When Ralph fired Wade Phillips and tried not to pay him, that sullied the Bills' reputation for years, or decades. The NFL is the Never-Forget League. The Pegulas are a much classier combo than Ralph (and they don't employ Lippman, hurray!) and the success of McBeane has transformed the Bill's reputation. The Jets are going to struggle to get competent coaches for years to come. Serves them right, too. It's probably not Gase behind this move. It would be the GM or the owner, since Gase has been around the NFL long enough to know how bad a move this is.

AFC East Rookie Grades, from Gennaro Filice
Utah John replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Jets released their second round pick before the season started. As far as I can remember, the Bills never screwed the pooch anywhere close to that bad, -
Jaguars Give Up 2 home games next year
Utah John replied to plenzmd1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Taxes in the UK might be very high, but on the bright side if a player gets hurt he doesn't have to worry about health insurance. Of course he might need to wait to see a doctor. The arguments Khan is using to justify moving two games a year to London, are eerily like the ones the Bills used to justify playing games in Toronto. What a disaster that was for the Bills, no longer playing in front of rabid home fans in order to play in a silent tomb where no one really cared who won. You don't need to read tea leaves to see the Jags franchise is doomed in Jacksonville. Thank God for the Pegulas. -
It's hard to see the AFCE getting a wild card team, since all the teams in the division play pretty much the same brutal schedule, with a lot of travel and some tough opponents. I think the Bills should be favored to win the division. The main threat is injuries. The Bills were very lucky this past year regarding injuries. Last year the 49ers won four games, and this year they had a 10-point fourth quarter lead in the SB. My point is, Miami. I don't think the Jets are a threat as long as Gase is their coach, but I'm seeing Miami in our rear view mirror, closing the gap. They beat NE in NE in the last regular season game for both team, in a game NE desperately wanted to win. Miami traded a lot of good players, mostly for draft picks, and figured out over the course of the year how to win again. Over the next couple of years, they're going to be getting a lot better, quickly.

Thomas was MVP in 1991, and deserved it. James was never close to deserving that award in any year. I have a similar complaint about Gore getting in. It's not the Hall of Consistently Very Good. What a tough choice, figuring who was better, Troy Polamalu or Ed Reed. Just a pair of great great safeties who happened to play at about the same time. I think Reed was better at playing within the system, while Troy was a cruise missile.

The Mystery of the Missing Screen Plays
Utah John replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I thought from the title that this link was a Hollywood story about a writer having his work stolen, and maybe someone substituting their screen plays for his. That seems to happen more often than the Bills running a screen play. -
This was a good, solid interview. Flutie never really felt wanted or appreciated in Buffalo, particularly in 1999 when he got the Bills to the playoffs and had to watch Rob Johnson play against the Titans. In this interview, he said NOT ONE bad thing about Buffalo or the Bills. So what if he plugged the cereal. He was not a great QB but he was a lot of fun to watch.

There are at least two other former Bills on the Chiefs' squad, Shady McCoy and Reggie Ragland. I haven't heard either of them say a single negative thing about the Bills or Buffalo. McCoy was in a tough spot and things worked out great for him. He was clearly on the way down last year. No team wanted to trade for him due to the high contract cost he had. Cutting him was probably done with his best interest in mind. The Bills didn't expect to be a contender this past year, and letting McCoy pick his new team let him go to a contender, a plan that's worked out brilliantly for him. The Bills handled that situation with class and respect, and I think McCoy appreciated it. It's turned out that McCoy's decline has continued, and this is clearly going to be his last year before he retires. He's not the kind of guy who wants to be a backup, and he's too professional to want to play when he can't play well. Ragland was traded so early in his career and so long ago, and he's turned out to be so unremarkable, that no one seems to care what he thinks about Buffalo.

Chargers moving on from Philip Rivers after 16 years
Utah John replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If he's living in extreme NW Florida, the closest NFL franchise to his home would be New Orleans. It would be ironic if we had the Rivers-Brees contest all over again, but I really don't think NO will do anything with Brees until Brees says he's done. Rivers is a tough sell. He thinks he's still a starting QB and will want to get paid like one, and will not be content to be a backup somewhere. I think he'll end up just sitting until some team that figures it's ready to win right now loses its starting QB to injury, and needs to find the right short-term replacement. -
FOX Sports tabs Devin Singletary RoTY candidate
Utah John replied to Gambit's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Gore had some games early in the season when he was very good, let's not forget. His ability tailed off a lot as the season progressed. I don't know if he got hurt and that affected his play. Daboll should have recognized the shift between Gore and Singletary's abilities, and used DS much more. I agree with the posters. -
Pro Bowl Player Poll--Worst City to Travel To
Utah John replied to Lurker's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Really, who cares what those players say? They don't know very much about any of the cities they go to. -
Pro Bowl Player Poll--Worst City to Travel To
Utah John replied to Lurker's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
New Orleans is a pretty special case. The Superdome is within walking distance of the French Quarter, really just across the street, and across the city there are great things to do. Most cities have stadiums away from the fun part of downtown. If the teams stay near the stadium, they don't have much to do wherever they are. -
Pro Bowl Player Poll--Worst City to Travel To

I wonder if visiting teams usually stay in hotels downtown, or near the airport, or near the stadium. Some of them would probably rather stay in Toronto and take a bus ride to OP on Sunday morning. -
New Orleans Saints in Court
Utah John replied to Mike in Horseheads's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am having trouble imagining what help a football team could possibly be, in dealing with these crimes. Football teams are businesses which are really good at public relations, but not when it comes to covering up crimes. If a priest or someone else in the Church committed a sexual offense, that's a crime, not a public relations challenge. -
Chris Brown article on Bills Draft Needs
Utah John replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We just spent a second round pick on a guy who's right now our backup right guard, because he's not a good right tackle and because our starting right guard is a beast. That's not a bust but isn't what you want from a second round pick. Will the Bills invest even more high picks on an area that played well last year? I would rather see them re-sign Spain and get an upgrade at right tackle in FA. The reason Kittle and Kelce are important is a numbers game. Defenses can account for just so many threats, and they give less attention to others, including TEs. When you have a dominant TE, suddenly there's always someone open because the defense has to do more than it was designed to do. But, great TEs appear to be even rarer than great QBs. The guys with the size and physique to play TE are playing strong forward instead. One thing I like about this past season is that there is a wide variety of what works. The Ravens play three tight ends with a power game. The Titans use a power game to overcome weaknesses in their roster. 180 degrees away you have the Chiefs with their wide-open attack. This is just great, really. Coaches are drafting and acquiring players to fit a certain style, and then adjusting their coaching to fit the players. The good coaches, at least. The Bills are doing that too. -
Another tragedy hits Jeremy White
Utah John replied to Arkady Renko's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tragic events like this put less important things like a playoff game in a much clearer perspective. Tell your loved ones you love them. -
The Bills (Whaley) made a huge mistake giving Dareus that contract. The only choices the Bills had were to allow him to stick around, continue eating cap space every year (and from the looks of it, all the pizza and wings in WNY) -- or to release him and absorb a huge hit in that year -- or to trade him and no one wanted a lazy, fat, complacent, opinionated wise guy at an incredibly high salary. Option 1 was out since he clearly didn't get a seat on McDermott's bus. Option 2 was very unattractive since the Bills were trying to rebuild. Option 3 was a tough sell but apparently a good one, since the Bills found a sucker willing to take a flier on Dareus.

Should season ticket holders protest?
Utah John replied to Rocbillsfan1's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
In the history of Bills clutch losses, most of them were a combination of them getting screwed, and them screwing up. No Goal wouldn't have been a thing for the referees and league to get wrong if the Sabre had body checked Hull instead of trying to poke check him. The Tennessee miracle throwback forward lateral wouldn't have worked if the Bills' cover team had stayed in its lanes. The Bills lost their first SB all on their own, due to partying and drinking in the week leading up to the game. The loss to the Texans was keyed up by the officials failing to enforce the clear, written rules in effect. But the Bills still got outplayed in the second half. If the score had been 20-0 who knows whether the Texans would have been able to come back.
