Attn Breaking Bad Fans: Better Call Saul begins Sun 2/8 10pm

Quirky hot! I agree! -
A little of both. The first episode revolved around the New York Dolls, while the second and third episodes had side stories that revolved around the Velvet Underground and Alice Cooper. However, there is a fictional band called the Nasty Bits (the lead singer is played by James Jagger, Micks' boy). The show is getting ripped pretty bad by "insiders" and "hipsters", but I think they would rip it no matter what it was... It has the requisite (for a Scorsese work) mob-angle...that it the thing that I have the most trouble with (it just doesn't really seem necessary just yet)..it isn't whether Johnny Thunders is playing a guitar in 1973 which, in reality, didn't get issued until 1976..or any of that stuff... rock -n'roll history is so full of mythology and half-truths, I think people kind of miss the point sometimes on the show... as the main character says in the opening episode, this is the story, how he remembers it...but he qualifies it by admitting, he took a lot of drugs... I worked in the music industry in the 80's, in NYC, and kind of caught the tail end of some of this...there were a lot of old timers left over at that point...they had very old school values that didn't always jibe with the current music. I applaud the effort. I would ask people who rip it if they would just assume that all of these stories just be forgotten, because Scorsese, Jagger and Winter's mythology doesn't necessarily match theirs. I think, if nothing else, if you have an appreciation for classic rock, and the hodge podge of what made up popular music in the 70's, you will find the show pretty entertaining. It is very well made, well acted...your true appreciation will be determined, it seems by how much of a stickler you are for details. I like it, and I think it will get better. I think as it goes on, Terrance Winter (Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, American Hustle) will likely do most of the heavy lifting on the show....and some of Scorece's more predictable proclivities will blend into the back-drop a little more. I always liked Winters' work.

Best bands you've never heard of...

The office I work in is located inside a conference center/hotel....I don't think a week day has gone by in over a year where I haven't heard a "muzak" version of "Start Me Up"... The irony! I vote for The Damnations, Those Darlins, Detroit Cobras and the Delines -
Josina Anderson: Mario open to pay cut to stay with Bills
Buftex replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Honestly, I don't think it has anything to do with his age, or diminishing skills..I think it was all attitude with Mario last season. I remember re-watching a game, keying in, speicifically on him...I think it was the Redskins game...he just was just playing very half-heartedly, and his body language, as the defense was setting up for their next snap was showing utter disgust and frustration... It seemed, especially the first half of the season, other defensive players were kind of Mario's side in this battle of wills...but as the season wore on, more and more started to "buy in", leaving Mario as the only one still struggling to adapt to the changes. It happens in all types of jobs, when there are changes...football players are no different. It sounds as though, now that the season is over, Mario has had a little time to reflect...maybe he now realizes his attitude was part of his problem, and also, that he isn't going to make near the money he was slated to make in Buffalo, anywhere else. Personally, if the numbers can be worked out, I want him back. They are going to have to pay somebody to play that position...Mario is way too good of a ball player to give up on that easily... particularly if he is willing to accept a reasonable contract. -
I like Vinyl okay, though I thought the murder thing was a little unnecessary. But, HBO (and most of America, myself included) loves their mobster stories! It is getting ripped pretty mercilessly by a lot of people. Cannavale is great...a lot to like about this show, though I am hoping it learns the art of subtly the longer it goes on.

What is your 2016 Marketing Slogan Suggestion?
Buftex replied to PlayoffsPlease's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
For Real!.....this time -
Like some of the best corners in the game, Winnfield got better and better each year...when he left Buffalo, his game went to another level as a Viking. Looking at stats never tells the whole story. Winnfield was a great tackler, and was a great run supporter....jeez...these kind of threads always get my blood boiling. This team, frankly, has been mostly garbage (much as I love them) for 15+ years..its' a team game...there have been some fine football players in Buffalo over the past 15 year, just never enough of them at one time...I once heard Joe Montana opine that had he not ended up in San Francisco, when he did, he very well might have never had the great NFL career he had.
-
Everyone loves Don Beebe...I would say he is overrated amongst Bills fans, at least. He is the classic example of the guy who would make the eye-popping "circus catch" every few games, but then drop some of the easiest passes...he was very erratic, to be fair. I am noticing that a lot of really great Bills players from the Super Bowl era are being lumped into the "overrated" category...not the first time I have wondered if I watched the same teams as some of you...or does time and exposure to really bad/mediocre football really erode our memories of good teams and players.

I agree with you about Moulds. He was very talented no doubt, but once he "arrived" in the NFL (with Flutie) he got into this annoying habit (annoying to me anyways) of playing to draw PI calls (which he rarely got) rather than making an honest attempt to catch the ball. Great athlete, with some lazy tendencies, by my estimation. Always whining to the refs....I think it really went to his head in 2002, with Bledsoe throwing the ball to him. True, Eric never had the consistency at QB that probably would have made his career even better...but amongst Bills fans, he seems like an untouchable. I think that is mostly among younger fans, who had precious little to cheer for over the last 15-20 years. Underrated: some of the names being thrown about as being over/underrated are kind of silly...what Bills fan underrates Ted Washington? I will throw Joe Cribbs on the underrated list..he was a stud...all most Bills fans seem to remember of him is that he held out, and jumped to the USFL... Cribbs, along with Fergy and Jerry Butler, vaulted the Bills offense into the 20th century, after a decade of, primarily, OJ left, OJ right, OJ up the middle. If Cribbs hadn't jumped to the USFL, I think he would be remembered as one of the true greats of his era...he, along with Roger Craig, were early pre-cursers to the double threat running back...they could line up as receiver just as effectively as they could run the ball. Great player. Another all-time underrated, is Travis Henry. A bonehead off the field, but a real warrior on the field.

The biggest difference between Rex and Wade is that Philiips has proven to be considerably more flexible and able to be successful with the pieces that he has. I guarantee you, if Wade had taken over the Bills defence in 2015, there wouldn't have been such a sizable drop off. Wade's success as a defensive coach has spanned nearly 40 years. During that time, he routinely had top 10 defenses despite the many rule changes he has seen in his days, Hell, remember when he overhauled the Bills defense at the bye week and turned them form a 3-4 to a 4-3, without missing a beat? Rex has a long way to go, in my opinion, before he can be compared to Wade. As a head coach, his results weren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. His overall record was 82-64 (.562). He coached 8 full seasons, finishing below .500 only once (7-9), one season at .500 (he was 8-8 in his last season with Buffalo), and finished with double digit victory totals 6 times. Hid playoff record is where his problems lie...1-5.

"Baskets" on FX is hilarious. Only 3 episodes so far...it gets funnier each week. Zach Galifinakis is brilliant, as they say!

Celtics playing great right now! -
Watched the first episode..I thought it was pretty awful...I can't believe the rave reviews this has been getting. I don't get how they went all out of their way to cast people who looked so much like the real people they are playing...except OJ. Cuba not only doesn't look like OJ, he sounds nothing like him. I get that this is going to focus more on Marcia Clark, Shapiro and Johnny Cochran...and maybe I am too familiar with OJ (he has been a big part of my life for about 45 years, good and bad), but Goodings appearance and pretty hollow acting were hard to get past. And, the "big star", John Travolta, comes off as more an imitator than an actor. In trying to sound like Shapiro, and the terrible makeup job, he came off like Peter Brady doing Bogart with "pork chops and applesauce". As someone who, admittedly, was way too obsessed with this case as it was happening, I was pretty disappointed with the first episode..felt like a Lifetime movie..the worst. I will give it another episode, but any time I turn off a show, with a "cast of thousands" and David Schwimmer is the the best thing about it, I have to ask myself "why the hell am I watching this?" I know, it is just one episode, and maybe it gets better (NY Times gave it a very good review, and it appears the reviewer saw the whole thing already), but I was not impressed. To be fair, the woman who plays Marcia Clark is pretty good too... I think the OJ Simpson murder trial could be a great movie,,,but I get the feeling this isn't going to be it.

Out of curiosity...say the Bills go on a Bengals type run
Buftex replied to Billsfed's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think he will be there...his cost will be low....they will probably draft a developmental guy. There just aren't a lot of vetran, experienced guys who are likely to be a lot better. Whaley has already kind of said as much... -
Paul Kantner of the Jefferson Airplane has died
Buftex replied to ChevyVanMiller's topic in Off the Wall Archives
Have to admit, I was never a huge Jefferson Airplane/Starship fan...I like the obvious classic singles from the Airplane era alright (White Rabbit, Somebody to Love, etc etc..the ones that show up any every other movie soundtrack), but never really "got" the hippy-dippy Bay vibe thing. One thing I will always remember about Kantner though, which I appreciated, was his retelling of leaving Jefferson Starship in the mid-80's....he rather vehemently, and with great disdain in his voice, reminisced about his last show with the band (he was the last original member), and saying how they were in the middle of "We Built This City" and he just couldn't surpress it any more... despite the tremendous pay out that song made for the band, he hated it so much, and hated the music they were doing so much by that point, that he "just couldn't do another show with them". He was clear that it wasn't the people, but just the music itself...I appreciate that kind of honesty! RIP -
I have always liked Cam Newton, and I have always kinda liked the Broncos, and separately, always kinda liked Manning...so, cliché as it is, I am just hoping for a good game...the result doesn't matter so much to me. After mostly dreadful Super Bowls between 1985-1998, we have been treated to some pretty memorable championship games over the last 15 years or so...the only really terrible ones were the Colts/Bears, and Broncos/Seahawks...Mannings greatest and worst moments...

Is it wise to grossly underpay your starting QB?
Buftex replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
PTR..I agree with you on that point...people laughing at the notion that Tyrod is a "19 million dollar QB", just aren't paying attention...19 million dollars is a lot of money, but put it in context of today's NFL, and it isn't as much as it sounds like. I will be curious to see how much Brock Osweiller gets as a free agent. -
I feel so old...I had a big thing for her mother...40 years ago!

Is it wise to grossly underpay your starting QB?
Buftex replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not sure why everyone is so worried about how much money Tyrod makes. Tyrod understands the deal he signed. It was structured in a way to ensure that he will have a big payday (with the Bills or elsewhere), when he honors the contract he signed, and shows the level of consistency and that any team that is serious about winning, needs to have from a highly paid starting QB. I think Tyrod understands that. He came to Buffalo so he would have a legit opportunity to show that he is a top half starting level NFL QB. He is on his way...let him get there... As Whaley said when asked about TT's contract, if Tyrod continues to grow as a player, the way they think he can, they will be more than happy to pay him what his value is, when the time comes. Yeah, I understand, you don't want Tryod to make the desired progress, and be po'd that he isn't making more money...but I haven't seen any indication that is the situation. He was really good in 2015, better than many expected, but he still has to show some more improvement before the Bills get themselves into that kind of a contract situation...it has been referenced ad nauseam I know..but just remember the Fitzpatrick situation. How wise would it be to rip up Taylors contract, which has a salary manageable year coming up, when the team already has other cap issues. Why make, what is already a tight spot, even tighter, if you don't have to? Who would prefer to make Tyrod a 19 million dollar man, and then, say, get into a situation where they can't re-sign Glenn or Incognito? Tyrod will have his money, but his performance could decline significantly if he loses the talent in front of him... Let it all paly out... -
NFL Live: Bills teams worst Super Bowl opponents as per Jaws
Buftex replied to K D's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I didn't see the Jaws segment, but it seems like he might be saying that the Bills teams were the most overmatched going into their Super Bowl appearances, not that they necessarily were the worst teams to play in the Super Bowl, or that they gave their opponents the easiest game. As I recall, the only Super Bowl the Bills were favored in was their first, against the Giants. As I recall, everyone who was paying attention, kind of wondered how the Bills defense (good, but not elite in those years) was going to match up with the Redskins, and the Cowboys in back to back years. The Redskins were a machine the year we played them (Rypens' fluke season) and the Cowboys were a model of offensive efficiency, with one of the greatest offensive lines in modern football history, in an era where that mattered more than ever. We can all come up with Super Bowls that were even worse than the ones the Bills lost in, but remember, when the Broncos were losing Super Bowls with Elway, they had a really good defense...as I recall, the top defense the year they got blown out by the Giants. If Jaws meant that the Bills teams gave the worst performances in the Super Bowl, than he is the tool he appears to be. For me, the worst Super Bowl performances by a team that I can remember (my Super Bowl Memories go back to about 1977), would have to be the 1985 Patriots, 1994 Chargers, 2000 NY Giants, and the 2014 Broncos....the Bears team that lost to Manning's Colts was pretty bad too...and if I am being objective, the 1992 Bills. Ironically, other than "wide right", the Bills most memorable Super Bowl moment came out of that game, when Beebe robbed a showboating Leon Lett of a touchdown. -
I know it was mentioned earlier, but for anyone who is still looking for a show, and has yet to see "Fargo"...it is fantastic. I watched the entire first season, and am 7 episodes through season two. For me, it is in that "cut above"t the rest...maybe the best thing on tv right now (or Mr Robot)...but, of course, I say that realizing there are just too many good shows on tv right now, to keep up with them all. For me, it is somewhere in that "Sopranos", "Breaking Bad", "Mad Men", "Boardwalk Empire" zone...can't recommend it enough. I realize, I am late to the party. I kept hearing how outstanding season two was, and was assured by others that watching season 1 was not necessary to fully enjoy season 2. Probably true, but I am a completionist... so I watched season 1, and was blown away...couldn't imagine season two being a lot better...so far though...wow!

Glen Frey and Lemmie? This will be the first band in rock n-roll heaven to break up for musical reasons. I always liked the Eagles. It seems the Big Leboski made it hipster cool to trash them...Their music is such a big part of my youth. Could kick myself for not going to see them earlier in 2015. The 2 part "History of the Eagles" is one of the best music documentaries I have ever seen. The fact that they co-operated with it, and insisted that it not gloss over what douchebags they could be, kinda made me respect them even more. The sound-board recording of Frey threatening Felder on stage gave me goose bumps...one of those kind of stories you hear and you only kind of half believe...but there it is right on tape!
