I feel sorry for the teams that do need a QB. The two guys at the top of the draft this year stink and at least one of them is going to go in the top 10, perhaps #1 overall.
-
I normally follow the draft much more closely, but this group of first round prospects just isn't that interesting. In most years, I've settled on a few players I'd like for them to draft, but this year, unless Raji somehow makes it to their pick, I'm not going to worry about it much. Its as boring a group of first round prospects as I've seen in a while.

Yep...and as if bench reps are a great indicator of a player's ultimate future in the NFL. Hell, we need a DT. Maybe we can bring Leif Larsen back in. With his 50+ reps, he should be the greatest DT to ever play the game. All I know is that the Bills have had a year now to watch Bell in practice and in the weight room. They know far more about him than they do any of these equally unproven draft prospects. If the Bills feel that he can handle a starting spot on their OL, I'm not going to argue with them. They obviously know far more about him than any of us do. That's no guarantee that he'll succeed, but there's no guarantee that an 11th overall pick at OT will, either, and there are plenty of question marks surrounding those guys as well.

Peter King has lots of Bills thoughts
Brandon replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To be fair, the Bills would have eight more picks, including two more in the top 42. Plus, the DE crop is rather underwhelming, while the top OTs likely remaining have major question marks of their own. I'm not sure that I'd draft Pettigrew with that pick, but all things considered, I don't think its a bad pick, either. Will they actually pick Pettigrew at 11? Probably. It fits their recent draft tendency of targeting a player with that first pick who will start immediately and that they know will be on the board with the pick. -
I'd have to cast another vote against. I wouldn't be upset if they pick him, but the lack of production and blocking ability are big concerns. Echoing previous posters, I'd prefer taking a player that perhaps isn't as good an athlete as he is, but is a better all around football player. My choice in the 2nd would be either Shawn Nelson or James Casey.

Will you give Trent Edwards some space this year?
Brandon replied to joe w bags's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It depends upon how the OL is playing. If its a jailbreak on every play, yeah, I can cut Edwards a little more slack than I otherwise might. Of course, if its that bad, Edwards will look like Rob Johnson Mk.2 by the end of the season anyway, so it won't matter. They'll have to replace him anyway. -
Two reasons. One, as has already been stated, any time a guy has that much ability but doesn't start until his senior year, it definitely makes you wonder why. Second, and more importantly, watching him play, he appears to give inconsistent effort, needs major technique work, and plays like he weighs about 200lbs. On the latter point, in particular, he is going to get buried in the NFL unless he gets significantly stronger, and with his height, he's already at a major disadvantage with regards to leverage in the running game. Is he a great athlete? Definitely. Can he become a good NFL DE? Possibly. Do I expect him to? Not really.

The Bills lose more than they gain from it, IMO. Hypothetically speaking, if the Bills were to use that 4th round pick to replace Parrish, is it more likely that the replacement would be better or worse than he was? Certainly, its more likely that the replacement would be worse, which is why the Cowboys would want to make that trade to begin with. So the question is, where's the value for the Bills?

Here's the full 7 round order for the Bills. 11 28 42 75 110 121 147 183 220

How will the oline look opening day
Brandon replied to mike6683's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What happened to Brad Butler? He's the Bills' best offensive lineman at the moment and probably was this past season as well. I expect the starting lineup for game 1 of the regular season to look like this: LT Walker LG- Rookie Draft Pick C- Hangartner RG- Butler RT- Bell I'm guessing that the Bills will be targeting Eben Britton at 28 as the rookie and will select one of the C or G prospects as a contingency plan if he's no longer available when they pick. -
I don't like it at all. I'd much rather they wait until at least pick 28 to address the offensive line. The 3rd or 4th best LT probably isn't going to be an immediate starter at that position, anyway, and given that, they're better off drafting a guy like Britton at 28 to play LG for at least this year and perhaps be a prospect at one of the tackle positions down the road. Pettigrew? I can't make up my mind about him at 11, but he'd be good value at 28. Based on the times I've seen him play, I'm not sure I'd draft Michael Johnson in R3. As for the CB, I don't know, maybe he's good, but do we need another?
-
Well, I suppose if you're really asking who will have a breakout year, I can think of a few. Brad Butler was a good choice earlier. He'll never be recognized nationally since he wasn't a high pick, but he's a very good RG. Defensively? Posluszny. Last year was basically his rookie year and not surprisingly, he struggled at times. With a season of experience behind him, I think he'll come back this year as a much better player.
-
Good question. I'm not at all sold on him, or any of these DEs, for that matter. If I had to pick one of them, at this point, it would probably be Tyson Jackson. No, he's not a great pass rusher, either, but at 295lbs, I don't expect him to be. What he can do is help this team's 22nd ranked run defense, plus, at his size, he offers them some versatility and should easily be able to shift inside on passing downs. Not only that, but should they ever switch back to a 3-4 (and I think this coaching staff's days in Buffalo are numbered), they'd have an ideal DE candidate in place already.

Clayton says Bills likely not done dealing
Brandon replied to jahnyc's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why bother? A punt returner isn't worth a whole lot, but at the same time, does anyone think the Bills can find an equal replacement with a 5th round pick? Its possible, I suppose, but not very likely. So what value would this trade hold for the Bills? None that I can see. -
So, the Bills have an OL consisting of: LT-Walker LG-McKinney/Hangartner C- McKinney/Hangartner RG- Butler RT- Bell The interior three should be adequate. Walker likely will be as well. That leaves Bell as the unknown. Its not a great group by any stretch, but they could do worse, I suppose. In fact, they've done much worse at times earlier in this decade.
-
Its not the same as a game, but its the best they have. By the same token, lets not forget that none of these prospects have played a down in the NFL, either.
-
The Bills see Demetrius Bell every day that they practice. They're in a position to judge him more accurately than we are. And lets not forget that it hasn't been long ago at all that they put their trust in a completely unproven Jason Peters.
-
It depends upon their opinions of both Kirk Chambers and Demetrius Bell. If they like both guys, they can afford to wait a bit to add some competition at OT. This is a good class of OTs. They can afford to show some patience as there's likely to be a good one available at 28. They could even wait until pick 42, knowing that they have enough draft picks remaining that they could move up from that spot if they had to. The best idea of all might be to move down from 11 if possible, acquiring another 2nd round pick in the process. This would give them a total of four picks in the first two rounds, which would go a long way towards building up this team.

Sources: Peters to Eagles for three picks
Brandon replied to TimGraham's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'll reserve judgement until I see what the conditions on the 2010 pick are. As it stands, its a bit underwhelming, but at the same time, but they didn't have much choice. -
Who's your 2009 "Whitner Pick" at #11
Brandon replied to Kingfish's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If by a 'Whitner' pick you mean a reach for need that can only barely be justified at 11, I think it would be Robert Ayers. -
Draft review: How every team ranks from 2003-'08
Brandon replied to OnTheRocks's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Pro Bowlers: 1 If you want to know why the Bills suck, that's why. They're great at finding guys who are just good enough to hold onto the starting job, but they rarely do any better than that. A team full of average players usually won't win many games. -
That's a really good question and I haven't heard a satisfactory answer, either. The last time the Bills drafted a DE who had all of this supposed talent, but with mediocre collegiate production, his name was Chris Kelsay. We all know how well that one turned out, though thankfully, he was picked in the 2nd and not the first.

Why is no one talking about Robert Ayers at #11?
Brandon replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He may well end up being better than Brown, Maybin or Orakpo. From top to bottom, I don't really like this DE class very much. For my part, I think its extremely unlikely that Ayers ever becomes more than an ordinary pass rusher in the NFL and if size/strength are the priority at DE, I'd rather just take Tyson Jackson at 11. I think he'll be at least as good of a pass rusher in the NFL as Ayers, while being an immovable object in the running game. -

Brandon replied to 1billsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I suppose its possible that he'll turn into a guy who posts 8-10 sacks per year in the NFL, but in almost all cases, if a DE can't get to the QB in college, he won't do it in the NFL, either. Perhaps Ayers is an exception, but the odds are definitely against him. I wouldn't draft him before the 2nd round, at the earliest.
