Refugee Crisis in the U. S. (?)
Buffalo_Gal replied to B-Man's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
The Senate on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bipartisan $4.5 billion bill to combat the escalating humanitarian crisis on the southern border, moments after rejecting a House version over its restrictions on enforcement efforts -- setting up a race to reconcile the two measures before Congress leaves town. The Senate bill passed 84-8. That vote in the Republican-controlled chamber came minutes after the House version was voted down 55-37. It's unclear what will come next. The Senate vote could put pressure on the Democrat-controlled House to pass its version before Congress breaks for the July 4 recess. Or the two chambers could try and hash out their differences in what is known as a conference committee. </snip> The nos (this is an eclectic mix): Eight senators – Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii; Mike Lee, R-Utah; Ed Markey, D-Mass.; Bob Menendez, D-N.J.; Jeff Merkley, D-Ore.; Rand Paul, R-Ky.; Chris Van Hollen, D-Md.; and Ron Wyden, D-Ore. – voted against the legislation. -

I wonder if they were escaping political persecution with their children? Clicking over to the La Prensa site (which crashed my browser twice) it said the DHS is the agency that alerted the Mexicans that these fine, upstanding, asylum seeks were on their way: The Universal indicates in its report that the Department of Homeland Security of the United States was the one that alerted the Federal Police of Mexico of the presence of the three migrants in Costa Rica and Panama. -

Trump's leadership team

Meh, not leadership, but I'll stick this here. I never understood his hiring her, and she certainly left in a "blaze of glory" (or a dumpster fire). Clearly rules are for "little people". ?♀️ DOJ files federal lawsuit against Omarosa, alleging she violated ethics law The federal government on Tuesday filed a civil lawsuit against former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, alleging that she failed to file a required financial disclosure report after she was fired. The civil action alleges that Manigault Newman is in violation of the Ethics in Government Act “for knowingly and willfully failing to file the required public financial disclosure report after her employment terminated with the Executive Office of the President.” The Department of Justice is seeking a fine of up to $50,000 against the former "Apprentice" contestant. </snip> "We will pick up these materials immediately and have requested same repeatedly," he continued. "Omarosa Manigault Newman cannot even get a straight answer about the amount of materials wrongfully possessed. This is premature and retaliation. It should not be tolerated." The complaint, filed in federal court in D.C. on Tuesday, alleges that Manigault Newman was told in December 2017 — when she left the White House — that she needed to file a termination financial disclosure report by Jan. 18, 2018. The document states that three emails were sent to her personal email address reminding her of her obligation to file the report. The department alleged that ethics attorneys in the White House counsel’s office then made repeated attempts to contact Manigault Newman, telling her that her financial disclosure report was past due. </anip> -

Trump Wants To Regulate Google

This is terrifying. I know the French do not have "free speech", but yikes - who decides what is "hate speech"? The current party in power? Some schlep in a corner office? And this comes on top of the UN's latest nonsense. EXCLUSIVE-In a world first, Facebook to give data on hate speech suspects to French courts * Follows Macron-Zuckerberg meetings * France seeks to take lead role in regulating tech groups * Hate speech now at "same level as terrorism" - lawyer (Adds comment, background) </snip> "It is a strong signal in terms of regulation," said Sonia Cisse, a counsel at law firm Linklaters, adding that it was a world first. "Hate speech is no longer considered part of freedom of speech, it's now on the same level as terrorism." With Facebook's latest move, France is now a clear frontrunner in the quest to regulate big social media outlets, and other platforms might follow suite, Cisse said. </snip> And then we have this... White House to convene social media summit after new Trump attacks The White House said on Wednesday that it will hold a social media summit next month amid President Trump’s attacks against internet platforms he alleges have anti-conservative bias. White House spokesman Judd Deere told The Hill in an email that the event is set for July 11. “This event will bring together digital leaders for a robust conversation on the opportunities and challenges of today’s online environment,” Deere said. </snip> -

As part of his toast to his daughter and new SIL the day after President Trump announced his being put up for AG... "just before the name Barr is dragged through the mud..." Welp, that just confirms Barr knew this was gonna get ugly. And he still took the position. As has been said many times before (and not just by me), I just do not think he came out of retirement to allow the shenanigans of the last few years (decade?) to continue unpunished. We may joke about #twoweeks, but the corruption was bone deep. It may have only been by a "few" people (and one was too many), but it was at the very top. And that could not be allowed to continue, and it cannot ever happen again.

I don't think Central American corruption is shocking to anyone. I'm not sure why this means "economic asylum seekers" are a problem that United States citizens should have to deal with, however. -

Eric Trump Spit on by Cocktail Bar Worker
Buffalo_Gal replied to McGee Return TD's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
I feel bad for the bar. First thought? If one of their employees is willing to spit on someone's face in full view of the Secret Service and all the bar patrons, what are they doing to the food and beverages outside of public view? ? Either their business gets whacked (because gross), or their business temporarily increases (because WHOOHOOO our employee did gross things to a TRUMP and he didn't press charges!) Second thought? And way to go SS! If she was able to spit in his face, clearly someone could have shot or stabbed him in the time it took his security to react (although since Chicago has tough gun laws, shooting is unlikely, right? ) Third thought? Clearly I prioritize food and drink over safety. -
