I just hope its not the Bills trading up if it happens.
-
Oh well. I didn't expect Curry to last until 11 anyway.
-
I think it'll be Sanchez. Hasselbeck is getting old and looked awful last year.
-
Now it gets interesting. There's been a lot of speculation from the 'experts' the last day or two that Tyson Jackson would be picked by Kansas City. We'll see. I think they pick Curry.
-
The good news is that he's definitely just speculating. If they take Michael Johnson at 28, I'm going to barf. Repeatedly.

fun first-round draft game
Brandon replied to Offside Number 76's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
51/56. I missed Jim Everett, Chuck Long, Kelly Stouffer, David Klingler and Kyle Boller. In Boller's case, I could see his face but couldn't think of his name for anything. -

10 minutes in the first, 7 minutes in the second, five for the rest.

Britton at 28 would be a good pick. He might not be the greatest LT prospect, but I think he could certainly be a quality player for the Bills at LG or RT, plus he might surprise as a LT. That's good enough for me. Maybin ? Very, very risky. I can't say I like it at all. I would be apprehensive about drafting him at 28, much less at 11. The upside is considerable, no question, but I'd have a hard time justifying a major project at 11, especially when passing up a prototypical 4-3 DE (or something close to it) such as Orakpo in order to do it.

Not A Fan of the 4 PM Start Time
Brandon replied to ChevyVanMiller's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The reason I've heard is that the NFL wanted it to be more of a prime-time TV event and to cut down the length of day one. The stupid thing is, in practice, it accomplishes neither. The first two rounds will still last until around midnight, yet the top 10 picks will all be long since off the board well before the primetime TV hours tonight. Myself, I love the fact that they cut down the pick times in round one and two, but otherwise, the new draft scheduling format instituted last year totally and completely sucks. -
Russ Brandon -This could b bad news

Cushing also came to mind, but I think Pettigrew is much more likely simply because he does not have the injury concerns that Cushing does . Plus, he's a far better blocker than the remaining TEs in this draft, a skill which the Bills seem to covet at the position. As for me wanting the pick to be Pettigrew, guess again. I like him, but he's not my first, or second, or perhaps third choice for that pick. -

Well, if he's being honest about that, then it sounds like they've zeroed in on someone that they know will be available. That would seem to suggest that Pettigrew is most likely their pick. Of course, again, that's assuming he's being honest...a dubious assumption at best on the morning of the draft. -

That's good news, IMO. I'd like to see the Bills be able to fill a few holes, but at the same time, I absolutely do not want to see them reach for need. That's how Donte Whitner goes from being a concensus late 1st round pick to 8th overall. -
Percy Harvin ... Do you take him at 41?
Brandon replied to Clarence H.'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn't. If the Bills are going to select a WR with one of the latter two picks they have today, I think they'll go with a possession receiver type. That's especially true if they miss out on Brandon Pettigrew and are left with only the 2nd tier TE prospects. At least in the passing game, a big possession receiver would be the next best thing. I think they might, might pick Brian Robiskie at 28, depending upon how the first round plays out. -
If Crabtree falls, we're taking him at #11...
Brandon replied to SKOOBY's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The interesting thing about the Lions is that they've tried both approaches to no avail. Everyone rags them for selecting WRs high, but they tried going the OL route early in the decade. They even tossed in a few high round DL and LBs for good measure. That didn't work, either. The moral of this story? Just because you draft an OL in round one doesn't automatically make them any good. The Bills need to be careful that they don't fall into that particular trap. If they don't have an OL or defensive front seven player rated very highly when they're up at 11, they need to trust their board instead of attempting to satisfy the fans. -
I agree, to an extent. The Bills' aren't so much lacking in talent as they are lacking in difference-makers. I wouldn't restrict that just to skill position players as you have, but the Bills desperately need this 11th overall pick to develop into a player who can take over a game. I'd prefer that they find a DE, OLB or DT who fits that description, but I am not at all averse to picking a WR, CB, or whatever, if they can bring big play ability to the table. I doubt it happens at 11, though. If they take a flyer on a supposed non-need position, it'll probably happen at 28, especially if the Bills are satisfied with their OTs and essentially view it as a free 1st round pick.

Brandon replied to SKOOBY's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The financial cost is the barrier with Boldin. The 11th pick is probably going to sign for five or six years in the low/mid $20M range. Boldin? Its going to take an awful lot more than that to make him happy. -

Brandon replied to SKOOBY's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn't have any argument with it. Sure, they signed TO, but how long is that going to last? One year...and then we're right back where we started. Maybe James Hardy and his knee turn into a quality WR, maybe Steve Johnson defies the odds as a 7th rounder...or maybe not. If the Bills think Crabtree is an elite talent and if the injury situation checks out, they'd be stupid to pass on him given their struggles of the last decade in the passing game. Not that it matters. I'd be stunned if Crabtree makes it out of the top 10. -
Agreed. There's a difference when comparing Ayers and Maybin in terms of past production given that Maybin is an underclassman. Still, its a problem for both of them. At that particular position, I'd much rather that a player have a strong history of year-to-year production if I plan on drafting them high. A high percentage of one-hit wonders at DE end up being flops in the NFL.

Nor can I. DT is the major need that seems completely off the fans' radar this offseason. Assuming that McCargo gets canned, they have only three on the entire roster, two of which are better suited as backups. Then there's the atrocious Bills run defense, which allowed 1946 yards and 18 TDs...and the scary thing is, it was probably their best year since 2004 versus the run. Its a position that needs a starter and needs depth. The problem is that once you get past Raji, whom I view as the best defensive player in this draft, this is an awful group of DTs. If he's on the board at 11, I think they'd be crazy to pass on him.

How much you wanna bet they throw another
Brandon replied to HelloNewman's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
As I've stated previously, I think that its a very good possibility. The Bills always manage to throw a curveball into the first few picks and while everyone complains about it when it happens, a year or two down the road, it ends up looking like a good pick. It won't happen at 11, but at 28, I can definitely see a situation where they draft a CB or a WR depending upon who else is available at that pick. They're in good shape right now at both positions, but Owens is a one-year rental and McGee will be 30 next year. Both will be significant needs moving forward and the Bills might just decide to get it over with now. -
You may not want to hear it, but I think the one year wonder argument has some validity. Sometimes the best predictor of the future is to look to the past. I ripped that quote off of a scout regarding Robert Ayers, and it was used in a slightly different context, but its something to think about in this case, too. How many one-hit wonders at DE come into the NFL and ever have success? A few, but its rare. Add in the fact that he's undersized to his inexperience and lack of previous production and I think he carries considerable risk as an 11th overall pick. The talent is certainly there, don't get me wrong, but Manny Lawson, Michael Haynes, Erasmus James and Erik Flowers and a few others that never really did much were talented one-year wonders, too. That's not to say that Maybin definitely will follow the same path, but that he carries a high degree of risk at a position that's already one of the riskiest picks to make in round one.

The Long Awaited, Highly Respected Mock Draft
Brandon replied to San Jose Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Can't say I'd be too happy with that. With the exception of Orakpo, I don't think any of these DEs are worth the 11th pick and even with him, its a little bit of a stretch. Maybin is going to be a project, a fact made more painful by the fact that they'd be passing over Raji to get him. Unger would be a better choice at 42. My biggest fear with him is that he'll just be a utility lineman in the NFL, best suited as a 6th OL coming off the bench. Don't get me wrong, he's probably better than that, which is why I think he'd be a decent R2 pick, but I don't think its much of a stretch to think that's all he'll ever be, either.
