  1. NFL free agency moves fast but it is only day 2 of the official signing period. There are still plenty of teams with plenty of cap space that need corners and LB's. So I wouldn't say that the market has dried up just yet on these players. But if by next Wednesday these players are still out on the market then clearly the market has passed them up. Gaines I think will be fine I suspect by Monday he is signed. Brown could go either way. I wouldn't mind seeing Brown back on an affordable deal. But Gaines back on a modest deal would be great. The less holes going into the draft the better.
  2. I think that Whaley no matter what was put in a bad spot with the hiring of Rex. The Bills had a defensive unit perfect for a 4-3 system and they forced in Rex who as good a defense coach as he was simply was jamming a square peg into a round hole. So Whaley tried to draft players (Shaq, Ragland, and Washington) to suit Rex's scheme but Rex was gone one year later. So McD and Beane had decided to switch back to the 4-3 and Whaley's last draft class was out of place. Whaley's drafts from 2013-2015 weren't terrible a lot of players from those draft classes are highly productive players in the league (which proves that they were talented players) sure there were some busts (EJ, Cyrus) but overall I thought they weren't bad not good but not as awful as a lot of people thought.
  3. Had they kept Schwartz and promoted him to head coach and hired Roman to coordinate the offense (and made the same personnel decisions on offense which is doubtful unless Roman made most of those decisions) then that 2015 team could have been special even if Mario fell apart on the team (Which might not have happened as rapidly if he was in the right scheme.) They broke apart a top defensive unit in the league with all the pieces in place to implement a new scheme not suited for the talent. They then tried to rebuild it with a fresh draft class and it didn't work. It is unfortunate such an infusion of offensive talent begat such an exedous of defensive talent.
  4. I think Beane knows that most of his draft capital is probably going to go towards picking up a QB. What little is left will likely be spent on the offensive line (Right side is a complete mess) or receiver (which is right now Benjamin and the hope Zay Jones could turn it around.) I think Lawson and Hughes won't command much on the trade market and trading Hughes won't offer much cap relief. Not to mention Jerry Hughes had a decent year least year. He wasn't fantastic but he was decent. Hughes was the best defender against the run and still delivered a good amount of QB pressures. Teams also were running over this team pretty bad the second half of the year. So a pass rushers numbers are going to dip when teams just run all over the defense (less attempts to get a sack.)
  5. What a fantastic deal, Beane might have enough cap space to sign another solid starter and plug one last hole before going into the draft.
  6. Good moves, McCaron is a decent QB. Star and Murphy are quality players who fill some needs, Vonta Davis at the price he was acquired for is a good signing too. Not too thrilled at the Ivory signing at the price either but no GM is perfect. If Beane could find a solid starter at either RG, LB, or Nickle corner I would call this already successful off-season a massive success.
  7. I love this signing. Considering the remaining QB's available McCarron is by far the best and he is a decent stop gap bridge QB probably attained at a good price. My main issue with McCarron before free agency was the large sum of money I thought he would command. But the market came to the Bills and it paid off.
  8. The Jets had 90 million in cap space, you couldn't expect them to sit on their hands, their defense should be competitive if they can find a decent pass rusher (I suspect they will spend pick 5 on a pass rusher) and some more D-line help they might have a shot at a top 10 defense. Their offense needs a lot of work and they won't be able to fill all their needs despite an extra 2nd round pick and all their cap space.
  9. I hated the idea of McCarron when it looked like it would take Mike Glennon type money to sign him. But on a more modest deal McCarron would be a great option.
  10. Offensive skill positions probably but 2 out of the top 3 non-QB needs for the Bills on offense are along the O-line (RT and RG) so even if the unsettled QB need impacts their ability to address WR they still have plenty of defensive needs (LB, Pass rush, nickel CB.) So yes WR might be hard to fill but I suspect that the team has plenty of other ways to go in free agency if that is a big holdup.
  11. He was graded out as one of the best run defenders on the team and is durable. Not to mention while his sack numbers have gone down in recent years his QB hurries and hits haven't dipped that much, so cutting him kills whatever little pass rush is left on this team. I wouldn't be shocked if this team cut Hughes but given the limited cap savings and the lack of demand trade wise I think they keep Hughes or restructure him.
  12. Nickle corner is a huge need, with teams playing nickel 50-60% of the time this team can't afford not to find a decent Nickle back.
  13. It all depends on cost and guarantee (Although terms not being released is generally a good sign.) At 5-6 million per with a guarantee around 12 million I love this deal as it is exactly what this team needed at that position and at a good cost. At 7 million around 15-16 guaranteed (which I suspect it is around) I think it is an OK deal, a bit of an overpay but a respected veteran player that fills a massive need. Much more than 7 million and close to 20 million guaranteed then I don't like this deal as it is too big of an overpay.
  14. Great news, honestly I can't imagine it's at a crazy cost and even with Star in the fold the team needs more at DT, right now Star is the run stuffing anchor, the team doesn't have a whole lot behind Star so adding Kyle adds at the very worst a high end rotational player and at best an above average DT to plug in for one more season while a rookie learns the ropes. Not sure Washington is going to be anything more than camp fodder (Washington should be brought into camp, it couldn't hurt to have him compete for the 4th DT spot.) But with Star signed and Kyle back the team's need at DT is diminished. I suspect that depending on what they do trade up wise the Bills will draft a DT between rounds 2-4 since depth and age is still a concern. I also think Kyle's presence in the locker room is fantastic and a plus.
  15. It's all possible at this point, I think the Beane is clearly building a long-term contender. He is going to make a big play for a QB this year and in 2019 with the massive amount of cap space and a system and coach 2 years in place. By that point the roster will be fully turned over towards the guys McD and Beane want as well. They will have 2 draft classes brought in and a 3rd on the way. They can see where the holes on the roster are and fill them in via free agency. Although I think that Hughes might stay since he seems to be a respected veteran in the locker room and isn't a bad player at all. But once again it seems like Beane is just willing to clear house.
  16. I like it, you traded Tyrod and Glenn that freed up some considerable cap space and now they can spend a bit more and they need one more slot CB since nickel is now most teams primary defensive alignments.
  17. Correct me if I am wrong but is there any Watkins dead money on the books for 2018? He was on the last year of his deal and he was traded before the 2017 season started, I think the big dead cap money is coming from Dareus, Glenn, Taylor, and Wood mostly.
  18. You have to throw out the draft pick formula when it comes to QB's. The Redskins gave up a high second-round pick (39th overall), pick 6, and 2 future 1st round picks to get pick number 2. In no sane world is that sensible under the points system. The Dolphin traded from pick 12 to 3 to pick up Dion Jordan and all it cost Miami was the 42nd pick. When QB's are being bid on you are going to pay up the ass. Fortunately for Buffalo they now have the most draft capital of any team outside of the Browns.
  19. Trubinsky, Goff, Wentz, and RGIII are the QB's that teams have traded up into the top 4 for. Out of those QB's the jury is still out on Trubinsky, Goff and Wentz have a lot of promise to be top 10-5 QB's in the league, and RGIII had a great rookie season before injuries ruined his career. Overall I would say that trading for one of the top QB's in the top 5 is a winning proposition. Just look at the QB's that have gone in the top 5 since 2008, it's probably the highest percentage way to land a top QB. 2017- Trubinsky 2016- Goff and Wentz 2015- Jamis Winston and Mariota 2014- Blake Bortles 2013- No QB's taken top 5 2012- Andrew Luck and RGIII 2011- Cam Newton 2010- Sam Bradford 2009- Matthew Stafford and Mark Sanchez 2008- Matt Ryan There are some busts and some QB's the jury is still out on but Ryan, Stafford, Newton, Luck, Winston, Mariota, Goff, and Wentz are all QB's I would love to have. Even RGIII started out his career great until injury completely derailed his career and Borltes was seen as a huge reach when he was taken. Even Sam Bradford was a pretty good QB when healthy. So looking at that bust rate I would trade up for a QB. The Bills have 5 picks in the top 65 and a desperate need for a QB, this is the year to make a big play.
  20. I don't think they would be interested in anything over 6 million. Even 6 million would be steep. I think McD would likely target him around 5 million per which would be right in line with his production level.
  21. If the price was right this could be a very good signing. Familiar with the city and is still fairly young (Will be 29 by seasons end) and only has 6 years experience in the league so for a typical 29 year old he has less wear and tear. The Bills need linebackers badly so any move to address that position is a good idea.
  22. I am not a big Foles fan, I think that since Andy Reid the Eagles have made QB's look much better than what they are. Foles, Kolb, and even Mark Sanchez and other backups have looked way better in Philly than they have elsewhere. Even Vick looked to be a much better passer when he was in Philly those first few years. I find it hard to buy into a guy like Foles on the Bills. I think that this team with the Ammo that they have will likely need to make a big play for a QB in the draft.
  23. From what I have seen on Sporttrac if they cut Glenn this season they only save 3.35 million on the 2018 cap. If the team cuts him in 2019 they save 6 million. So the Bills could cut Glenn in 2018 they save 3.35 million in 2018 and 6.5 million in 2019 vs. cutting him in 2019. So the question you have to ask is cutting Glenn in 2018 worth 9 million in cap space spread across 2 seasons (With only 3ish million coming right away?) I think given that Glenn is a young player at a premium position the team is much better off trying to see if he can return from injury in 2018 (esp if you have a rookie QB, protection will be key.) Now if the Bills were to trade him they do save a bit more in 2018 (4.8 million) which could honestly be a bit more attractive. But unless the Giants or another trade up partner wants Glenn as a throw-in, I don't see any significant offer coming in for him.
  24. I actually don't think he was holding the offense back. But I don't think he was enhancing the offensive talent. Low turnovers (smart play mixed with conservative play), lots of plays made with his legs, and a big arm that made some throws once in a while were all positives that he brought to the table. But the fact that he couldn't work out of the pocket consistently and his too often conservative nature did have a negative impact on the offense. Good QB's enhance the play of the talent around them. Granted, there is only so much a QB can do (Look Tom Brady from 2006 to 2007 and it is clear that a QB is impacted by the talent around them) but a great QB will maximize the talent level around them. Tyrod to me was neutral. With great talent around him and a good scheme, he will get the offense to play to their talent level. Which isn't bad and that's better than a lot of teams get out of the QB but unless you have a completely stacked roster around him (which is hard to sustain) he just isn't going to make you a consistent contender.
  25. Pass on Foles, trade up for a young QB. I think Foles works in Philly's QB friendly system. Since McNabb they have always made QB's look better than what they are, Kolb, Foles, and even backups like Mark Sanchez looked better on the Eagles than they did on any other team. Foles had one hell of a run but I don't think he would be the right guy for this team. You have the ammo trade up for a rookie.
