Guessing but the red zone offense has probably been less than stellar the last few years and that’s why they were always calling trick plays down there to make up for it. That and not being able to run the ball.

I think the next step in McD’s head coaching maturation is handing over the defense to someone else. If he can’t do that, he will have to go. I’m fine with him staying as HC but the soft zone gotta go. In his update the other day, he tried to distance himself from the defense to make it seem like it’s Babich’s defense and he only helps when needed. Nope. Nice try dude. There’s been a continuous blurring of the lines and that’s to escape accountability. We’ve already seen it play out too. When the heat gets close to him, he just fires the puppet that’s running his defense and continues on.

IMO, in this scenario it’s the HC’s job to make sure the team isn’t in a position to win because you can’t count on the players to do so. You have to make it impossible.

McD defense has always had these flaws. It’s nothing new.

4th and short is the only thing this defense is good at.

Does the worst defense ever turn into the best defense in 3 weeks? Asking for a friend. We should be able to do that with a bonafide “defensive guru” HC right? We are totally screwed.

McD dialing up a bunch of blitzes last week doesn’t give me any confidence either. He knows he’s got major problems (not just injuries) and is trying to stop the bleeding and get ready for what’s ahead. If he’s freaking out, then we should really be freaking out.

We are a bottom 5 defense and they’ve been borderline elite like SC said (perhaps playing like the 10th ranked defense) for many weeks now.

I would think that Terry wouldn’t want to go into a new stadium with 2 more added playoff exits on McD’s resume.

I’m not convinced we can outscore the Ravens if they are healthy. Their defense is also better than ours. We’re pretty much tooled with McD again.

Chief’s D is going to clown Wilson real real bad.

After yesterday’s game, this defense is susceptible to getting blown out and the game against a playoff contender being over at the half. You can’t start that way. It shouldn’t take a half to make adjustments and we shouldn’t be coming out vanilla in first half’s (like some claim.) I understand people’s fear of playing the Bengals. That would’ve been 28-0 at the half.

Very few DE’s have huge games against great opponents in crunch time. It’s pretty hard to access. Derrick Thomas on the Chiefs always disappeared in big games also and everyone loved him.

3rd down defense in big moments has been consistently bad for 3 years or so. Numbers on a screen can’t show you that. As far as back-breaking 3rd and longs being converted, there’s been much improvement this year UNTIL the Rams game. Last year was awful.

Even if he did return to his old self, he’ll just get hurt again 2 weeks later. We can do better. This defense is just so incredibly soft and brittle.

The best I have ever seen McD’s defense was the 2nd Carolina playoff game against Arizona. What we did not know then is that McD defenses only play well against bad QBs. If you go back to their 15-1 schedule you see that it was all against aging, mediocre to bad QBs until the SB, which they blew at the end. Even Manning was a cripple by then but it was enough.

I think if we fired him this year after our exit, and went defensive heavy in the next draft, we’d be halfway there with a new scheme, or at least be as good as we are now (which is pretty bad) in 1 season. 2 drafts and we’d be ready to roll. The other option is to give him an ultimatum. Hire a DC with new scheme and hands off the defense entirely, or you’re fired.

Don’t you hate when Beane gets off his leash and fills the entire building with Great Value defensive players. McD must be a mastermind to work with that crap! Imagine how good the defense would be if McD picked the players.
