We loaded the WR room with mediocrity over free agency so we wouldn’t have to reach for mediocrity in the draft. Somehow, that seems like a well thought out plan.

The wideout crop in this year’s draft is weak overall. That is why we hit the bin big time in free agency. There was no need to reach for mediocrity when we could get the mediocrity during free agency and use the draft for high quality. Free agency where the draft is weak. Draft the year’s strong positions (we got a top 3 overall DLineman at #9. Sick). Who cares that we missed DK?

Good point. Here is one for you to consider: Butler isn’t Brown. Nor is he Colston or Thielen. Just because it has happened in the past doesn’t mean it will happen in the future when every variable has been changed. Everything is different. It can’t be compared, only used as data for this year, this team, this pick. Otherwise, every team would be picking a quarterback at 199.

I really don’t understand this aversion to trading up. The whole “We lose draft picks” idea, to me, is a faulty concept. At at the beginning of training camp, every team has 90 players. By trading up, a higher percentage of those 90 players are higher draft picks (obvious, but needs to be said). If we keep or trade back, we don’t get more than the 90 players to start. We just end up with a less talented group of 90 football players to choose from. When the quantity is limited (capped at 90 to start, 53 on the roster, 46 active, 11 on the field) quality should be the goal.

I guess we should change the motto to “BPA unless it’s a TE in the first round because they are never worth that high of a pick.” So stated the OP. And that stance is ludicrous.

If the drop off in talent from about #8 to #32 is negligible, why would a team want to give up so much capital to move up when the return in player quality isn’t there? Trade this year’s first and give up next year’s first for whom? Who would they take. One of the 10 similarly graded D linemen? A cornerback? A quarterback who just might have an Andy D type career at best? Saying “Trade Back” is awesome. Finding someone who will pay a price to get to #9 is unlikely.

What do past drafts have to do with anything? If past drafts were the gold standard for player evaluation, teams would be clamoring to grab the next most successful quarterback of all time at pick number 199. Last year’s draft was last year. Past drafts are in the past. This year’s players are this year’s players.

My biggest argument FOR drafting a tight end in the first round was aptly stared by an earlier poster: The NFL is becoming a passing league. Having that big, fast tight end that DBs can’t take down one on one and LBs can’t run with is a vital aspect of today’s short yard and red zone offense. Vital enough to spend a first round pick on. As as far as taking a few years to learn the position, so what? For the most part, only running backs are plug-and-play. And their importance is diminishing. And does anybody really believe that the high quality tight ends who have worked through the learning curve and are now hitting on all cylinders would ever be allowed to hit the open market? Would Philly really let Ertz walk? And would you be willing to pay the price to get him? Especially when TJ will probably be better than him? in this draft, I can easily see three tight ends being taken in the first round. I can also see a tight end being taken before any wideouts are taken. Welcome to the new NFL. And for the record, I would be happy with 5 or so different guys at 9. TJ is one of them. DK, not so much, but I would live with it.

So the thesis of this post is “Tight Ends aren’t worth a first round pick because they rarely develop into elite 1st round football players before their rookie contract runs out”. Most football analysts will say that the easiest, most plug-and-play out of the box from college to pro position is running back. I have also heard football people saying that one of the hardest transitions (outside of quarterback) is O Line because collegiate football is so different offensively than pro. So if we apply the original thesis to all positions, we should take running backs in the first round and offensive linemen in the latter rounds. I find the OP’s thesis to be a recipe for failure. Null and void.

There is still lots of sexual tension between Ross and Rachel. Phoebe was a surrogate mother for her brother. Monica and Chandler are doing well. Joey may or may not move to California to pursue a spinoff.

...but is it a better training facility than the one in Dallas? Asking for a friend.
