for us. And the offense has major upside if the right tweaks are made in the offseason. I am much more optimistic about next year than I was on Saturday, and I can’t wait for training camp.

Cowboys hire Mike McCarthy as Head Coach
SectionC3 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This may increase the possibility of Daboll to the Browns. Or it may indicate that the Browns were interested in McCarthy, got scooped by the Cowboys, and remain interested in someone with prior head coaching experience and a presence to take control of that locker room. -
Late Ford personal foul call a joke
SectionC3 replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Very true. But so is it a rule that a ballcarrier can't give him self up by sticking his arms out like a ski jumper and flipping the ball to the ref. Common sense -- not the letter of the law -- prevailed there, and it should have on the Ford call, too. -
I think this is an interesting question and it's one that I pondered this morning. I think Daboll has done great work with Allen -- think about where we were with him the last time we played the Texans. But we were far too conservative with the lead yesterday. The thing I keep coming back to is trusting Allen with the ball. I think the kid is very good now, and is going to be outstanding. It will take longer for him to develop coming from a community and small college than it might for someone who played more snaps at a major college program. But the ball security issue is a major problem. He's far too casual with the football, and I wonder if some of the conservatism is traceable to a broader view of the game from the coaching staff, namely, minimize risk and take points where they can be had given our above-average defense. If the kid can just get a little more trustworthy with the ball (e.g., not dropping it once a game, and limiting the risky throws), we are really going to be on to something. He has everything else, and we have the right leadership in place and the right circumstances (cap space, picks, youth, etc.) heading into 2020.

What Changes will be made this Offseason?
SectionC3 replied to wppete's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think we’re set at TE. Doubt they pay an edge more than the guys who have put the work in for years in Jerry and Shaq. You have a point about WR. -
What Changes will be made this Offseason?

Need to upgrade corner #2. New LG. New RB2. New RT if ford kicks over to LG. Might be heresy, but I think the safeties weren’t all that great down the stretch. They both stay, but I’d like better tackling there. -

What was the Bill's Play-of-the-Decade?
SectionC3 replied to cage's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think I about Jalen hurts for that role. It might work for him. -
What was the Bill's Play-of-the-Decade?
SectionC3 replied to cage's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with both of these. If it's a play, it's obviously the 4th and 12. If it's a Bills play, then I'm with you on the Allen sneak. It's the symbolism of what Allen did; it was the play of that game, and that was the game where we seem to have shucked off the mediocrity of most of the past two decades. -
It’s not that we haven’t tried screens. It’s that they don’t work. (Think the Spain holding call, I believe it was against Pittsburgh but could be wrong on that.) Allen played two series against the Jets, and his throws were on things that he/the offense need to work on. (Screen left to Gore; looked like WR screen right - I sit on the other side of the stadium, so not completely sure what the design was there; and deep shot to Williams). There’s no sense in running something that isn’t going to work. On the identity point, if you prefer that we line up 3 x 1 all of the time and attempt to dictate play to every opponent, we simply disagree. By way of example, following the Ravens experience, we went heavy to avoid having Dupree, Watt, and company wreck the Steelers game. It worked. 3 x 1 against the Ravens wasn’t so effective. On the Gore point, if memory serves Singletary has received the vast majority of the carries during the second half of the season and after he regained his health. Gore’s carries tend to come when we’re trying to control the game on the ground, and his skill set does not lend itself to running outside the tackles frequently. Think the first play in the “three run” goal line series against Pittsburgh where he was swallowed up. Or think of the screen that had a bit of potential against the Jets that amounted to only five or so yards. Gore gets the ball because he doesn’t fumble, and if he’s getting the ball he’s running between the tackles. Given Allen’s progress, I desperately want continuity next year. Even if Daboll goes, I’d like same terminology, same philosophy, and similar group back. O’Shea seems to make sense if Daboll leaves, or an in house candidate that McDermott trusts.
-
sigh. personnel is not a great fit for the screen game. guards are slow and receivers are small. But we should run it anyways so people can complain about how we run too many ineffective screens. Want to beat aggressive blitzes? Have John brown win a slant against Baltimore. Yes, Allen generally has to be better in that respect, but it’s not all on him or daboll. Sometimes it’s personnel.
-
I’m with you there. John brown throwing the ball twice isn’t all that conservative to me. Throwing the ball 18 times in a row (or whatever it was) to start the season against the Jets also is not conservative to me. Maybe the NE game is a fair criticism - too many runs in first down - but the entirety of the season otherwise has been pretty modern and progressive.
