Pretty much this. I think 1-3 of those guys will be gone by the time we pick. Most likely Thomas and Franklin are gone imo. Leggettes combine/pro day could push him up too. Is it worth trading up for one of them? Or sit and take Mitchell? Is he ok trading up like we did last season for one of them. Those 3 are legit speedsters, while Mitchell is not.

I know how fast he is. They aren’t the same kind of speed. Say he’s a 4.29 guy….. don’t say he’s Tyreek. He’s not. His burst and change of direction is nowhere near Tyreeks. Using 40 times from 8 years ago is odd btw.

And if the DL flops- the defense fails even worse. No pressure = game over. Defensive success is predicated on pressure on the QB more than anything else by a wide margin. you say that we can just sign a guy like Lawson……I say you just sign a guy like Jordan Poyer.

We have very good LBs and Corners- Poyer may be cut- but he hasn’t been yet. Right now the only hole in the back 7 is at FS. WR and DL

You don’t see how someone could think that saying the defense “revolves around” safeties = safeties are the most important ….. what does revolves around mean if not meaning it’s the focal point of the defense. Focal point = most important? No? 🤷🏻‍♂️ I think we just disagree in thinking that we need to have elite players at safety and should invest higher picks into the position. We need smart and versatile players that understand the defense and know how to communicate. I do agree that good safety play is important in McDs defense. More so than in other defenses. i just really believe in McDs ability to coach up DBs. He turned a 4 rd pick into an all pro in Taron. A 2M a year safety into all pro in Poyer. A upper middle priced safety into an all pro (Hyde). A 6th round pick into a solid CB2 (Benford). An undrafted CB and a 7th rd CB into solid depth corners (Levi and Benford). A first rd pick into an all pro (white). And Douglas has excelled and is getting even better under his tutelage. I think his only failure to date has been Elam. looking at past offseasons, many teams have been able to add starter quality safeties at bargain prices. Free agent safeties should see Buffalo as an ideal landing spot based on McDs coaching Considering our cap situation for the next 5 years isn’t ideal, landing players at premium positions in the draft would be my ideal way to build the team going forward. If we were to draft a safety in rd 3, I would understand the pick (depending on the player), I just don’t know if it would be the best use of resources due to McDs ability to coach players up and the price tags on premium positions

Didn’t take long- the defense revolves around the safeties…… no- it doesn’t. It revolves around great DL play. I get what you’re saying- It’ll be tough to find a bigger backer of the Poyer and Hyde tandem than me. I know and appreciate how important they are. I also know that it didn’t take top 100 picks or massive contracts to acquire and groom them. Poyer was a jag that McD turned into a star. Hyde was a decent investment but was no all pro until McD got him. Spending resources properly is more important than ever and having DL on rookie deals. When we miss on the DL signings and picks- our defense suffers. When we don’t have a pass rush- our defense is nothing vs good offenses (aka playoff teams). agree to disagree

“S is more important that pass rush”- said nobody ever except you right now I don’t care what resources we’ve used in the past. I care about what we will have on the field in 2024z. Right now, we have 1 DT. We also have one (legit) S. It’s much easier to get good S play for pennies and lesser draft capital than it is to get the same for DL. McD had lots of success with aging Kurt Coleman, Thomas Decoud, Tre Boston and aging Roman Harper. He doesn’t “need” stars at safety. He’s capable of turning average players in solid pieces. Drafting Polk in rd 2 is my dream this year

I remember how great our D was with Poyer and Hyde in 2020 when we had a crappy DL. I agree that S is important in McDs system- but McD is also pretty good at making chicken salad out of chicken s*** at the position. The same cannot be said for the DL. if we go S first, I think we’ll regret it

He was “presumed” to be on the roster? Presumed by whom? I never thought we were going to keep 4 RBs. Would have been a mistake just like keeping Hines will be a burden to our roster and cap. I won’t underestimate what Beanes “word” is worth. It does mean a lot. But I stand on keeping him and paying him anything does nothing but hurt this team in 2024 agree to disagree

We went into the 2023 season with cook, Harris, Murray and Johnson on the active roster?

So 5M and an extra roster spot for a RB….. Keeping him hurts the team. Doesn’t matter how good he is. Speed RB coming off knee reconstruction or w/e he had. 4 RBs- just poor

From what I’ve seen so far, I think Leggette has the most upside and is the guy I’d like most. I also said that about Quinton Johnston last season around this time. As the draft started, Addison and flowers were the WRs wanted most. But so far, Leggette’s physical being is what intrigues me the most. One year of productivity and age are the only cons I’ve seen so far. as of now, I’d be ok with a handful of guys outside of the top 3 that we’ll never be in position to draft. Thomas Jr, Franklin, Walker, worthy and Mitchell are the guys that intrigue me most. Polk is the guy I’d love to get in rd 2- but we’d probably have to trade up from him. Mcconkey is intriguing. I think I’m gonna watch some Brendan Rice tonight
