McDermott on very interesting NFL Films video on goal line fades
DrMaxPower replied to Roundybout's topic in The Stadium Wall
The fade has been a bad play since Calvin Johnson hung up his cleats. Unless you have a total freak show it's a waste. -
People just spew BS sometimes... We're playing more man than ever. We are blitzing more than ever. We are running more 4-3 than ever. But sure, they haven't made any adjustments in years. What nonsense.

Beyond the matchup/injury stuff, I think it's mostly the cyclical nature of the game and trying to be ahead of the curve. We were at the forefront of the base nickle as teams started throwing the ball all over the place. Now, offenses are reacting by going bigger and running more. Lots of teams running 2 TE with regularity and putting more focus on the ground. This is the counter.

- I saw this game going 1 of 2 ways. Dolphins brings their 'A' game to save their season or their 'D' game if they've quit on their coach. Kudos to McDaniel, it was the former. They played really well for the most part. - I think the offense and defense were opposites last night. Defense was generally good play calling with poor execution and the offense had some poor play calling with very good execution. - On defense, I liked the way we mixed things up. They really had to work for the yards. 12 play 7 minute drives to cover 45 yards. Obviously the 3rd downs were a major disappointment. I put most of them on execution. Horrible tackling last night and some really bad angles. Did you guys forget Hill is pretty fast? - On offense, I did not like the the play calling in the passing game. Once again, very little play action. We should kill teams with it but don't use it. At this point, I wonder if Josh doesn't like taking his eyes off the defense. I believe the stat I read was 1 pass play over 10 yards. That's ridiculous. Of course everything is going to get compressed and more difficult if they can squat and play downhill on everything. - Really piss-poor night for ST. Missed FG, awful coverage and below average on returns. - After losing to the Chiefs in the playoffs, 1 of the major talking points was about how the Chiefs offense was showing stuff they didn't do all season. 'Why don't we do that????' was a pretty common refrain. I'm hoping this is part of the reason for the lack of diversity in the passing game. Our short, timing passing and screen games have generally been a challenge with Josh. Perhaps we are drilling areas in need of improvement and/or 'saving' stuff until needed. Maybe wishful thinking... - It's not always going to be a masterpiece and we need to remember that we are usually going to get a teams best punch. We are the measuring stick. The Pats and Chiefs made their name grinding out these kind of wins. There's definitely still work to do but doing at 3-0 is all I need.

Do you think teams don't go into the draft with holes in their roster? Team usually go into the draft with multiple holes and many potential positions to target round 1. Remember, this was a period when many of the pundits were taking about it being the best roster in the league. The unusual thing was that CB was the only obvious hole. It made their likely targets for round 1 obvious and allowed KC to jump them.

Holy crap, I'm finally coming to Buffalo! 53 years in the making
DrMaxPower replied to Hellcamino's topic in The Stadium Wall
This post hits home! Never been anywhere near Buffalo/WNY but had to make a pilgrimage before they close the barn. As an 8 year old watching the 1990 Superbowl, I had to pick a team to cheer for. Apparently I'm a glutton for punishment because I stuck with them ever since. The only kid in school with a Bills hat when everyone else was wearing Niners or Cowboys or Lolphins. Taking my dad to celebrate his 75th birthday and bringing my 8 year old son. I've been bookmarking posts for a few months on where to eat and what to do. Looking forward to making some memories! -
The only thing I'm going to criticize Brady for is his lack of play action usage. With the way we run and Josh's ability to drive the ball, we should be killing teams with play action. Otherwise, complaints about a team that scores more, has higher TOP and turns it over less than pretty much anyone is unreasonable. People constantly whine about the lack of talent on offense and then turn around and criticize the guy who is turning that into possibly the best offense in the league. It can't be both folks. If your preferred offense involves throwing it all over the place 40 times/game, get over it. They are trying to win games, not please some esoteric vision you have of what a 'fun' offense looks like.
-
This is really my only criticism of Brady right now. The last stats I saw had us very low in PA usage. With how much/well we run, it really should be a bigger piece of the pie. It would give Josh lots of clean, easy throws. I get that the current offense may not be everyone's cup of tea as far as style or entertainment value but you can't argue with the results. Lots of points and TOP, very few TOs.
-
The Patriots were always a significant outlier in this area during their run too. This is a coaching stat. In general, turnovers are fairly variable but the outliers are that for a reason.
-
Not sure how they are coming up with their information for the graphic... the guys listed are about half a billion short.
-
To me, it's about probabilities and bust rate. The highest we could reasonably trade would be fringe top 10. There's no sure things there. If we trade 3 picks for 1 bust it'll really hurt. I also think you have better odds of finding an elite player with 3 bites in the top 60 than 1 bite in the top 13 or whatever.

Return of the Tre! (Tre White signs with the Bills)
DrMaxPower replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall
He may not be. He had a slow recovery on the knee, maybe the same is true on the Achilles. Worth a shot. My guess is the 'up to' is doing a lot of heavy lifting. -

I like the the move. If he can be 80% of what he was we've got a decent cb room pre-draft. Hopefully now 2 years out from achilles he's closer to his old self. Took him 2 years to get over the knee. Worried he's cooked though. Didn't see a lot last year but what I did wasn't good. Worth the risk. -
You want a monster run stuffing DT? I got you a monster DT
DrMaxPower replied to DJB's topic in The Stadium Wall
There are very good reasons there are zero players anywhere near this big in the league. It isn't because there aren't any. -
They both look totally out of their depth but I think ownership is a contributing factor. They've should have been rebuilding but were stuck trying to be competitive to save their jobs.
-
I agree but that makes signing 2 vet qbs all the more wierd. Either they have no plan or can't get anyone to take their money. Tanking for Manning doesn't work for Schoen or Daboll who will be out on their a$$ with another rough year.
-
This is the wrong year to try and trade a RB. I read Daniel Jeremiah say it's the best RB class he can remember. You'll be able to pluck very good players in the 4th and 5th rd. Nobody is giving up a pick for the privilege of paying him 15 per. You'll be able to draft people 90% as good for 5% of the cost. Most likely scenario is he plays out the season and either moves on or is tagged.
-
If Pegula will sign the checks. It's tiresome to listen to people endlessly blow Roseman. He's an excellent GM but it doesn't take a genius to add 4 void years to every deal. It takes an owner willing to spend more than the others. Their success is about Lurie as much as it is Roseman.
-
It's still very good. I played oline for 12 years. I can tell you that in some ways it's harder to block for somebody who is constantly moving. What may be a safe redirection angle on 1 play puts your man in his lap the next. There are probably as many instances of Josh creating his own pressure with happy feet in clean pockets as there are times he bails them out making free rushers miss.
-
For YEARS, the big complaint was the oline. 'Build a dominant line', 'Keep Josh upright', 'Fix the line and everything takes care of itself'. They did. We are paying 2 blue chip tackles. We just wrapped a season in which we probably had the best, most consistent offense in the league. And yet the 'Josh does it with no help, we need to invest in the offense, get him weapons' narrative thrives. I don't get it.

This account has been outed many times as a no-source fraud that just makes crap up for engagement. FYI

Beane's comments made it sound like they were already not on the same page with Benford on value. This pretty much ends any likelihood of an extension IMO. They'll draft a corner early and go from there. If he gives them confidence over the course of the season he can be a CB1 I think they'll move Benford. If not, they'll tag him and reconsider after another year. A couple months ago Benford was my 1st priority to resign. Then he took back to back concussions to close the season with the 2nd one of the scary variety. Add that to him apparently chasing top dollar and I think he's now a guy you let someone else pay if you have a reasonable replacement.
-
I would have thought Benford was 1st priority of the potential extensions. Now I'm wondering if the 2nd concussion has scared them off. I wouldn't be shocked to see them wait and see how the season goes and revisit half way through.

DK Metcalf requests trade to a contender
DrMaxPower replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
If we can get him at a compensation level ($ and draft picks) that doesn't compromise fixing the defense, great. He'd fill the biggest question mark on O. That said, I'll never understand this idea that we need to prioritize resources to the offense. It's like a person over-complicating weight gain/loss. Calories in VS calories out. Points for VS points against. It's exponentially more difficult for a top 2 offense to add 5 ppg than a bottom 10 defence to reduce 5 ppg. All the complaints about previous defense investment are the very definition of sunk cost fallacy and irrelevant. It's still the area that most needs attention and the area most likely to hold us back. -
Another one - Trey Hendrickson asks for a trade from Cincy
DrMaxPower replied to Roundybout's topic in The Stadium Wall
This is the one to target if we want an end. Garrett is going to come with the 'offer they can't refuse' price as they don't want to move him in the 1st place. Guys like Bosa and Mack are a big risk. Hendrickson is about as much a sure thing as you're going to get.
