McDermott - "Still looking for that other safety"
HappyDays replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
Guys like Hamilton and Reed are rare talents where the cerebral traits match the athletic traits, which is what made them 1st round picks. Starks was known for his instincts too, of course it remains to be seen how good he is in the NFL. Hyde and Poyer were not premium talents but they gave us elite safety play. That was my point. -

Hancock started on the Buckeyes Nat Championship team. I don't think the moment would be too big for him. Is his game ready to start? That's for the coaches to get him there. I really like his instincts and athleticism though. Just needs experience. The secondary was rough last year. And looks pretty bad outside of Benford right now. One thing noone is talking about is losing our secondary coach after the 2023 season. John Butler. He was good. And left because he wasn't given the DC job. Babich has definitely not done much. I think Butler had a lot more experience. Losing him as secondary coach maybe a bigger deal then anyone knows. -
If you are cutting Hamlin, do it now...

3 guys made mistakes on the play that all contributed to the long TD. Buffalo Joe probably the most crucial one -
I don’t disagree and I also do disagree. Allen put up an MVP season with largely a lesser group last season. I’ll take what they have on the roster this year over last. And that should include (hopefully) a much bigger year from Kincaid.

Jordan Hancock. Give him a look. I think he makes the defense more multiple. -
Joe B is at camp every day and has been reporting on it regularly since it started. He's not making stuff up about Moore's performance in practice.

I think Starks was graded different. For a match zone scheme Emmamwori is an enigma. How fluid in coverage is he? I think Isiah Simmons hurt his evaluation. -

To each their own. That's a position where I would much rather have a premium talent at. Especially with the issues our Defense has had the last couple years. Look at the success the Steelers and Ravens had during the Ed Reed and Polamalu years. Meanwhile our biggest competition going into this season is going to be rolling out a Safety combo of Kyle Hamilton and Malaki Starks I would have LOVED for that to happen! He is going to be a stud. Just watch him and Kyle Hamilton ball out in Baltimore this year -

And reports were that they were keen on selecting Malaki Starks, so they were at least thinking about doing it again. -
Beane can't help himself. Every year he brings in a bunch of mediocre WR talent and that claims he upgraded the room.

They drafted one high last year! -

I thought that's why they drafted Cole Bishop, because hew as a cerebral guy. -
Not for nothing, but Beane looks a bit ridiculous for the Jeremy White thing if we’re out here lighting money on fire with Curtis Samuel & Elijah Moore with his 2.5M fully guaranteed. All is forgiven if Keon breaks out this year and Palmer is the guy Beane hypes him to be, but when McDermott says we have 3 WR’s then ((shrugs)) it’s not the greatest endorsement of how we’ve addressed a room he’s received criticism over year after year.

I don't care WHO does it. I want someone to step up and take the position...not have someone as the starter by default. Bishop, Hamlin, Lewis, heck even Hancock...I want someone to show they are the best. -

I'd love to see what Hancock next to Rapp looks like, but it's a lot to put on a rookie. -

I remember in the pre draft process Cole said he used to win most of the battles against Kincaid in practice at Utah. Kincaid concurred. That no doubt endeared Cole to the Bills and they even tried to trade up for him. It’d be a tragedy if the reality of it all was that neither one of these guys are more than an average NFL player, a JAG, given the high investments in both. -
Please dont do this to Palmer, Moore or Samuel.. He is who he is. For 100 targets no way. For 50 or less yes.

I agree. They'd be nuts if they don't do it. A patchwork secondary with Hamlin getting significant playing time is not the answer. -

HappyDays replied to HappyDays's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think it was a mistake to ever draft one high. These days, and especially in McDermott's scheme, the safety position is mostly about cerebral traits. All else being equal you'd prefer to have a high end athletic talent there of course, but that's not as important as the safety understanding their responsibilities and hitting their landmarks. That's where Hamlin despite his athletic limitations still beats out Bishop. Hyde and Poyer were 5th and 7th round picks respectively. Hyde had a 4.73 RAS score, Poyer had a 5.32. I don't know why this regime decided a top 64 pick with athletic traits but under-developed instincts and technique was the direction we needed to go. -
Don't clown yourself with stuff like this trying to write revisionist history.

I only have 44 guys with 5 probables who have “earned” roster spots or were highly drafted players Offense (21 + 2 probable) 2 QB - Allen, Trubisky 4 RB/FB - Cook, Davis, Johnson, Gilliam 3 TE - Knox, Kincaid, Hawes 4 WR - Palmer, Shakir, Coleman, Shavers - Shenault (WR/KR - Probable) - Samuel and Moore should be cut 4 IOL - McGovern, Edwards, Torrence & Anderson - SVPG if not put on IR/PUP 4 OT - Brown, Dawkins, Grable (if healthy), Lundt Defense (21 + 2 probable) 4 DE - Bosa, Rousseau, Epenesa, Jackson 4 DT - Jones, Oliver, Sanders, Walker - (Carter - probable) 3 LB - Milano, Bernard, Williams - Andreessen (probable because of ST) 5 CB - Benford, White, Hairston, T Johnson, Strong 4 S - Rapp, Bishop, Hamlin, Hancock 1 DB - Lewis Specialists (2 + 1 probable) - Ferguson (LS), Bass (PK - if healthy) & Robbins (P - probable but has been inconsistent) WR and the DBs are a mess because of injuries and bad play. At WR Moore and Samuel should be gone but Samuel’s contract may keep him here. At CB White looks old, Hairston is injured and Strong is a rookie. Dane Jackson and Ingram aren’t worth a roster spot much less PT. S is similar to CB. Forrest and Herndon haven’t earn a job, Rapp and Bishop aren’t exactly healthy, and Hancock is a rookie. Hamlin also isn’t good, but at least he is serviceable. LB has questions as well. The top 3 are solid+, but there is zero depth behind them unless Thompson can get healthy. Ulofoshio should be cut On the DL -Carter is likely making the team, but shouldn’t. He is good enough. Ogunjobi is worse and will likely be cut, suspension or no. Solomon has a chance, but there isn’t much there either. His chance is that the Bills keep him around until Hoecht returns. Along the OL - I think the only spot open is the 5th inside spot. That depends on SVPG health. I suspect he starts the year on the PUP list. Green could get the job as he is waiver exempt. The OT spots are set unless Grable’s concussion persists. Imho, Grable’s concussion is Van Denmark’s only road to a roster spot. This defense needs better depth Beane!

Just gotta trade Samuel to the Pats for Diggs and we'll have the whole 2021 team back.
