I’m well aware. This quote is relevant to the post about the conditions in Michigan and the potential for Michigan to have to implement the care measures spelled out in the letter. If I wanted to be political about it, I would have quoted the entire interview given on Fox News and offered my own editorial position as well, but much of that had nothing to do with Michigan in particular. I get that ANY reference to federal leadership or lack thereof may trigger some who take ANY critique of our response during this crisis as an attack. I disagree. I think it’s important to point out faults and hold our elected leaders responsible ESPECIALLY at times like this. If a mod wants to delete my post, fine.

It’s not like we didn’t know all this well in advance. Perhaps the single greatest case of malpractice in history.

Wow. That was depressing. The richest country in the history of the universe and that’s the reality for the heroes on the front lines of this crisis. It’s beyond shameful. We have a TON of reckoning to do moving forward.

Good point about the timing and, while it’s too late for some areas, this can really benefit areas that are still ahead of the curve. I read somewhere that Nike is gonna produce PPE but I don’t know if that’s true or not.

This concept put forth by Glen Beck, Dan Patrick and others that the “economy” is “America” and “America” is the “economy” is strange. The economy will recover like it always has. I wish I could say the same for people with upper respiratory infections.

What was it that Mr. Wolf said in ‘Pulp Fiction?’ It was a euphemism for not counting the chickens before they hatch.

I wonder if the situation in Mississippi, where the governor signed an executive order superseding local authorities’ ability to close businesses, will be a microcosm of a federal order to do the same nationally in a few weeks.

Better to be damned if you don’t in this case. Why this isn’t glaringly obvious to everyone is beyond comprehension. It is willful ignorance.

We have needed this national plan for over two months. If it hasn’t happened by now with all we know and see, I have no illusions it’s gonna happen at all. This is up to 50 governors to implement; 50 separate entities. Shameful.

I appreciate the maybe far more than “there has to be.” I tend to find applied mathematical analysis interesting, though. The second sentence is too funny! Years ago there was a southern American comedian of Asian descent, perhaps S. Korea, and he possessed very sharply defined Asian facial features. And when he started his routine people began laughing immediately because he delivered it in a classic southern drawl, which was his natural accent. He just looked at the audience and said in that deep southern drawl, “It’s kinda weird, ain’t it”, which made people laugh all the more.

Except that I heard a certain someone at yesterday’s White House briefing make that comparison and using that same false equivalency in justifying policy moving forward.

Trump said today that he wants the country opened by Easter. Well, that’s that.

I advocate any and all protective measures available for everybody. Balancing? Right now the scale is so heavy on the one side that attempting to balance that scale just isn’t feasible currently. The economy will recover. Once dead, always dead.

I can’t say 12 weeks or 12 months, but until we see that curve start flattening as opposed to the near vertical line currently, we need to do exactly as you said; protection and isolation. Erring on the side of public safety is a no brainer. It’s appalling that any other line of thought is being considered. Absolutely, the bottom earners will be most impacted as is always the case. But those bottom earners aren’t driving policy that may end up seriously jeopardizing the public safety.

Are these doctors currently on the federal task force? Please feel free to cite them as I’d be interested. I’ve heard lots of varying “opinions” like the one from Richard A. Epstein, a conservative economist with the Hoover Institution, who claimed there would be only 500 deaths in the US due to the virus (we surpassed that yesterday). He’s not alone with these baseless claims, either. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about, but he’s not alone. And that’s concerning when that’s the line of thinking that seems to be guiding policy options moving forward.

Well, as I read this morning’s tweets, there is absolutely no hope for a mass, centralized federal response to the problem. We have adopted the idea that the cure is worse than the problem and people need to get back to work. Doesn’t matter that this is counter to what every medical adviser says. The ears are closed to that advice and have given way to advice from that of economic advisers instead. I’m willing to bet that every one of those advisers has access to the best private medical care available, including ventilators should they or their families need them.

She should be arrested for knowingly endangering the public health. She is a danger to society. Literally.

That’s what’s been needed the entire time; a coherent national containment strategy with the full force of the federal governments resources. The federal government is the ONLY entity in the world that is capable of meeting the sheer logistical challenge involved.
