It looks like the Pegulas called Marrone's bluff . . . or (the feeling I had as soon as we heard about opt out) he is going "home" to coach the Jets.

Joe B just lost all credibility, Part II

I have seen him plenty. I am a Canes fan. Jameis is not the guy you want to build your team around as far as I am concerned. You miss my point about EJ. EJ may end up being no more an NFL QB than he is right now. On the other hand, if he is allowed time to develop, I think that he has potential given the tools that he already has and his work ethic. I have no faith in Jameis' work ethic or, more importantly, character to put in the work to be a top 10 or 15 NFL QB. He is a HUUUUGE risk for anyone who takes him. In fact, rather than get better, Jameis has regressed this past year compared to 2013. Regarding accuracy, Jameis has thrown 7 more interceptions in 2014 in 12 games thus far compared to EJ's 14 games in his 2012 season (17 INTs v. 10 INTs). EJ's INT % .0258% v. Winston INT % .0402%. EJ's completion percentage was 68% compared to Winston's 65.4% with a y/a .4 yards more than Winston. Neither EJ nor Winston are/were ready to step in as an NFL QB like someone such as Andrew Luck. Both will have to work hard to even have a chance to be a good NFL QB and/or reach their potential. I have a lot more faith in EJ's character and work ethic. -
Erin Andrews date or Bills home playoff game?
Peter replied to BrycePaup4ever's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Home playoff game for sure. I am happily married and any "date" presumably would include Jarret Stoll. Erin Andrews actually seems like she would be a lot of fun to hang out with. She likes both football and hockey. -

I would not trade anything to move up to pick Winston. I would have a hard time picking him with the 50th pick in the draft. Given the choice between EJ and Jameis, I would prefer to continue to develop EJ (and see what is out there in FA). EJ is a great kid and teammate, works hard, and was a complete professional when the Bills went with KO. I do not see any of those qualities with Jameis. Also, keep in mind that in watching Jameis these past two seasons, FSU has much better players at pretty much every other position than just about every team they have played. It will be interesting to see how Jameis does this week (and against Alabama or OSU if FSU gets that far). -
Russ Brandon and Marrone's Opt-Out Clause
Peter replied to Bills1218's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This. Marrone's demeanor was different this past year compared to his first year. I am not surprised that he has become more guarded and grumpy for the reasons you mention. -
Is it more likely that we can get a very good guard with the 50th pick in the draft or a top echelon QB? The question answers itself.

Should The Bills Retain CJ Spiller?
Peter replied to PolishDave's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like CJ and would like him to be part of the team. I do believe that, with a better interior line (on the Bills or another team), he will return to his prior production. I also think that he is a good teammate and is well liked by Fred and others on the team. At the end of the day, it is going to depend on $$$$. -
Unless the Bills have someone that is clearly an elite head coach waiting in the wings, I think that Marrone has earned continuing as head coach. Many in the Buffalo media and here take the position that the modern NFL is all about the QB (I think that the QB obviously is important, but also believe that succeeding in the NFL is more than just the QB). Nevertheless, accepting the premise that I hear nearly every day on the radio and also have read here, Marrone, as head coach of the Bills in 2014, had a better record than the teams with the following QBs (who at one time or another people have wanted on the Bills or have considered to be better than what we have had): Colin Kaepernick Cam Newton Drew Brees Teddy Bridgewater Brian Hoyer Eli Manning Matt Ryan Cutler RGIII He also had one fewer win than Chip Kelly - who some here and elsewhere consider to be a genius. As for Hackett, I remember how last year many were screaming for Marrone to fire the special teams coach and thought that he was kept as cronyism. The special teams improved as the special teams players improved. I am not going to pretend that i am happy with the performance of the offense. Yet, I have a hard time concluding with conviction that Hackett cannot be a good OC with better guards and above average play from whoever our QB may be. At the end of the day, I am willing to give these coaches another year. In Bill Parcells first two season, he was 3-12-1, and 9-7. No, I am not saying Marrone is Bill Parcells. I am just using this to illustrate that it is tough to conclude a guy is a failure as a head coach after just two seasons -- especially after having coached the team to their best record in a decade. Just my two cents.

In my view, it is just the opposite due to supply and demand. The stronger the draft, the LESS valuable the picks at the top. This was particularly true with the WR position in the 2014 draft.

I do not think Whaley panicked as such. Farmer just out negotiated Whaley and Whaley overpaid. I think Whaley could have gotten Sammy for less given the market set the previous year when Miami traded less to move up more slots. I will not ask Whaley to negotiate my next car purchase. Having said the above, I still like Sammy and having him on the team. I cannot hold what Whaley did against Sammy.

what are chances Hughes gives Bills hometown discount ??
Peter replied to RCOHEN13's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I hope that he signs as well. I presume there will be at least one team out there that will offer a lot. But . . . I also presume that teams will realize that, although he is very good, his production is impacted (at least in part) by the guys that line up beside him. -
Does Mario's strip fumble count as a sack?

You are correct sir. Mario is under appreciated for just how much of a team guy he is. I am glad that he is on our team. -
The Possibly Intriguing QB Trade Market
Peter replied to Bills Fan since '64's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with your point about upgrading the offensive line. It is mostly a matter of upgrading the guard position. An upgraded offensive line would help EJ, Kyle, or whoever is the QB. -
Mel Kiper: No franchise QBs in 2015 draft
Peter replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would not draft Jameis. I do not think that he is nearly as good as he is made out to be. I also think that he has other issues. If there is not franchise QB (which we never would be able to get in the draft in any event), I would rather see what is out there in terms of free agents and continute to develop EJ. EJ is not where he needs to be, but we know he is a good teammate, is never going to get in trouble, and I still think that he has room to grow. I also think that there will be better QBs available in free agency than anything that Jameis would be able to give us in the near term. -
I have not decided how interested I am in any of the potential free agent (or otherwise available) QBs, but let's just say someone like Bradford, Kapaernick, Cam Newton etc. is available: if you are a good QB looking for a team, I would have to think that the Bills with all of the talent we have elsewhere would love to play for the Bills -- provided the Bills upgrade the guard position. The Bills would be a great destination for any QB looking for a team where he can succeed and get paid.

Sanctimonious holier than thou Sullivan and sycophants.
Peter replied to TC in St. Louis's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It would have been a nice quote if he had written it on draft day. As for Sammy, I have posted that I really like the kid and am happy that he is on the Bills, but Doug Whaley got schooled in the art of negotiation by Farmer. We gave up far more than the Dolphins did the year before and the Dolphins had to move up more spots. The Dolphins traded their 12th and 42nd picks in the 2013 draft to move up from 12 to 3 (9 spots). The outer limits of the market had been set with that trade. There was no reason to pay more especially with the WR talent in the draft. Instead of paying attention to the market, we traded number 9 (2014), a first (2015), and a fourth (2015) to move up 5 spots. People have disagreed with me, but I think that Farmer played Whaley when he put him on hold to "take another call." If Jerry Sullivan wanted to impress us with his wisdom, he could have written something like the above the day after the draft. As for Sammy, I like the kid and am not going to hold Whaley's bad negotiating skills against him. Sammy seems like a good kid and has lots of talent. He also was a Bills fan before he was ever drafted by the Bills. -

Wasn't reviewed? Even the guys in NYC got it wrong. -
The refs in this game were among the worst that I have seen Pereira is an apologist for them. If he were 1% as critical of these refs as he was of the replacements, his head would have exploded (as did mine). It was not just that they were bad, they were bad only toward one team and at critical times. The phantom call on Robey. The two flags on huge INT returns. The phantom call on Gilmore that led to the flag on Hughes because he was so hot about it. The no call on a head but on Smith. These were all pretty much at critical times. I obviously cannot say with any certainty that we would have won the game without these mistakes. Nevertheless, I can say with 100% certainty that we clearly had a fighting chance. Even with the BS calls, we showed that we clearly belong on the same field as Denver. I actually thought that we started out with some creative play calling that surprised Denver. Once we got behind, we started to play catch up and Denver's D was able to tee off on us. The game changed because of these horrendous officials. Just my two cents.

The Demise of the Running Quarterback?
Peter replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills are the only team in the NFL that would be better off with Russell Wilson? There is no reason to be nasty. I loved Russell at Wisconsin and wish the Bills would have drafted him. The fact remains that every team had the opportunity to draft him at least twice and some three times. Morevover, in that draft five QBs were taken ahead of him. Only one (as it turns out) deserved to be (Andrew Luck). As to your comment that there were not too many teams with our QB situation, keep in mind that the team with arguably the best QB in the NFL drafted Jimmy Garoppolo in the second round with pick 62 in the 2014 draft -- 13 spots ahead of where the Seahawks picked Russell Wilson with the 75 pick in the draft in the third round in the 2012 draft. In other words, if talent evaluators had put the proper draft grade on Russell Wilson, even teams with future HOF QBs would have taken him much higher than he was taken. Certainly teams (the vast majority) who do not have future HOF QBs would have done so. -
I have not closed the book on EJ. He does have talent. He is a great kid and teammate. I understand he is working hard. With any luck, he gets the time he needs to max out on his talent. I have no idea what his ceiling might be, but I honestly believe that he will improve and may end up being what we all had hoped he will be.

The Demise of the Running Quarterback?
Peter replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Colin Kaepernick, RGIII, and Cam Newton are among the correct answers to the following trivia question: Name three QBs with resepect to whom certain people on this board became apoplectic that the Bills did not draft or otherwise go out and get. Other correct answers include: Jimmy Clausen, Nick Foles, Ryan Nassib, John Skelton, . . . . As I sit here, I can only think of a handful of QBs that I would have loved the Bills to have drafted in the last couple of years: Andrew Luck (there was no way the Bills would have been able to get him in the draft or by trade) Russell Wilson (every team in the NFL passed over him at least twice and some three times). Being a successful QB is perhaps the most difficult thing to do in team sports. The league has been littered with guys that were drafted highly who never amounted to anything (poster child - Leaf). Pittsburgh plucking Big Ben away from us set us back. I wonder where we would have been and be if we had been able to pick Big Ben, or drafted Aaron Rodgers, or got lucky in the 6th round with a guy like Tom Brady.
