They typically participate in camp and preseason, but then go on the suspension list once the regular season begins. They do not count against the 53 man roster. The interesting thing is that the players are barred from practice and the team facilities for the 1st half of the suspension. After that they can return to practice to get ready to return to the field. The players aren't paid during the suspension their salary, but I'm not sure the full affects on the salary cap. https://www.profootballnetwork.com/how-do-nfl-suspensions-work/#:~:text=A first-time offender will, the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Is there an NFL team with a weaker WR group than the Bills?
GASabresIUFan replied to Pete's topic in The Stadium Wall
The truth about all these WR rooms is that you don't know what you have until the season begins play. Injuries, rookie performance, offensive usage etc... all factor into whether a WR room works or doesn't. You also have to factor in the RBs and TEs into a full passing attack. Having good RBs and TEs lessens the need for great WRs. When I look at the Bills, I see a diversified group of pass catchers. I see 3 RBs that can catch and be utilized in different formations. I see two TEs who can catch and are factors in the passing game. Would anyone really be surprised if we had as many as 4 guys with 700+ receiving yards between our WRs and TEs? My biggest issue with the WR room is the lack of a consistent deep threat. Our longest pass plays last season by Josh to a WR were a 64 yarder to Coleman, and a 52 yarder to Shakir, our slot receiver. Davis had a 63 yard catch as well. If my memory serves all three of these plays had significant YAC. What stood out to me about Josh's season last year was the lack of downfield plays. That was a symptom of the offense, but I think it hurt the Bills at various points last season. Last season Josh had his lowest air yards on his throws for his career. It was down to 7.9 yards per attempt and only 3.6 yards per completion. The good news was our receivers, TEs and RBs gained 2005 yards after the catch last season. A career high for Josh of 6.5 YAC. The funny thing is that all these short throws didn't make Josh more accurate. His accuracy rate was 74.8% which is firmly in the middle of his career rates of 73.2 to 79.1. My take from all this is that the Bills still need to allow everyone to eat, but I'd like to see more explosive plays from the offense. To do that we need a fast deep threat. I wish we had drafted one, but I'd be satisfied with finding someone with that skill set in free agency (Moore?). -

So your saying that there are so many factors, but bad QB play isn't one of them? Give me a break. If you don't think that inaccurate throwing by QB lowers WR stats, then you haven't been watching football. The title of this thread is the Bills group is the worst in the NFL and now your telling me that there are as many as 6 worse. Thanks for proving my point. -

Palmer had much better QB play with Herbert then Moore ever had in NY or Cleve. -
Safety down leads 61 to 54 over WR.

Milano played nearly 90% of D snaps in the playoffs and looked just fine. He had 17 tackles. He also played 5 of 6 games to end of the season (he was inactive against NE in the first game and was one of the starters who didn't play in NE game 2. Milano Bernard and Williams are significantly better players and depth over Rapp, Bishop, Hamlin and Forrest. I understand the worry about the depth after Williams, but management has more faith in Andressen and Ulofosahio (and maybe Spector) than the fans do; otherwise they'd have drafted someone.
-
Isn't that the point of this thread. The top 4 players at WR are better and more proven players than their counterparts at safety.
-
really? Let's take it player by player Shakir > Rapp - Shakir was 2nd in the NFL in TAC while Rapp is a marginal NFL starter Coleman > Bishop - Both were 2nd rd picks last year and neither wowed due to injuries and other issues. Coleman had 12 starts to Bishops 4. Palmer > Forrest - Palmer has been a part time starter for 4 years starting 29 games, Hamlin has 27 starts over 4 years, but the mkt values Palmer at 4.3 mill for 2025 and Hamlin at 1.4. Hamlin lost his starting gig to Bishop late in the year. Samuel > Forrest - Both suffered through injury plagued campaigns last year but Samuel started 2 games to Forrest's 1 and Samuel has 60 starts over 8 years while Forrest has 17 over 4 years. Lewis > Shenault - Both are primarily special team players, but Lewis gets reps on defense and Shenault's offensive value is near zero at this point. I can see neither player making the Bills in 2025.

Elijah Moore Visiting the Bills today (Update: Signed!)
GASabresIUFan replied to bills742's topic in The Stadium Wall
I was hoping he’d be on the radar this offseason. He is a solid 600 yards a season guy who has never played with a decent QB in his 4 NFL seasons with Cleveland and the NYJ. He was a high 2nd round pick who ran 4.35 40 at his pro day. He’d be a reasonable addition if they’ll utilize him as the deep option and unlike the kids in the draft he has 4 years experience. -
What? Yes Milano is on the downside of his career but Williams and Bernard aren’t. I agree the Spector needs to go, but we as fans don’t really know what we have or don’t have in Andreassen and Ulofoshio. I will admit that I thought they grab at least one LB in the draft, but me can argue the Hoecht can play LB once he returns from suspension. Unlike Safety, the LB group has 3 good players as mentioned above. Who is the good player at Safety? There isn’t one.

What are people going to say when 2 of Shakir, Palmer, Kincaid and Coleman go over 1000 next season? Or if all 4 have over 800 yards next season? -

Bills 5th Round Pick (#2) : Jackson Hawes - TE - Georgia Tech
GASabresIUFan replied to Simon's topic in The Stadium Wall
Have you ever watched Hawes play in person or even on TV? Didn’t think so! I have. Yes the kid is a good blocker, but is a better pass catcher than given credit for. Tech’s offense tends to limit stats and opportunities. Kincaid is an athletic pass catching TE. Knox can catch but is mostly a blocker at this point and was never an athletic pass catching TE. -
Why are there two Safety slots in the poll? When Rapp is the best player in a position group that is your weakest position. The whole defense is in transition. As many as 12 new players were added in the draft and free agency, headlined by Bosa, White, the two suspended DL, Hairston, Sanders and Jackson. Now add Carter, Ulofoshio (sp?), Solomon, Andreessen and Bishop and Beane has basically retooled nearly the entire defense. Unless Hancock can become a starter, Beane has more work to do at Safety.

Is there an NFL team with a weaker WR group than the Bills?
GASabresIUFan replied to Pete's topic in The Stadium Wall
While most of this is true, the one area that we could have helped ourselves in the draft was a deep threat WR and there was plenty of those available to draft in the 4th rd. In fact Beane & Co interviewed Thornton, Royals, Horton, and Smith as well as another 10 receivers leading up to the draft. Getting Prather who has decent, but not great speed in the 7th round was a complete let down and in a need based draft, not adding one of the speed guys they interviewed seems like a missed opportunity. -
Is there an NFL team with a weaker WR group than the Bills?
GASabresIUFan replied to Pete's topic in The Stadium Wall
Haven't we had this topic before? Anyway we really won't know until we see how Palmer fits with Josh and in Brady's offense and well (or if) Coleman improves in year 2. I'm also going to suggest that if Samuel stays healthy in camp, you could see much more production out of him in 2025. So is this the worst WR group in the NFL. I'm not sure, but there is upside. I still would have like to see Beane draft someone like Royals, Thornton, Felton, or Arian Smith. -
I don't think this is a stupid theory at all. We have seen many QBs throughout NFL history with cannons for arms who had no idea where the bomb was actually going (see Jeff George). We have certainly seen Josh miss open receivers deep over the years. I'm going to add another factor. What if the issue is less Josh and more the crazy wind conditions in Highmark Stadium? For decades we have seen kickers and punters struggle with the wind conditions in Buffalo. Is a 40 yard throw in the air any less likely to be affected by the wind than a 40 yard punt or 50 yard FG?

The Bills added 3 FAs and 3 draftees to our returning secondary The allocation looks something like this CB1 Benford, CB2 White (FA signing), Slot Johnson Backups - Strong (draftee), Ingram, Jackson (FA signee), Hairston (rookie draftee), Codrington (KR) Safety 1 Rapp, Safety 2 Bishop Backups - Forrest (FA signee), Hamlin, Cam Lewis and Hancock (Rookie Draftee) Camp Battles CB2 - White vs Hairston Backups - Ingram, Strong, Jackson Starting safety spots are all in play - Rapp and Hamlin are the returning starters and unless Rapp get hurt he'll keep his job as Beane likes his leadership. The other starting job is a 3 way battle between Forrest, Hamlin, and Bishop. The next battle is draftee Hancock vs Lewis for the CB/S depth and special teams role. If I had to guess Hairston beats White for the CB2 job, but with White taking regular snaps depending on opponent and situation. I also think we'll only keep two of Ingram, Strong or Jackson. Right now I project Jackson as the loser in that competition. I also see Bishop winning the starting safety job, but Forrest giving him a run for his money. One the reason I started this thread is I think special teams will play a huge factor on who wins some of the depth secondary jobs. Last season Gilliam, Morris, Ingram and Lewis played the most special teams snap. Morris is already gone. The question becomes if the rookies like Hancock and Strong beat out Lewis and Ingram for jobs, then 3/4 of our top special teamers will be gone. Ingram's special teams skills are the reason he'll ultimately beat out Jackson for the final CB job. However, I'm taking the opposite position on Hancock vs Lewis. Assuming Hancock has a camp, I can see him nudging out Lewis. The Bills don't view Lewis as anything more than a special teamer and injury fill in. With Hamlin, Rapp and Forrest on one year deals, I think management will want Hancock on the active roster to develop into a potential starter in 2026. That said, Hancock will have to show up on special teams in pre-season to make Beane comfortable with cutting Lewis. Assuming both Strong and Hancock make the team, Beane and McD will expect them to help on special teams. Andreessen, the UDFA LB, played the 5th most special teams snaps last season, Solomon was 6th and Bishop 7th.
