Why doesn't McDermott call the Defensive plays full time??
JohnNord replied to Special K's topic in The Stadium Wall
I can guarantee the idea has crossed his mind and if things don’t get better, it’s something that might happen. McDermott prefers to be the “CEO” of the team, as most coaches do. Taking control from Babich is akin to benching your rookie/young QB. Once you’ve de-committed it’s usually the beginning of the end. i definitely think McDermott believes in Babich and doesn’t him to fail. Babich has been groomed for this role early in his career so he’s kind of like McDermott’s protege, just as McDermott was Jim Johnson’s protege in Philly. The two have been together for almost a decade and he has a relationship with Babich Sr. I think he also knows he’s been hurt by injury/suspension. -
Roster Moves Being Made (Could Be Nothing)
JohnNord replied to Dick_Cheney's topic in The Stadium Wall
There’s one current roster spot. It will be interesting if they activate Hairston at the end of next week. -
brother Bill is annoying…but I hated those glasses the first time I saw them.

Roster Support over the past three years (Beane)
JohnNord replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not every draft pick that you make is going to be a starter - especially when you get to the Day 3 picks. If those guys are productive depth players you can argue it’s a decent pick. But the trends that you identified here are valid. Beane’s just not getting enough return on his “premium” draft picks. It goes back to his failure at struggling to add high end talent to surround Josh -
If you’re looking at Weeks 1-4, I’d agree. Although there were times the offense was stagnant for stretches, in the end they put up 30+ with few turnovers But last Sunday the offense was a big reason why the lost. We’ll see what happened next Monday

Not passing the eye test? I don’t know, you could say that about just about every team this season. To your point, I think the problem isn’t that they don’t have a true WR1 - it’s that the overall talent at WR isn’t higher. Shakir is a nice slot WR - I’d say he’s toward of the middle of the league. But the rest - Coleman, Samuel, and Palmer are likely WR3’s and WR4’s on most teams. The other problem is that there’s not a lot of versatility and too much redundancy in skill sets. Shakir is easily their best slot WR but he doesn’t play outside much. Samuel and Moore are almost identical in their skill sets. Keon is the 50/50 guy and could be utilized better in the slot, but because of the duplicate skill sets he always plays outside where he fails to separate and get down the field. the you have Palmer who also plays exclusively on the outside. He can separate but isn’t the burner that stretches the field. All in all I don’t have a problem with the mentality. In fact, I think a lot of Josh’s INTs in the past came from balls forced to Gabe Davis and Diggs. I like the idea of unselfish play at WR but I think they failed to raise the talent level

Diggs coming back to Highmark Sunday Night
JohnNord replied to PoundingDog's topic in The Stadium Wall
They don’t need to double cover him. Diggs doesn’t have any explosiveness anymore and mainly runs short routes. The Tight Ends will be more dangerous that Diggs -
The Ray Davis-backup running back discussion
JohnNord replied to TBBills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don’t think either have looked great this season. From what I can recall however, it seems like most of their rushing attempts were in obvious running situations and there was a whole lot of daylight. I remember earlier in the season Ty Johnson dropped a sure TD on the route he ran to success in Detroit. Its still early though and there’s time to turn things around for them -
Bills do like Grable and he’s just returning from a concussion. Given the lack of available options at RT around the league, it makes you wonder if they’d consider trading RVD. Then again, he has performed well whenever Brown has missed time

I’d argue there’s a big difference between Dorsey’s offense in 2023 and Babich’s defense in 2025. Dorsey’s offense has been struggling to score 20 points over a stretch of about 6 weeks. McDermott wants “balance” on offense and Dorsey kept forcing passing concepts which routinely didn’t work. Plus Josh was turning the ball over. Babich is running a defense that’s a variation of what McDermott ran in 2023. It’s clear they are taking more chances with man coverage and blitzing etc. In 4 games the results have been mixed. Also McDermott knows his defense. The players they were relying on to rush the passer largely haven’t besides Bosa. So so think Babich gets more time but yes, if things don’t change and they lose a few games, I can see McDermott taking over the play calling reigns

It was very weird. It almost looked like he was saying “YES!” to imply that he was happy the season was over. So weird This is true. From all reports he’s not really much of a CEO as head coach. He basically runs the offense but has always given his defensive coordinator complete autonomy with little to no input.

If Only They Could Tackle..It's Not Just the Coaching
JohnNord replied to Rich Stadium Original's topic in The Stadium Wall
This is why I laugh at the fans who call for McDermott’s head any time the defense falters. There were multiple times where the defense was in a good position today and they just failed to make a tackle. that’s on the players and not coaching. How it gets better - I’m not sure Losing Ed Oliver is like playing without your top defensive player. I think Oliver, Hoecht and Ogunjobi are going to help get the Javon Soloman’s and Jordan Phillips off the field. That should’ve a nice upgrade. -
9/28/2025 Bills vs Saints post game thread
JohnNord replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
It’s the whole distributive property of NFL football. some fans think - well the Saints are bad and they Bills could only win by 12. The Patriots scored 40+ to beat the Panthers who are also bad. So that means the Patriots will handily beat the Bills, right? doesn’t work like that You don’t want to peak in Week 4. Ask the 2021 Buffalo Bills -

JohnNord replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
It’s a week to week league and it’s only week 4. Will a “statement game” in week 4 matter much in Week 18? We’ve seen many times where it didn’t -

I didn’t love the call in that situation -
I think the fist TO resulted in a stop on 3rd down too

That’s a fair point. I think they didn’t want to change the playbook for him. I’m guessing it’s a play he can run, just no one expected him to get tripped like that. -
9/28/2025 Bills vs Saints post game thread
JohnNord replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
People need to chill out. Much like Miami, I think the Bills made this game closer than it needed to be thanks to uncomplimentary football…and yet the Bills won by 12 points and scored 30+ again. You can find fault in both the offense and defense. The drive start for New Orleans was ridiculous in the first half and the defense surrendered 3 points…that’s good. But they consistently gave up big yardage on the ground and allowed NO to keep drives alive which chewed up time. Offense looked unstoppable at times but also stalled out for like 3 or 4 drives in a row. Plus they botched a 4th and inches play which looked horrendous until you realized the new RT accidentally tripped on his pull. STILL…in the end they put up 31 points. So you can find blame on both sides of the ball. It’s a good thing the Super Bowl isn’t played during Week 5! -
The most disappointing part of this game was the pass rush. To anyone that’s going to blame Miami’s quick passing attack - Tua’s average time to throw was 2.74 seconds - the most since 2023. His career is 2.43 seconds. The Bills just weren’t getting home. They actually hit Tua just one time the entire game. Hoecht and Ogunjobi will help displace Javon Solomon and TJ Sanders respectively. That should be an improvement in both run and pass rush. Walker will rotate and TJ Sanders will sit the bench with Landon Jackson.

JT O'Sullivan QB School - Josh Allen vs The Fins
JohnNord replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall
Give us a summary of what he says -
right… it has nothing to do with McDermott’s scheme. He plays that far off because he has to
-
TJ Sanders is the lowest defensive tackle at his position. I don’t think he played a very good game. Also, Tua’s time in the pocket before a throw was 2.74 seconds. His most since last season.

Up: 1. Cook 2. Kincaid 3. Elijah Moore Down: 1. Tre 2. Groot 3. TJ Sanders First off the pass rush sucked all night. They didn’t get close to an immobile QB against a bad offensive line. Ironically they performed better against a mobile QB and a decent OL the week before. I’m hoping the potential is there and I do think Ed Oliver will help. Tre White was horrible. Babich made the perfect call with a corner blitz on Tua. Tre had him dead to rights and just whiffed. Plus whenever Tua needed a completion he looked to Waddle in 1V1 coverage against Tre. At this point, I think they look to work in Strong and eventually Harrison. TJ Sanders looks like a mix between Boogie Basham and DeWayne Carter. That’s not good. He might as well be the invisible man He also missed a sack on Tua on 3rd down which would have given Buffalo the ball back before the half. That could have changed the game. Tre didn’t play well
