Fitzpatrick named Texans Starting QB
Utah John replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Fitz and Gailey had a better concept for the offense (disregard the errand runner who was designated the O Coordinator) than EJ and whoever the current O Coordinator is. I think Gailey made Fitz as good as Fitz could ever be. And obviously it wasn't enough. Carrying this further, maybe EJ's problems last year were due as much to the O Coordinator than his own limitations and inexperience. -
Just want to point out there was a Playboy playmate named Kelly Tough. Really.

Why 80% of NFL players are broke 2 yrs after they retire
Utah John replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I recall an article about Ryan Fitzpatrick when he was with the Bills. Apparently lived in a normal house on a normal street in Hamburg. Had cookouts with the neighbors. I guess he did learn a thing or two at Harvard. -
He played great for a year or two, then lost sight of where he fits in the football world. These are the years when he should be coming into his prime, but he can't fit anywhere. He still has the arm strength and physical ability but his ego swamped it.

Van Miller's getting old
Utah John replied to \GoBillsInDallas/'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was on our It's Academic team when I was in high school, and I think the best part was meeting Mr Miller, who was the person who read the questions. -
To Shed Some Light on the whole New Stadium thing ...
Utah John replied to Ronin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Ticket revenues are shared between home and visiting teams. Is there any rational reason why revenues from luxury boxes aren't shared as well? The ratio of the split might be different for luxury boxes, but 100%/0% isn't the only reasonable figure. -
I want Trump for owner and you should too.
Utah John replied to MClem06's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Trump is a low-class spectacle but he's also a good businessman who hires good people to achieve success. Ralph Wilson in contrast was a gentleman who FIRED good people who crossed swords with his daughter, and who tolerated useless bean counters like Littman in key positions in his organization. Thanks Ralph, I hope you're enjoying heaven, now let's see someone who wants to win regardless of loyalty to family and friends. -
Buyer's remorse? Well, kind of. We were in position to take Mack and didn't do so. Watkins will I hope turn out to be great, but I don't think he'll make our offense dominant. With Mack our good defense would become dominant.

CJ Spillers increased role in offense?
Utah John replied to Original Byrd Man's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Spiller is like an exotic sports car. When the car's running perfectly and there are openings in the traffic, it can zoom in and out and get there before anyone else. If there's heavy stop and go traffic, the car's clutch is too finicky to stay with the masses, and the radiator overheats. If there's ANYTHING wrong with the engine, transmission, or tires, fuhgedaboutit. Spiller without good wheels, which unfortunately is most of the time, is a pretty ordinary RB. And unless he's in space, he's no better than your grandfather's Oldsmobile in heavy traffic. -
Bulk is good but you need athleticism also. LT requires quick feet, good balance, power, and bulk. Guards have to be able to run at least 15 yards in order to pull. Tackles need to be able to run sometimes too. RTs are facing a lot of teams who put their premium pass rusher on the defense's left side, simply because a lot of RTs are huge but whatever the opposite of agile is. And they all have to be smart. So this enormous line sounds great, but this isn't a game of just falling forward onto the D lineman. (Case in point, Eric Pears who is a huge guy too.) Let's see if these guys can really play.

Bills Release WR Brandon Kaufman.
Utah John replied to Braedenstearns's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Letting him go now looks like a gift to Kaufman, who wasn't likely to make the team at TE and sure wasn't going to at WR. This gives him a chance at least of finding another team. -
Does anyone know whether any Bills have Parker as their agent, who the Bills haven't had a hard time re-signing? After Jason Peters and Byrd, it seems like Parker's goal in life is to get the really good Bills players he represents, out of Buffalo.

Gregg Easterbrook on the Watkins Pick
Utah John replied to quinnearlysghost88's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm happy with the Watkins pick, but I think Mack would have been better. The Bills D-line is not going to be as good as it was last year, and a strong LB crew would have made up the difference. (Williams*2 will be fine, but Dareus is going to have another loopy year after his recent arrest, and there's no good RDE on the roster.) I think Mack is going to be as good on defense as Watkins will be on offense. -
Walt Patulski (#1 overall pick). Al Cowlings. Tom Cousineau.

Bills' biggest need - All-around DE
Utah John replied to ChanOverChin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So why didn't the Bills re-sign Carrington? He was a 3rd round pick and played hard for the Bills. Apparently impressed the coaches. The Bills didn't seem to try very hard to keep him on board. -
[closed]QB Kenny Guiton signs undrafted with Bills
Utah John replied to Cson76's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Boy, 9 or 10 months and memories fade. Tuel looked GREAT in training camp last summer and the Bills used a roster spot to keep him. Other teams also saw how good he looked, and the risk was that if he was cut he would be picked up by some other team before the Bills could sign him to the practice squad. Tuel proceeded to look OK in his only serious game action, against KC, until his crushing stupid pick six cost us the game (and may have saved another draft pick from the cost to get Sammy Watkins, FWIW). The point being, Tuel is not the no-talent loser some people regard him as. As for Guiton, great, he sounds like a good addition. If he beats out Tuel, fine with me. That will mean Guiton has pretty good skills to add to the team. -
WR Stevie Johnson traded to San Francisco 49ers
Utah John replied to FluffHead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's about cash. Johnson was going to cost a lot if he was on the team this year. The Bills need the money to pay Spiller and Watkins. -
I think you're right about trades on the second day, and one move I expect to see is Stevie Johnson packaged and shipped. The Bills just gave up three picks for Watkins, a seventh rounder for Williams, and a second and third last year for two more receivers. Johnson could be a good pickup for a team that needs a good #2 or a really good slot receiver to round out its offense.

The key roadblock to either the Green Bay model or the former owners model is that the current owners have to approve all sales of teams. That's a very exclusive club and the guys in it want to bring in more people like themselves. They also don't like the GB model because if all the other clubs were owned by cities, they'd never be able to blackmail their own cities by threatening to move if they don't get new stadiums.

There's an expression that there's no such thing as bad publicity. I think that expression might need to be retired.

Is Stevie expendable now that we got Williams?
Utah John replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Stevie Johnson might be a bit of a flake but he's getting better and more matured. But when I read the interviews with Mike Williams, he comes across as a totally immature jerk. He was speaking about his former and current coach, and called him Marrone, and talked about how Marrone and he both made mistakes, like Williams is some equal to Marrone. Sorry buddy, you might acknowledge you have some growing up to do, but you're more correct about that than you realize. Johnson might indeed be on the way out, but Williams gets really expensive after this year, and I'll bet a nickel he wears out his welcome in the locker room and on the field this year.
