On a scale of 1-10 I would rate it a 7. Not horrible, but not a home run.

Hope like hell I'm wrong.

If you don't like the pick then the kid is gonna be outstanding!! :worthy:

From ESPN

Overall Football Traits

Production (2) A third-year sophomore who declared with two years of eligibility remaining. He redshirted in 2006 and played as a backup and on special teams in 2007, when he notched 12 total tackles, including four sacks. Had a breakout season in 2008, when he started all 13 games and recorded 49 tackles, including 19 TFL. He also led the Big Ten with 12 sacks.

Height-Weight-Speed (3) Adequate height for a DE. Has added bulk and appears capable of adding 10-15 more pounds to his frame. Likely to settle in as a rush-LB in the NFL. Is in great physical condition (just four-percent body fat) and displays excellent straight-line speed.

Durability (1) Played in all 25 games during his two seasons of eligibility at PSU. Appears to be a flexible, healthy and durable athlete.

Character (1) Very mature for his young age. Had to grow up in a hurry after mother died from birth complications when Aaron was six years old. He is a natural leader both vocally and by example. Non-stop motor is infectious. Great football character. Not aware of any off-the-field issues.

Defensive End specific Traits

Agility/Quickness (1) Exceptionally quick, even for his type of hybrid DE/OLB. Shows excellent agility and closing burst to the quarterback. Possesses top-shelf body control, as well

Strength/Toughness (3) He is lean and must add bulk to frame. Is light in the rear and shows marginal ability to stack at the line of scrimmage when teams run at him. However, don't mistake small for weak or soft in his case. He is aggressive and feisty. He displays good initial pop and adequate upper-body power. And he certainly does not back down from a one-on-one physical battle.

Instincts (2) A natural playmaker with a knack for jarring the ball loose. Very good snap anticipation and awareness as a pass rusher. Should only continue to improve in this area with more experience.

Pass Rusher (2) Quickest first step of all the edge rushers in the 2009 class. Fluid double moves. Bends the edge tightly. Shows quick hands and strong enough upper body to keep bigger blockers off his pads. Still developing his array of pass rush moves. Gets caught too frequently trying to spin out of double-team attention and needs work in that regard.

Run Stopper (3) Spent a lot of time last season working head-up on the TE as PSU's strong-side DE. Shows discipline with backside containment. Stays low and fights to keep his positioning. Can stack versus most TE's but gets washed out too easily by bigger OT's when they get into his pads.

Best pass rusher in the draft.

comes from a school with a bad history of D-lineman not producing in the NFL

was a one year wonder

undersized for DE in the NFL and at best is a situation pass rusher

clearly better suited for OLB then DE in the NFL

i hate this pick

Not a fan of the pick, but if he develops it could work out. I only saw him play once, can't say I was bowled over.

Per PFW:

Lined up at 226 pounds in the Rose Bowl and put on too much weight too quickly and speed was clearly affected at the combine when he timed in the 4.9 second on some clocks in the 40-yard dash and did not look as athletic as he did during the season. However, he is a major league pass rushing talent with natural ability that cannot be taught.

An unrefined talent (from PSU--my #1 problem with the pick) in the early stages of maturation with a very high ceiling. Maybin showed the most pure upfield burst of any pass rusher in this draft and possesses immense natural athletic ability to line up in either a 3-4 or 4-3 front. Might not provide instant returns, but if he learns to handle the extra weight (my #2 problem with the pick), picks up on the mental aspects of the game, and refines is pass rush ability, he could be a force.

If, if, if...I hate that phrase at #11.

We got the guy that can help fix pass rush. How is it a bad pick?

For one, he may not be an every down player at DE. That's not a problem though, considering that they're calling him a Lb, which he's never played before.

Sigh...

I really, really hope this isn't Gabe Northern 2.0.

It's all stuff that should be easily fixed. JMO

Every draftee, at any position, no matter where they are drafted is a giant "IF" and a "Maybe".

I know...but this team can't swing for the fences and suffer another miss. 'One year wonder' is a big red flag for me. Wasn't a fan of any of the DE's for that matter.

I'm concerned that he's a an undersized tweener type who'll not be able to hold up physically against NFL linemen.

Featured Prospects

Selected by: Buffalo Bills

Round: 1

Pick (Overall): 11 (11)

Pick Analysis: The Bills take the dynamic pass-rushing specialist from Penn State. Though Maybin left State College, Pa., as a one-year starter, he racked up 12 sacks in his final season and dazzled scouts with his exceptional first-step quickness. For a team in desperate need of a pass rush, Maybin appears to be the ideal fit.

Overview

Listed second on the depth chart behind Maurice Evans at left defensive end, Maybin was thrust into the starting lineup the third game of his junior season. Coaches were looking to spark a unit hit by graduation, suspensions and injuries and felt that the youngster would be given an audition to see if he could ignite the pass rush.

And spark the defense he did.

Maybin became the 93rd Penn State player to earn All-American first-team honors, the 76th athlete from the Joe Paterno era to receive that honor. The legendary coach has seen at least one of his players earn All-American accolades in 38 of his 43 seasons as head coach.

Maybin finished the 2008 season leading the Big Ten Conference and ranking seventh in the nation with 12 quarterback sacks. That total tied for fifth-best on the school single-season list. His 20 stops behind the line of scrimmage rank as the sixth-highest season total by a Nittany Lion. The left end also registered at least one tackle for loss in all 13 games in which he played.

Many Penn State fans thought they were seeing the rise of their team's next great defensive presence. But the 230-pounder felt that after just one season as a starter and two campaigns with the varsity, that he was ready to test his wares in the NFL.

Becoming a force to be reckoned with is not something new for Maybin. At Mount Hebron High School, he earned 2005 Baltimore Sun All-Metro team, second-team big school All-State and first-team All-Howard County accolades. As a junior, he produced 79 tackles with nine sacks, followed by ten sacks and 80 tackles in his final season.

During his first collegiate season, he redshirted, performing on the scout team at Penn State in 2006. He saw action in 13 games in '07 as a reserve defensive end. He managed only 12 tackles (eight solo), but four of them were quarterback sacks, as he also caused one fumble and deflected a third-down pass.

The 2008 season opened with Maybin playing with the second unit. He took over left end duties vs. Syracuse, going on to start ten of the team's next 11 contests. He had at least one tackle behind the line of scrimmage in every game in which he played. The All-Big Ten Conference choice and Ted Hendricks Award finalist also registered at least one sack in 10 games, caused three fumbles and ranked sixth on the team with 49 tackles.

High School

Attended Mount Hebron (Ellicott City, Md.) High School, playing football for head coach Larry Luthe...Earned 2005 Baltimore Sun All-Metro team, second-team big school All-State and first-team All-Howard County accolades...As a junior, he produced 79 tackles with nine sacks, followed by 10 sacks and 80 tackles in his final season...Participated in drama programs and did volunteer work.

I like this pick. Remember, this is considered one of the weakest drafts in history, so whoever we got at #11 wouldn't have jumped off the page. That said, we got a good passrushing prospect based on his numbers, measurables, and intangibles.

I've always said to focus the draft on the lines so no complaints here.

7-10 doesn't mean I don't like the pick and I too hope he's going to be outstanding.

Pass rusher was one of our biggest needs IMO. If he helps fix that the whole defense gets better.

Major needs now are O-line, LB & TE. If we come out of the day with 2 of those crossed off the list then we did OK (as OK as you can be without putting on pads).

Pro Day Results: Aaron Maybin, Penn State

Written by NFL Draft Bible

Friday, 20 March 2009 08:09

Aaron Maybin drastically increased his 40-yard dash time at Penn State’s pro day, clocking in at 4.59 and 4.63 seconds, down from his Scouting Combine effort that landed in the 4.7s. Defensive end Maurice Evans ran a 4.75, while cornerback Tony Davis ran an impressive 4.40. Maybin has bulked up some 25 pounds to 252 and has been working with Lancaster-based performance trainer Steve Saunders.

every report says he is teh fastest, most sudden, and has the most natural pass rush talent.\

they also say he is tough and durable.

if he rotates in with our 5 other ends and rushes the passer, this is a great thing.

i wonder if some of you even like football.

You're a !@#$ing idiot. Once he was up to 249 he ran like sh--.

You make some decent points sometimes but you really have to tone it down with the name calling. Come man, we are all in this together. BTW, I love Maybin as the pick. Best pure pass rusher in the draft.

If nothing else Jauron sticks with his crappy defensive scheme in the Tampa 2, and Maybin fits that scheme better then any other player as a DE. He does run the arc better then anyone else in the draft and has that elite speed. I just can't get over the fact they took Maybin over Orakpo and Robert Ayers.

My problem with this pick is the guy wasn't a good run stopper in college and will be even worse in the NFL, and will he need to develop for awhile, like 2-3 years. Tough to justify that #11 for a guy who only does one thing well, and that was in college against inferior players. Lets see how many sacks he gets in the NFL while battling 330 lb NFL tackles

Great, so we traded away a pro bowler for an extra pick in the weakest draft in history? Shrewd. :censored:
