METS FANS: Seven Years Ago Today (7/29/22) ... Wilmer Cried
SinceThe70s replied to Gugny's topic in Off the Wall
That night was only half of the story. The trade-in-place was for Carlos Lopez but it fell through due to medical concerns with Lopez. Mets were left with egg on their face allowing the leak that led to pretty much everyone in the stadium knowing about the trade except Wilmer and not getting the impact player they needed. I don't remember the exact timeline - and I'm too lazy to look it up - but within the next two days or so the Mets landed Cespedes at the trade deadline and Wilmer hit a walk-off HR. Cespedes ended up carrying the Mets to the World Series. -
New York Yankees 2022....Aaron Judge sets AL record with HR #62
SinceThe70s replied to BADOLBILZ's topic in Off the Wall
One could also consider Babe Ruth's 60 HR's the record since he did it in a 154 game season whereas Maris hit his 61st on the last day of a 162 game season. -
Always nice to beat our cross-town rivals. What stuck out for me was the bullpen. Diaz was outstanding - especially after botching the Judge come-backer. That had all the makings of a melt-down. Another positive for me was Lugo. If he can get back to what he was we could finally have a 1-2 punch to close out games. As for Petersen, the 4 pitch walk to Rizzo was more disappointing than the HR to me. Nice bounce-back strikeout - let's hope he can (and has to) transition to the lefty reliever role for the rest of the year.

Not a love for early 80's metal in these parts. Same royalty, different time of day:

Two cool pieces if trivia from the Mets radio broadcast tonight: There were 4 HRs in the first inning tonight (Judge, Rizzo, Marte, Escobar). Thats's the first time it's ever happened in a Mets home game. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is a distant cousin of Hall of Famer and long time Mets broadcaster Ralph Kiner. -

Last week I learned that Friendly's discontinued the Wattamelon and now this. Ugh. -

My brother-in-law did something similar at a Jets game. They let anyone into the lower bowl for pre-game warmups. Just before they kicked everyone out he checked stubhub for an open seat.

Parking Advice for Garth Brooks Concert
SinceThe70s replied to PetermansRedemption's topic in Off the Wall
I can't help with parking advice, but I'd go with @Draconator's suggestion. Another option is to beat feet out of the stadium as soon as the last note is played. While Garth and company are taking their curtain calls you'll be half way to wherever you parked. -
Chin up!

I'm late to the game but I'd go with Flutie, Tyrod, Fitz. What they all had in common (the rest of the pack too if you don't like my top 3) is that you knew they weren't good enough to carry the Bills to a Super Bowl but you hoped they could have a Dilfer-esque run. What a great time it is to go into the season fully confident that the QB is more than capable of winning it all. Good times.

Just came across this thread and you nailed it. I remember being really excited about Bledsoe those first 8 games - and appalled at what followed. When he went to Dallas my Cowboy-fan friend was excited and I told him to expect an interception throwing tackle dummy. He had the arm, but nothing else IMO.

That picture reminds me of a time around 40 years ago sitting in a freshman lecture hall, bored as hell and my friend points out a guy a few rows in front of us and whispers "if that kid could wiggle his ears he'd fly away". Good times.

Baseball is the best of the four bcause it's a non-contact sport so both high-end offense and high-end defense can be on display.

Most dramatic sports moment you saw?
SinceThe70s replied to Miyagi-Do Karate's topic in Off the Wall
LOL - 90% is about right for me since well, the 70s. But I did not see that comeback and I also missed Piazza's HR to win the first game back after 9/11. LFGM!!! -
Your point about mind adjustment hit home for me. On a recent leisurely drive in upstate NY I could see that rain was coming, but driving at highway speed conditions devolved more rapidly and intensely than I expected. It was pretty much a white-out and at an interchange with a bunch of semis around me. Wifey suggested to pull off to the shoulder - and a bunch of cars did just that - but I felt safer pressing on at a slower speed with the hazards on. TBH not sure whether that was the right decision or not, but it worked out because the storm was short-lived.

Seeing it live has to be Matt Franco's GW 2 RBI single in the bottom of the 9th against the immortal Mariano Rivera to cap off a 9-8 mid-season win. The game was epic. The Bronx Bombers lived up to their name with 6 no-doubt-off-the bat HR's. Pretty sure Posada and O'Neill had two each. Piazza hit the longest HR of the day - a three run blast that I think reached the parking lot to make it 7-6. Bottom 9, bases loaded, two outs, 8-7 Yankees, Rivera on the mound. With two strikes on Franco the ump calls a ball - it was close and having seen the replay could have gone either way. The next pitch Franco wins it with a somewhat close play at the plate: -

I didn't know if you were kidding about flag football and had to google it. I would watch it.

I love the uncommon sports. It was cool seeing my high schooler get into the biathlon competition this year. Winter olympics has done a nice job including snowboarding and things like short-track speed skating.

IMO, the World Cup soccer tournament makes soccer the #1 global sport. No other sport that I can think of has an equivalent global championship with mass interest across so many countries.
