RD 2, Pick #41: OT Cordy Glenn - Georgia
vincec replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I said that "I thought Hairston showed quite a bit of promise". Not that he was a solid LT. I think the odds are much better that Hairston, with a year of experience and offseason conditioning, is a better player this season that Glenn coming in cold as a rookie. If you don't get that then I don't know what else to tell you. -

I'm not expert so we'll see, but I think it's a lot to ask of a rookie to come in a start at LT in the NFL. Plus I think you may be selling Hairston short. I thought he showed quite a bit of promise himself last season. -
So What are the Weakest Links, post-draft
vincec replied to Geno Smith's Arm's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Only because he is one of the weak links. QB- Statistically and in regards to wins & losses, he is a journeyman QB. Journeyman QBs RARELY win championships. WR- Still need the guy who's "not covered when he's covered" + another speed guy TE- currently no big play potential LB- Jury's out on Morrison and Sheppard, IMO. Drafted players mostly for depth not starters. -
McKelvin's biggest problem is located between his shoulders and his head, since he appears incapable of turning his neck to find the ball when it is thrown to his receiver. If he could just remove the bolts and free up his neck he would be a very good cover man because he is usually in good position.

It's a good pick. LT, RT or G, there should be a spot for him on the line in a year or two. He's the developmental guy that Buddy was looking for. It looks like it's Hairston's show next season. -
Drafting a safety with the top pick would be something I would expect from Dick Jauron, not Buddy Nix.

Just the fact that this thread exists shows too much disrespect to George Wilson for my taste. The guy was having a pro-bowl type year before he got hurt and now people are proposing to use the Bills top pick on his replacement? Is this guy really THAT good?
-
The fact that he is a bad commentator has nothing to do with his ability (or not) to coach. Bill Walsh was a terrible commentator while guys like Lee Corso are very good ones.

I'm surprised to see so many Cs. Any draft where you pickup 3 solid starters is a very good draft. I don't think too many other NFL teams did better than that. It's a B... at least. BTW- Maybin and Lankster are currently depth players for the Jets, so 5 players still in the league including 3 starters out of 8 picks.
-
Elite pickup at an area of need. Not a franchise changer like Reggie White was (even though they paid him like one) but definitely helps Buffalo's credibility. Along with Wanny, he should help make the Bills D more tolerable to watch this season. In the end he's only one player, and not even the most important player on the team (QB), so don't expect miracles from him, just championship level play at LDE.

name your top 3 buffalo rasputins
vincec replied to loserlovers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I still give that to the '85 Bears D. That Raven's D showed up big in the playoffs and Super Bowl but it was Kerry Collins... -
Personally, I would put QB at P2 as well but it doesn't seem like a high priority for the Bills. Seems strange to me that you could be satisfied with a Fitz and Thigpen as your top two QBs but that appears to be the case. If I'm not mistaken you also have CB as a P2, no? Not to sure about that.

The best is that the broadcaster keeps talking like everything is ok.

 That was priceless. He was moving his legs alright.

The key difference, IMHO, is that the Bills seem intent on replacing Bell. Bell has frequently been in Gailey's doghouse while Nix talks about Bell's durability and drafting LTs. If Bell stayed here and the Bills drafted a new LT in the top couple of picks then there would be 3 possible candidates for starting LT and there would be a realistic chance of him not getting to "showcase his abilities". I think that Bell just decided that he was better off somewhere else where he was basically guaranteed to start rather that battling for the job in Buffalo.

Actually, according to the article Sapp's average monthly income is $115,881. I didn't make that in 2009 and 2010 combined and I didn't have to declare bankruptcy.
-
Obviously you can't do a straight average for the overall GPA. If you did it like that you'd have to get an elite NFL player in every round to get an A for the overall draft, which is unrealistic. Based on the way you're grading things I suspect that 90% of the teams in the league would be between F and C- for every draft they've every had.

A lot of defense is instinct and reacting on the fly to what the opposing team is doing. On offense things are more scripted so it's much better suited to a player like Jasper with limited experience. OT requires much more technique than OG so I think that the Bills got it right. If Jasper has any chance to make it then it will be at OG.

Greg Williams ...caught on tape....
vincec replied to benderbender's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm sure that all of this is not that unusual. I knew high school coaches who said similar things to their players. I think that every coach needs to decide what his/her message and legacy is going to be to his players and the game. Does he want to be remembered as a teacher, mentor and leader or as a win at all costs fanatic who has limited perspective about life. I think of the way coaches like John Wooden, Red Auerbach and even Marv Levy ("don't play dumb, don't play dirty") are talked about by their former players. I wonder how many players will look back in 20 years and think of how Gregg Williams positively influenced their lives? -

Nice. The obvious difference being that at Nuremberg, the defendants were shown to have committed the crimes and then said that they were just following orders whereas here it can't really be shown that anyone deliberately injured an opposing player (for the bounty or for any other reason). I think that if you could show that someone deliberately injured an opposing player he would be severely punished and saying that his coach told him to do so would not get him out of it. -
Thanks. I think that Nucci is going to hook me up. If something falls through I'll message you.

Thanks!

I know. But the game seems to have been forgotten. Not even a clip on YouTube except for when Montana got KO'd. Didn't the Bills rush for over 400 yards? And the only clip is on the opposing QB? Funny.

I have been trying to find video highlights or extended statistics/recap for this game for some time now with no luck. Does anybody have any leads on where I might find something? Thanks!
