well, as you pointed out, they had years of misalignment with the staff and FO. Hiring Schoen was the first mistake. He had done nothing of note other than be in the building with Beane. I have no doubt at all that they hired Daboll because they thought he could work some magic with him, as they felt he did with Allen (who was felt to be a raw prospect).

This was predictable error on their part. Everyone could see how limited Jones was--even in their "playoff year", where they went 3-4-1 after the bye. 15 passing TDs, 3200 yards (a good season, for him). They were bereft of talent on Offense. Sticking with Jones could only result in the prolonged death that team is dying. If the owners of the Giants didn't think Daboll "made" Josh Allen, do they hire him in the first place? They certainly would not have kept Jones unless they believed Daboll could "make" him too.

turns out, he's not... either way, nowadays, this gets in writing as a routine. there is no need for wink wink deals anymore. these kids are paid entertainers, getting a quote up front. it's how recruiting works now.

This kid's story makes no sense. This is the NIL era. Money is offered, agreements signed---there's no curtain to hide behind anymore. An assistant coach isn't the entity that will be paying this kid, so claiming he made the offer is dumb. Who is this kid's agent? Cam Newton's dad? NIL is an agreement between the player and the payer, i.e.: a company (as their spokesperson), an organization (boosters) or individuals). No agent would even listen to a "verbal agreement".
