I could care less who won the series, unlike last year when I rooted hard for Detroit to beat LA mostly because I hated Kobe. This time I had no attachment to either team. It was just obvious that one team was healthy and the other team wasn't even close to healthy. And still the series went seven. You do the math. And if you're looking for excuses, how about Sheed blaming the NBA and the refs for the fact that the series went seven in the first place?

Bingo. The Pistons played well, but if you make Ben Wallace play on one leg and Rip Hamilton unable to take two steps without searing pain, I'm pretty sure the series goes the other way.

Not to bust on Fergy because I love the guy and I'm pulling for him all the way, but it seems to me that maybe the Bills could have done better by him by pushing the NFL to install outsized 30-second clocks instead of switching to red helmets.

Me too. I got to college in the fall of '87 immediately following the 8-win three-year stretch. My roommates gave me so much stojan. By the next year they weren't laughing anymore.

Whoops, you're right. That was also the game where Tim McKyer said "The Bills without Jim Kelly are like a hand without a thumb." Oops. Two weeks later, in the divisional round, McKyer said "I challenge Jim Kelly to throw my way," and on the first drive of the game Kelly beat McKyer with a TD to Lofton. So much yapping out of the Dolphins back then. But Steve Tasker had the ultimate response after one of those games: "Don't write a check with your mouth that your body can't cash."

I'm not sure he deserves to be on the Wall but I would not complain if he was. It wasn't like he played just that one game. He led an incredible comeback against the Rams on MNF in 1989 not once but twice in the last two minutes -- after he led what appeared to be the game-winning TD drive, Everett hit Flipper Anderson with something like an 80-yard TD pass to put the Rams ahead, and Frank calmly led the Bills back down the field for the winning TD with something like 16 seconds left. He also won playoff games against the Dolphins in 1991 and the Steelers (in Pittsburgh) in 1993 with Kelly on the shelf. A very good case can be made for saying that the Bills wouldn't even have gone to TWO straight Super Bowls had Reich not been around. If we'd had a pedestrian backup in 1990 and 1992, we might have only gone to SBs XXVI and XXVIII. I think there is also something to be said for what a pure class act he was. As well as he played in his limited engagements and as popular as he was with the fans (remember that infamous D&C poll?), he never said anything other than "I'm just keeping the seat warm for Jim," and he never once intimated a desire to go elsewhere a la the Scott Mitchells of the world.
